    GameExplain mentioned on their video this Sonic is still very much a kid, instead of a teenaged Sonic most games refer to. Even with it being a kind of AU where Sonic hadn't met Eggman yet, hadn't learned his favorite food was chili dogs yet, and EVEN hadn't really been shown to know Tails/Knuckles/Shadow/etc on screen, it still posits that this Sonic spent about a decade dimension hopping with no contact to real people, let alone a parental figure. His youth, combined with a lack of anyone to reign him in, means he can't have a filter on his thoughts, had no one to really teach him to control his impulses or powers, and definitely didn't have anyone to really tell him no, let alone stop him.
    This is a Sonic that hinges his 11th hour in this movie on the fact he DID make a friend for once in his life since leaving Mobius (which makes me curious how this Sonic will interact with Tails)
    This movie, when taken as an AU origin story while still remaining extremely respectful to the source material, can safely ignore the point of how game!Sonic approaches problem solving and emotions. This is a Sonic still growing up, and thus a Sonic that can deviate a small amount for cinematic purposes. In some senses, one could place this movie, based on the implied age of Sonic, before the first Sonic game. Whether or not it allows the rest of the games to occur depends on him returning home, or otherwise at least gaining the ability to do so. Perhaps in a sequel.

    I see this movie as a young/growing Sonic honestly. The Sonic you describe, the one we see in games, I don't think the film's Sonic is meant to be there. His more childish/vulnerable demeanor, is because of his circumstance, like you said, and because he's still young. I believe IF this becomes a franchise and gets sequels, his character arc will continue and he will become the hero we all grew up with.

    As a Sonic fan since 93, I literally grew up with him and I've loved him for my whole life. Through all the good and bad times.
    I had a blast with this movie. The Sega logo made me tear up, then hearing Hyper Potions got me, the end credits scene I just started crying. My girlfriend asked me what was wrong and I was just like. I feel like a kid. Sonic is one of my first memories and seeing him like this was just so much to handle. The movies not perfect, but I loved it anyways. You grow up and man sometimes life just really kicks the shit out of you. Then something comes along and just makes you remember what it was like being a kid, not worrying about things, and having a good time. This movie did that for me. I hope we get a sequel. The movie deserves one.

  • @audoodle9963
    @audoodle9963 4 года назад +55

    I think Schwartz’s sonic clicked with me. He isn’t perfectly confident like game Sonic but he really wants to be that. I think for a what can best be put as a young sonic he does the part well. I think this being the character who becomes more of a grownup way past cool speedy boy makes a lot of sense. (Even if sometimes he sounded a bit too much like another VA role I know him for)
    Also yeah I think a sequel could make a lot more of this work and I think they know the demand is for more of the sonic characters in world. Putting Sonic back in what I assume is Mobius? And having him feel like a stranger in his home land could be a very good set up especially for a kids film.
    The worry is how much does a cast of all CGi characters (with a Carry and a Marsden yes) in an all CGi world like that cost a studio. Probably a lot. So it would probably still be half on Earth which I would happily accept. Earth is this Sonic’s home and it would be a mistake to try and erase the arc he had in this movie by trying to shove him back into living on Mobius just to be more game accurate.
    All that said the fact that I a long lapsed sonic fan who more so enjoys watching the games and fandom from afar now a days really wants a sequel to this movie and is theorizing about it is telling in and of itself tbh.

    • @saricubra2867
      @saricubra2867 4 года назад

      "Mobius"
      Technically, *Mobius is also a twisted version of the Earth* and the name itself doesn't exist if you take the *games* , not material outside of the games. Using some real world settings really isn't out of place.
      I think that they should change many designs if they want to be more faithful to the games.
      The original movie design shows why the super realistic setting can bring an uncanny effect (like Sonic 06 did lol).
      Fun fact, there was a two-episode Sonic animated movie from 1996 only released in Japan, there are also similarities with the Earth.
      I think that this movie is technically the best videogame adaptation ever made for now (but this doesn't mean that the movie itself is a masterpiece), it's also ahead of detective Pikachu in the box office.

