Evansville Storm Sirens & Lightning (May 4, 2012)

Frequent lightning repeatedly illuminates the sky over Evansville on the evening of May 4, 2012. A severe storm blew into the city from the northwest, producing golfball-sized hail and very heavy rain along with nearly-constant lightning.
This video was shot from the city's north side, looking west-northwest from about a mile south of the airport. The storm sirens at the start of the video are sounding for a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Vanderburgh County, Indiana.
Fellow siren geeks: The siren is a Sentry 15V1T.

@scooterbugs25: Evansville's siren policy is the same as in many other places. The sirens are sounded for a Tornado Warning or a Severe Thunderstorm Warning. If that results in them being sounded a lot, then that just means the weather around here is pretty nutty!

@brainslushy: Is there anything in the works to upgrade the Vanderburgh County siren system so that only the sirens within each warning polygon are sounded? I know it would come at a cost, but I'd think it would cut down on a lot of the "unnecessary" warnings that lead people to just ignore the sirens...

Evansville's policy is actually a little different than most. After the initial activation of a warning, we activate them 10 minutes later also.
Now that the NWS warns by polygons, sometimes this means there is just a warning for northern Vand. Co...so we sound them once and again 10 min after. Then 10 min later another warning for southern Vand. Co. So we do it all again.
I'm sometimes the guy that pushes the button...and yes, I think it's a little overkill too.
