  • The Chinese giant salamander (Andrias davidianus) is the largest amphibian in the world. It lives in Chinese creeks, lakes, and is considered to be a critically endangered species. Since May 2014, Chinese giant salamanders have been living in Prague Zoo. Male Carlo, probably the largest giant salamander in the world, is the most interesting salamander here. His length is about 160 cm and his weight exceeds 35 kg. Originally he was taken for one year by Prague Zoo from the State Museum of Natural History Karlsruhe, German (Staatliches Museum für Naturkunde, Karlsruhe). However, good care and beautiful atmosphere of the Giant Salamander House guaranteed him permanent residency here.
Follow us to inner rooms where Peter Velenský, reptile curator, will show and tell you how difficult it is to take care of giant salamanders. Welcome to Prague Zoo.