      Star masterc bigger opening doesn’t mean bigger overall. It’s yet to be seen how long lasting the sonic movie is. Good chance it does beat pikachu but who knows.

    I agree that the overall story was pretty generic... however, I do feel that they got the unavoidable love interest right at the very least. They didn't develop a relationship that felt forced throughout the movie, nor did it "fix" a problematic relationship/divorce like in most Hollywood cashgrabs. Nope, she was there, their relationship was pre-established and heartwarming, she contributed to the plot and she even had a few funny lines and moments herself. I may be exagerating about something that's overall such a tiny part of the movie, but I appreciate the fact that a love interest wasn't a source of tacked-on cringe for once. Take notes, movie directors! An action movie can feature an healthy relationship and still be considered good!

  • @hypershadic1151

    After watching the movie, my absolute favorite part in the show was the Tails cameo. For me, that set up SO MANY THINGS! For starters, the insane inventions that Tails creates for Sonic to use. Second, a way for Sonic to reconnect with Mobius and POTENTIALLY THE CHAOS EMERALDS, more interaction with the echidna tribe we saw at the beginning of the movie, and maybe an introduction to knuckles. But most importantly, it set up a more serious tone, something not seen in Sonic in probably over 10 years. I like light-hearted fun as much as the next guy, but when all Sonic's about anymore is jokes and giggles, it gets a bit old.
    Also, I took his emotional vulnerability with a grain of salt. Mostly because he's so young in this, the youngest adaption animation of Sonic to talk most likely. Also, they covered it, they got past it, and even though it was hard for me to accept at first, when I started thinking about it, that really just fit Sonic's character. He's always surrounded himself by friends, and the reason he fights is to protect his friends. I guess without them, he really doesn't have a need to fight, just run away. I mean straight from Sonic 1, he was just saving little animals... So who knows, maybe he developed his love for fighting later in the series of video games, and I guess I can look past that.

    • @abbacuspotter9232
      @abbacuspotter9232 4 года назад +1

      Thats the exact thing i had been thinking when i just watched this movie.
      something i dont see a lot of comments about is that this is an origin story and it sets up the events of how dr robotnik actually got to mobius in the first place.
      Some people might complain or say it makes no sense that sonic is in the human world, or be upset that there isnt much of sonics homeworld and classic story, but without this direction having eggman in Mobius would be pushed down to a minor, and less interesting, flashback sequence.
      I honestly believe they are setting the stage for a trilogy.
      movie one, starts in mobius, then is set on earth. Robotnik is sent to some mushroom land, with few supplies, perhaps where he gains the need to use creatures as power sources.
      movie 2 will be set in mobius, as obviously tails has a need to find sonic, likely some danger at home. chaos emeralds will be introduced, and knuckles makes an appearance, maybe chaos is the big bad (ties in the echidna tribe from movie 1) at the end of the movie eggman has ended up in mobius and gets his hands on a chaos emerald and begins building his base and robot armies.
      movie 3 will be set in both worlds, eggman builds a machine that somehow merges the two worlds, theatening both, and that quill he has at the end of the movie, not his way to get back to earth, but using the quill and the power of the chaos emerald(s) he has he manages to clone sonic as a way to take sonic down. this clone is shadow.
      or scenario 2 (more likely) uses the quill to make metal sonic

    Loved Jim Carrey as Eggman and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic, I hope they reprise their roles in the sequels. I also loved Sonic's adorable and charming animation. I appreciate that the story at least wasn't terrible, it was a simple and wholesome buddy-cop-esque movie... But the story will still be forgotten. So, all I hope is that for future movies the plot is less bland cookie-cutout - and more original, more meaningful, and truer to source material.

