    Day 10
    My pick for today is:
    Joe Louis Walker
    “New Direction”
Joe Louis Walker is an American blues musician known from his electric blues. His knowledge came from his use of older playing styles. If you define these characteristics with flexible feeling allusion of other guitarist like Robert Cray and Larry Garner are new breeds. There blues music blending ideas and devices of soul rock jazz and gospel beyond the reach of there forerunners. He came from a musical background. First picking up the guitar at a young age. He became good friends with Mike Bloomfield until Bloomfield death. He got himself a degree in music and English. He played with well known blues musicians. Walker relieved his third blues award in 1996. In 2013 Walker was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame.

Today’s favorite 2004 pick is LIONHEART by SAXON. I’ve noticed that many have picked this album already and for good reason. This is an excellent heavy metal outing for this band. Here’s the song breakdown.
“Witchfinder General”: In England there was a real life witch hunter by the name of Matthew Hopkins who flourished during the English Civil War. He was responsible for the hanging of 112 women who he claimed were witches between 1645 and 1647. Vincent Price portrayed him to great effect in the 1968 movie by the same name. Saxon gives this song the appropriate heavy metal head pounding rocker for the occasion. Grade A
“Man and Machine” Is a hard driving rocker with some nice guitar riffing. Biff Byford’s singing is dynamic. Grade A-
“The Return” is a haunting composition using synthesizers and an eerie sounding choir.
“Lionheart” If you’re not paying attention, then you won’t realize that this tune kicks in without a break and that you’re not hearing “The Return” any more. Lionheart is a well-paced anthemic rocker that almost has enough composition changes in it to qualify as prog…But not quite. Grade A
“Beyond the Grave” is a heavy metal song with a cool change of pace thrown in to keep you on your toes and your interest. Grade A
“Justice” is a great fast paced rocker that is in my “Goldilocks Zone” not too fast and not too slow…Not too hard and not too soft. Grade A
“To Live by the Sword” I’m labelling this number as thrash. It’s a very fast paced metal with machine gun fire drumming. Grade B
“Jack Tars” Is a nice acoustic guitar number and is a nice respite from the above composition. This is so short that I qualify it as a palate cleanser. No Grade.
“English Man-o-War” is a furious heavy metal rocker. Grade A-
“Searching for Atlantis” has a bit of a spooky opening in the beginning that launches this composition into the meat of another great heavy metal tune. There is some admirable guitar work to hear in this song. Grade A
“Flying on the Edge” is a hard pounding metal song with an effective chorus. This may be my favorite composition on this album. Grade A
In closing, out of the24 studio albums produced by Saxon, I would place this recording in the top 3 or 4.
Album cumulative grade total is A

    Hopes and Fears by Keane
Released in May 2004 by Island Records, Hopes and Fears is the debut studio album by the piano-driven British band Keane. The album rapidly garnered warm critical notices and titanic commercial success (it is certified platinum nine times over in England), establishing the band as a significant chart presence in the early 2000s. Characterized by sweet melodies and introspective lyrics, the album features such standout songs as "Somewhere Only We Know," "Everybody's Changing," and "Bedshaped” and showcases vocalist Tom Chaplin's tender vocals and Tim Rice-Oxley's intricate piano performances. This is tasteful and emotive adult pop music of the highest order, à la Midge Ure-era Ultravox.
Choice cuts: “Bend and Break,” “Bedshaped”
    Prior 2004 selections -
    Antics by Interpol
A Grand Don't Come for Free by the Streets

My choice today from 2004 is THE RAGING FIRE by SEVENTH KEY. This is a side project/band put together by Kansas bass player Billy Greer, reuniting him with his old Streets cohort, guitarist and multi instrumentalist Mike Slamer. This is the 2nd of 3 studio albums released under the Seventh Key name. The first had various members of Kansas guesting and felt a little disjointed if still a fine effort and a must hear for Kansas and AOR fans in general. However, this feels more of a band album and has a much greater focus. Billy as well as playing bass, provides lead vocals on all 10 tracks and at times sounds, to my ears, uncannily like Tommy Shaw. Indeed straight ahead rockers like, The Sun Will Rise, Sin City (not an AC/DC cover) and Run could almost be unheard Tommy Shaw Damn Yankees songs especially with Mike Slamer playing up a veritable storm, as he does throughout. Elsewhere, You Cross The Line has a quiet/loud feel like Juke Box Hero, a trick repeated on the title track which this time could be a long lost Tommy Shaw Styx song from the 70s. Always From The Heart is a great uptempo AOR track. Pyramid Princess as the title suggests has that Eastern feel and wouldn't sound out of place with Dio singing it for Rainbow or his own band. An Ocean Away is like U2 meets AOR, if you can imagine such a thing. It Should Have Been You is the set's big ballad and the album climaxes with the epic Winds of War, a huge prog tinged heavy rock track reflecting on the futility of war and how hatred is often passed down through generations. Whilst Seventh Key was purely conceived as a side project, this and all 3 plus the live album come highly recommended to melodic rock fans.

