    Wonderful presentation, as usual. I am a Keralite, living in TN. This extremist behaviour of Keralites will soon end, because we can't expect remittance for ever. Compare with TN which is more progressed than K..without any of the extreme behaviour of K.. and many more.

      So how will you live in Kerala?

    • @indianchristian1
      @indianchristian1 3 дня назад

      @truthprevails5173 The idea is that if you are not a member of one of the trade unions or not employed by a public or governmental enterprise then the appropriate path to success in Kerala is to send enough of your family members abroad so that they can send enough remittance to you for you to live comfortably in Kerala. Note that it doesn't have to be abroad, you can also send them to other states of India itself.
      And for the ones who are already abroad, like in the US, visiting India annually offers a way of vacationing and that is a source of income for the Kerala government.

    The high rate of migration and remittances also explains absence of slums/shantytowns in the state. Ppl built houses wherever they could with the money they minted abroad/other state. The working class could breathe easy knowing very well that they dont have to slog their arse off in a big city for survival.

    I’d add one more comment I thought would be apt:
    Per Kerala’s advocates, a movie where the theatre has broken down because it can’t carry the weight of the rush is a failure; a movie where the people start walking out 15 minutes in, is a blockbuster.

    It was said that remittances to Kerala would drop now that Keralites are migrating to USA, UK etc where they are being given permanent residency unlike Gulf.
    How is that the remittances are still rising ? Can you kindly clarify?
    Regards,
    Sumal S

    • @joe-metricview6035
      @joe-metricview6035  4 дня назад +2

      Pertinent question, Sumal. All indications are that remittance should fall, given that people are now migrating for good, even taking their parents along and selling assets in India.
      However, this is yet to happen though it cannot be ruled out. The Indian rupee's consistent decline has also led to a rise in remittance in rupee terms. Most surprising is how remittance swelled even during the Covid years.

      The dollar is strengthening significantly; and this reflects also in the strength of dollar-linked currencies such as GCC. In part, consumption demands are rising rapidly as people age (esp. medical needs). Also, the number of people leaving and earning has accelerated.
      All these things add up.

    Kerala is better than many other Indian states, but I have some suggestions to improve Kerala to get more tourists. Traffic laws need to be improved and also traffic lights because driving in Kerala is very risky. Easier rules for the foreigners to travel because I've read that tourists experience difficulties at the airports and other government offices. Many tourists places are dirty with waste. Better infrastructure. All the restaurants need to be certified for cleanness, service, better foods and clean washrooms with soap and paper towel to dry or hand dryer. All the Kerala roads sides are with political banners and notices. Many road sides are dirty. If we get more tourists means more jobs for young people. Overall, we need to have higher standards to bring more tourists.

    Good observation. At one time Switzerland had one of the highest GDPs by merely doing three things right - manufacturing top quality wrist watches, making delectable chocolates and attracting ill gotten wealth from the rest of the world to their banks !!! You really dont have to be a jack of all trades to succeed.
    While working in Mumbai in the eighties, our friends from other states used to pull our legs with this joke -

    It is idiotic to say the least to think that heavy industries are not flourishing in Kerala due to trade unions. Manufacturing industry and even service industries will for sure go to places where they will get cheap labour land and energy. Kerala is one of the highest population density regions in india. It is a stretch of land between sea and mountains which geographically unsustainable for heavy manufacturing Salary of manual labourers are highest in India.
    Trade unions started in USA a century back along with industrial growth. Trade unions will be more if industries flourish. It’s a world wide phenomenon. That is trade unions are not a product or an idea of communism but it is very much an idea ingrained within free market economy. So dear ammavan it is time for you to shut up . Get a life