Not to be a downer, but every moment he was on-screen was my least favorite moment in the movie lol. Granted, the writing and the script steer the performance, so that’s probably more at fault than Carrey himself.
      His scene with the military officer could’ve been cut entirely and probably the role of the government on the whole. Would’ve been much better to just have him as a villainous rogue agent acting on his own accord without government-backing.

    As a fellow Sonic fan since 1991, I agree with pretty much everything you said. It could definitely have used more Sonic-cy moments, but at the same time, we grew up with AoStH, SatAM, Underground, the comics...so many different continuities and variations of the character and world, and we loved 'em all in their own ways. Just like with them, I loved the Sonic movie as a brand new version of the character and world, and I'm super excited to see what sort of things they have in store for the future of the movie franchise--because with the amount of money this movie is raking in, I bet a sequel will be confirmed pretty soon.

    I have Perspective #1 for the most part. I had trouble enjoying the film itself because the plot didn't really make much sense either despite being so simple. I'm much more interested in the possible sequel now that this movie is out of the way, but it's not one I'd watch again for fun.

    I imagine they wanted to set its own version of the sonic continuity that the audience could become familiar with. The film certainly makes sense in that context.

    I did enjoy the movie. The humor was great, and the plot was... decent enough. Jim Carey was amazing. My only main problem was, just as you said, Sonic didn't feel like Sonic. He felt too insecure, too emotional. The character who once said "If you have time to worry, then just run" seems... well, he's still flippant and carefree, WHEN he's flippant and carefree. But he isn't like that all the time, half the time he seems more depressed and reserved and nervous, which was definitely NEVER a trait Sonic has held.
    Besides from Sonic himself, the rest of the movie was amazing. Especially the references. My absolute FAVORITE one was in the beginning, that the reason that Sonic was forced from his home, because of the power he had, was because of the freaking Echidna Tribe, a tribe KNOWN for power abuse as we would see in Sonic Adventure when they tried to snatch the power of the Emeralds, ultimately leading to their destruction. God that brought such a smile to my face.

    Me and my buddy watched both this and the sequel on opening night. Now, the sequel will be the better experience because of the kids in the audience. I'm an individual who's at worst indifferent over Shadow's character, but hearing the kids in the audience absolutely freaking LOSE IT over his reveal was probably one of the best theater-going experiences ive had alongside the final battle in Endgame.

    Pretty much my exact thoughts on this movie (saw it last night) I do hope that in the sequel, if they do make one, that they go more into the source material and adapt some actual Sonic lore. I've also been loving SRB2 since I started playing a week ago, and I'd love to hear your thoughts on it.

  • @Scroteydada

    It was very diluted with non-Sonic things. I enjoyed it mostly, but for those who care:
    They make Sonic an alien when the first games are set on real world islands around New Zealand. There's lots of dispute and contradictions of what's ''canon'' for Sonic locations, but the whole ''if it's not America it might as well be an alien planet'' message is implicitly there, even if unintentional.
    He's very clingy and stalkerish. Not the free spirited curious adventurer I know. The cop should contrast him, not be more ambitious than him before he's even met the devil. Sonic is more Amy than Sonic here. Were the writers colourblind? Hmm benefit of the doubt on this one but they better figure it out by the sequel.
    The American Paddington.

    Yeah, I am only a passive Sonic fan, but I thought this movie did its job of building its characters, teasing up the mystical setting and most of all, getting people interested in it. The next film should be what hardcore fans are waiting for, but starting directly with THAT part would have alienated everyone else.

    I really enjoyed this movie even though I'm 30. I wasn't expecting a great story, but it was entertaining and pretty funny to me. I don't mind not having lore, it would have been cool to see more of the world he came from, though. The kids that were in the theater with me were born 15, 20... if not more years after the Genesis days. Damn lol.