    10. Razorlight - Up All Night
Of all the early 00s UK garage punk bands that popped up in the wake of The Strokes, Razorlight is probably the least cool. Johnny Borrell has the kind of punchable face where you have to consciously unball your fists any time you see him in a video. It also doesn't help that after they lost their great drummer after their first album, the band sucked rotten eggs. However, I still love this debut. I love it so much I even tracked down all the B-sides to the singles, including a cover of "Hey Ya." While The Clash-worshipping Libertines were more popular, I preferred Razorlight's homage to early CBGBs sounds of the Patti Smith Group, the Heartbreakers and the Voidoids. And then there's "Golden Touch," their underrated crown jewel.
    11. Wilco - A Ghost Is Born
    12. Isis - Panopticon
    13. Interpol - Antics
    14. Electric Wizard - We Live
    15. Tom Waits - Real Gone

ACID MOTHERS AND GONG: Good to see this album featuring on SOT. Lyrically and musically the combined forces of Gong and Acid Mothers reminds of Gong’s brilliant Camembert Electrique. Makototen is outstanding and Supercotton bonkers but so Gong. Incidentally, 19 years later My Guitar is a Spaceship from their 2023 release is one of the best Gong tracks period.

Tiles-Window Dressing. I bought this cd from Tower Records when it first came out. They're a quartet from Detroit. I believe that their name is from the Led Zeppelin song Out On The Tiles. They remind me of Rush. They got Terry Brown to produce, and Hugh Syme to do the cover. Hugh even plays keyboards on a song Slippers In The Snow, which is a melodic tune. Matthew Parmenter from Discipline plays violin on a ballad called Tear-Water Tea and the instrumental Unicornicopia.

May makeup for days missed.. Obscure and Underrated Album.. 20. Brian Jones Ma**acre "Give It Back" (1997)
Modern Day Psychedelic Rock.. I really love this album.. Highlight songs are all in a row.. "Super-Sonic" .., "This Is Why You Love Me" (that is a fantastic little song that can't get out of head when you hear it.. Should've been on the radio but these bands weren't forced fed on the radio) .., "Satellite" ., And two songs that go together "Malela" and "Salaam".. But the album is Psychedelic Modern but in the classic sense.. This is most likely their most accessable album of their catalogue as they can get really weird at times.. If you love that sorta thing (Syd Barrett comes to mind) then recommend check out other albums by them.. Sure a lot of people here will get the satire of the band name (2 combined into 1).. Highly Recommended..

Started out on drums but picked up the guitar once he heard the stones also influenced by Hendrix And Cream. This being his 12th official cd this recording for Blind Pig was a little more social minded and political than previous cds but still brings the Popa Chubby blues swagger. Hey there everyone, day 6 it is, and my pick today sees me squarely back at the AOR end of the musical spectrum, and it's the 6th and penultimate studio album by a Norwegian band who enjoyed major success in their home country, and dabbled outside of it, have enjoyed a minor hit ir two in the US and elsewhere.
    STAGE DOLLS "Get A Life"
A three piece band fronted by band mainman Torstein Flakne on lead vocals and guitars, with Terje Storti on bass and Morten Skogstad on drums.
Simply put, this is basic (in a good way), summertime, driving with the top down pop rock, in the vein of Bryan Adams at his best, Def Leppard at their simplest or even, dare I say it, B*n J*vi minus the poodle perms. In a nutshell, fun, undemanding stuff, perfect for kicking back at the beach with a beer.
Songs, well, there are 11 of them, and the titles say it all really- Running Back To You, You're The One, Everybody Wanna R&R, 24/7, Summertime Ladies... nuff said really!
Their earlier albums are good too, in more or less the same vein, Commandos, Stage Dolls and Stripped are all well worth getting if you like this sort of thing!