    The Sonic movie seemed like the writers had a bunch of really good ideas for scenes but couldn't figure out how to string them together to maintain a good pace for the movie. You had the cringeworthy bonding at the bar followed by Sonic's 'Quicksilver- esque' bar fight. You had the excellent car chase, followed by the tedious visit to the sister-in-laws house to bring in Tom's wife to the story for absolutely no reason other than to use smelling salts from her medkit. It was a movie that was great at its best and horrible at its worst creating a generally fun movie but not something I'd recommend to others. Hopefully though we'll see more polish and budget put into the sequel.

    I don't wanna be that guy, but I really don't get your critique of Sonic as being "emotionally vulnerable." Since Colors, excluding his fantastic characterization in IDW, Sonic has been written with all the personality of Mickey Mouse. A nothing character. And sure that's fine for games, especially ones as light on story as Colors and Generations, but the thing about a film is that story and characters come first. Sonic being written like he currently is in the games would have made him bland and boring. Thunder Sonic being linked to Sonic's emotions is a really cool concept that we wouldn't have gotten if he stayed as lame as he is in the Pontac and Graff written games, and we could even see it start to effect his real personality like Steven Universe Future's Pink Steven, or DBZ's Super Saiyan forms.
    Also I'm still trying to figure out if Sonic's adorable race car bed being red is a Sonic Drift reference or just a coincidence.

    Man, I envy your ability to enjoy Robo Blast 2. I've tried it several times, but the controls never felt right to me, and something about the camera made me literally sick after playing it (as in, got a headache WHILE PLAYING THE GAME). Sucks, because I appreciate the open-ended level design (even if I think it's a bit easy to get lost).

    So. Sonic's voice actor for the movie is Remastered Dewey Duck, who worries a lot about his charisma. Sonic honestly couldn't care less about what people think (literally, in the game where he is accused of crimes his thoughts concerning the cops chasing him is "I gotta get outta here."), and was only concerned with doing the right thing. And his insecurities have NEVER consisted of "I'm lonely. I want friends.". In his first 2 games, he is virtually alone the entire time. I do wish that Sonic was hesitant to join Donut Lord, more desirous to take matters into his own hands. It was fun, just not very Sonic.

    Your first perspective is pretty similar to my thoughts. Pretty good for what it is, but honestly doesn't have much to do with the source material. 3:04 While I don't think they ever give him an exact age in the movie, I honestly found his character as written and even Ben's performance to be a better fit for a 12 or so year old Sonic, rather than the 15 year old he is in the games.

      In the mobile games Sonic Dash and Sonic Forces, they labeled him "Teen Sonic" (also "Baby Sonic" for the one we saw with long claw), so I think he's clearly supposed to be younger than the sonic we're familiar with from the games. Exactly how old? Your guess is as good as mine. :)

    I'm surprised more people aren't talking more about Jim Carrey playing Eggman. From the moment I heard/saw it, I thought that that was an unusual choice. I mean, he doesn't even look like Eggman. He's called Eggman since he's so rotund and round, yet he's being played by a thin guy. Also yet, he does make it work. It's also unusual to take this approach of Eggman/Robotnik being a super smart guy (which he is) who is also super arrogant and on a hair trigger to put down other people, which does play well into why he loves robots. I enjoy the adaptation though. It's funny. I've been, many times, the smart one surrounded by morons more times than I would like, so his scenes where he's putting people down and reminding them why he's the only one who can stand a chance against Sonic are great. His lines are delivered hilariously and they are weirdly relatable due to the aforementioned reasons, though I'm _pretty_ sure I'm not a villain. Speaking of him as a villain...to a certain degree, he's just doing his job. Yes, him not being concerned with "collateral damage" and being a jerk to some people are pretty evil traits, but he is doing the job he was assigned to do. That's another difference. Eggman is pretty evil to a degree. He wants to kill Sonic and take over the world a lot of the time. Has anyone else been thinking or talking about Eggman in the movie? Or is everyone focused on Sonic (for obvious reasons)?