Electric Frankenstein ... Dead and Back
Electric Frankenstein ... We Will Bury You!
Electric Frankenstein is a glorious of metal/hard rock/punk combined conceived in a garage. No bloody ballads to be found here.
They had two releases in 2004.
Dead and Back is a collection of their contributions to two split albums, one with the Supersuckers, the other with El Nada. Plus, an EP they had recently put out. All great stuff, be sure you are strapped in.
Their other 2004 album is a two-CD collection of cover songs they usually contributed to various tribute albums over the years. The list usually alternates between punk acts and heavy metal/hard rock/classic rock all in the Electric Frankenstein style. Among the bands covered are:
    AC/DC
    Circle Jerks
    Girlschool
    Dead Kennedys
    Fleetwood Mac
    Dead Boys
    Motorhead
    New York Dolls
    Iron Maiden
    DRI
    The Tubes
    The Clash
    Aerosmith
    Misfits
    And more...
If somehow you have not heard any of the numerous Electric Frankenstein albums, you are probably cheating yourself.

Today`s pick: Paatos - "Kallocain". Even though they`re a Scandinavian progressive rock band with ex members of Landberk, this album has more in common with British Trip-hop bands like Portishead and Massive Attack. The prog is still there though, with heavy use of mellotron, organ, and guitar, making for an interesting mix of styles that I think works well. Most of this is laid back with a big dose of melancholy and gloom in true Scandinavian prog fashion. Excellent vocals that bring to mind Beth Gibbons or even Julee Cruise. If you combined parts of White Willow, Anekdoten, Portishead, and Massive Attack, you might get something like this album.

So lotsa great choices for 2004. I'll stick with my approach to the FF picks & do mine alphabetically - two letters per day/year. There are SO many. Here are the picks for 2004/K-L:
Korenos/Asian Street Style - quality Japanese fusion
The Ladder/Future Miracles - very good AOR album, a Steve Overland project (FM, Groundbreaker, Lonerider, Shadowman, Wildlife)
Little Feat/Highwire Act Live In St. Louis In St. Louis 2003 (released in 2004). Their fifth live album, an 18(!) minute "Dixie Chicken" & 12 minute "Fat Man In The Bathtub". Great live version of "Time Loves A Hero". There's also Barnstormin' Live Vol. 1 & 2, much of it recorded this same year (but released in 2005). Vol 2 contains many LF 'standards' while Vol 1 focuses on the lesser-known tracks. There's also a box set available that combines both of these live sets
Living Loud - s/t & Live In Sydney 2004 - what a lineup! You've got Steve Morse, Lee Kerslake, Bob Daisley & Don Airey, plus Cold Chisel's Jimmy Barnes. Short-lived project, these two releases were it. Some Ozzy covers plus originals, the split is 50/50. Really interesting to hear Morse play those classic Randy Rhoads riffs
    HM's: Karmakanic, Karnataka, Kozo Suganuma

Maybe if it wasn’t for folks like me describing their taste as a tiny bit nerdly, this would go away lol! Oh well let’s just say we all share eclectic taste which has so much enriched our lives year after year! In terms of you mentioning diversity vs adversity in your rap the other month, I would say diversity is key to everything in music we resonate with - so many cultural influences to varying degrees inform my taste, yet I am far from DEI in terms of political approach lol!

    #10 Sum 41 - Chuck
Chuck is Sum 41's third full-length album, and shows the band at their darkest and heaviest. This album almost completely breaks off from their traditional Pop Punk Green Day-inspired sound in favor of a heavier Metal sound.
The album begins with the track simply titled "Intro", with these dark guitar strums that slowly build upon themselves before totally letting loose on the transition into the incredible "No Reason". This track shows the band still going for their traditional Punk sound, but hitting it just a little heavier. This is one of the highlights of the album before going into the very chaotic and intense banger "We're All To Blame", which is the first moment on the record that goes for a more Heavy Metal sound. The track jumps from those chaotic and nasty riffs and slowly transitions to a slower, more melodic sound.
"Angels With Dirty Faces" is a dark track that lyrically deals with addiction, which was something lead singer Deryck Whibley was struggling with at the time. Instrumentally it's another banger with Thrash Metal drums and riffs. Another highlight of the album is "I'm Not The One", which is an all-out slammer. The slow build-up in the intro on the hi-hat before adding in the ride cymbal, and then the guitars slowly coming in until the track just completely explodes is just such an incredible moment on the record. The ballad "Pieces" is easily a classic. The very dark and mellow guitar tones, the very subtle but Grand synths in the beginning of the song, and Deryck's very vulnerable and broken vocals perfectly complete the track.
Overall, Chuck is easily one of the heaviest and darkest albums in Sum 41's discography. With many political contents in the lyrics, this record shows Sum 41 with a well-developed sound, while still displaying their Punk angst. This is their masterpiece.
    Favorite Tracks:
    "No Reason"
    "We're All To Blame"
    "Angels With Dirty Faces"
    "I'm Not The One"
    "Pieces"
