We have a SW1 still in service. I work for Amtrak our yard switcher 737 still running strong. It’s currently in service in D.C. Used to be our switcher in Wilmington, DE
Awesome! Hard to believe that features like the B&M high number boards with marker lights were maintained and not cut off sometime in its lifetime. When you see the single stack and front sandbox, you instantly know it's first-gen. Kudos to the shop magicians keeping it going. Thanks for posting and Happy New Year!
Great to see a veteran locomotive in commercial service doing a great job also that it’s in good condition. An interesting video which I enjoyed watching.👍😁😁😁😁🚂🇬🇧🇬🇧
I worked on the one in Tipton Indiana. I did a complete rewire of the low voltage systems back to the original schematic. It is a fun little locomotive and the folks at the elevator are awesome. It was built in late summer of nineteen forty one for Con Edison in Chicago and worked the Lasall street power station which was later a nuclear unit. This little locomotive is known as the Atom Powered SW1. In case you are wondering, it says so across its nose and has the Atomic symbol on the cab sides. It also has the Con Edison clerestory roofed cab. I feel very privileged to have prolonged her useful life. She should live to see 100 revenue years.
I live in the general area. I enjoy catching that particular locomotive in action. The way the V6 prime mover chugs along and the 3 chime horn is awesome.
in my opinion, one of your best videos..............could have been 4 times longer.........never get tired of end of the line swithching..........thanks...........
EMD stopped making parts for locomotives like these thinking they could force people to buy new switchers. That little engine outlasted the company that built it and tried to kill it. As long as something is maintained properly there's no reason why it should not last forever.
The two oldest SW-1s in service are right down the street from my house. The unit that originally belonged to B&O is the first locomotive I ever set foot on.
Steelton and Highspire R.R. Had End cab switchers. 2 sat on a spur track for about at least 5 years. I retired from The Steelton Plant rail mill. From what i heard now there is only one left. Heard through the grapevine they scrapped them all but.If i remember correctly they were built in the early 1950s. Well I was just lucky to find a RUclips video of the engine they use is a EMD SW 1200. Attractive engine painted red white and blue
This is a great video! I grew up in Nanticoke and I remember the maze of railroads in the Wyoming and Lackawanna Valleys. I also remember the Knox Mine disaster that ended deep mining in the area.
The street mill that used to be called sharpn steel in my town, has 1 or 2 old switchers andvi don't know the maker of them, butt the mill is called n.l.m.k now the Russian s own it and they are blue with a yellow strip now, they have to be old units
Good question... Journal boxes still in tact... could be a clever disguise for sake of maintaining a historical appearance, though. It's not like she leaves the interchange... it's possible she still holds the plain bearings.
Beautiful video but I have to say as someone who worked in a rail yard he would be suspended if he pulled a stunt like that at 8min in the video he goes between the cars to readjust the couplings but the cars are not 50 ft apart and no 3 point protection. Please do better!!
@Trains21 I believe you but you must have a rail authority, and I would put money down that they wouldn't like that. Great video though I used the same end cab in the past
Very awesome intro music AC I've liked the music video that you put out the other day too that was pretty cool is this an sw600 or an SW 1000 you don't see switchers like that very much anymore cool video AC
There are Not too many employees or equipment that can say they’re still getting the job done 70+ years later. Thanks AC. 👍
Indeed, indeed!

I like the fact that it doesn’t even have a ditch lights. It looks very well-maintained beautiful piece of equipment.
I've been working on SW1s for over 20 years. Great locomotives. Still have 5 of them I work on.
super cool - thanks for the vid. That old SW-1 looks so tiny next to those modern tank cars! Great to see they are keeping it in good shape.

Totally agree!
This locomotive will be preserved In Danbury Connecticut, and will be returned to its as built identity as Boston & Maine #1127
That's the first time I've ever seen a train go in between 2 power poles. 😁👍

i wish they'd bring the end cabs back! that section you said used to be double tracked doesn't look wide enough to double!

Very cool!
It’s an 8 cylinder engine
Impressive to see trucks that still have the old journal boxes still on them. So may SW's have been converted. Reminds me of the old LVRR 112
Noticed this right away in the thumb, only see them on old display pieces up here now and the odd plow that didn't get new roller bearing trucks.
End cab switchers are my favorite diesels, and the SW-1 is my favorite end cab switcher. Thanks so much for sharing! Cheers from Wisconsin.
Thanks for watching Andrew. You're welcome from Northeastern Pennsylvania.
in my opinion, one of your best videos..............could have been 4 times longer.........never get tired of end of the line swithching..........thanks...........
Make sure that you tune in tomorrow. It will be 4x longer!
Excellent video AC. I operated a SW900. Good memories.
Awesome! Thanks for watching Hans.

08:30 - That's water coming out of the steam coils on the tank car, not leaking product. Amazing how sharp that curve is at the brewery.
That's what I figured. Water from cleaning the car. But it carried syrup in.
Dude didn’t check that the couplers were open before ramming it !😡
Some railroads will write you up over that !
The conductor should have been flagging that unprotected crossing !
Who's brewery is that??
The two oldest SW-1s in service are right down the street from my house. The unit that originally belonged to B&O is the first locomotive I ever set foot on.
Nice! Thanks for the memories!
That's a tight curve at 7:10
Yes it is.

Nice still going strong good job
Thanks Nancy.

Thanks Frank!
I’ve never seen a turn that sharp at 6:55! Awesome video. Thanks for sharing 👍🏻
Thanks for watching Brandon.
@@Trains21 you’re welcome. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome little vid with an awesome little switcher SW1 ... Thx for sharing ...
Thanks for watching!
Wow that one curve is so sharp it's insane it looks like a railroads online Narrow Gauge curve it's so sharp
@trains21 awesome video of the switcher engine keep up the good work and I enjoyed watching your videos even if my arms are hurting me too much
Thanks Sean. I will do.
Awesome video AC. Happy New Year to you and your family. It's been way too long since I last costed. Saving this for Danny he will love it also.
Hugs
Thanks Sarah. Cheer and holiday greetings to you and Mr. Holt both.
@@Trains21 Thank you A C.
Thanks for sharing this grand old locomotive 👍
You bet
That 567 is seems to be going really strong even after 80yrs and that too without overhauling it with 645 parts which other rr,'s did
I am still on the job at 60! Probably not as fast as 20, but still.......
Just keep on truckin'!
@@Trains21 Hammer Down!!
Amazing AC
Is this operation part of RJ Corman now? Great video by the way!
Thanx.. Yes, it is the RJ Corman now.
I miss your narration AC I wish you would start squawking and talking to me on your videos you are a good narrator
We've got one of those bad boys running around here at Washington Terminal/Union Station.
Awesome. Thanks for sharing!
A-1 sound track!
Gotta love that surround!
I live near the other RJC in cfd. i need to railfan L&S part of the system now.
Great video and great to see a piece of history that's still going and is that a ex Southern Pacific SW1 ?
Boston & Maine. Thanks for watching Thomas.
@@Trains21 Thank you and your welcome
You may find a "Notch 8 please" sign may be helpful. On the other hand, I would hate to see that beautiful switcher throw a rod! Maybe notch 5 1/2.

Would that be an 8-567? That ramp on the right there at1:30looks like it was constructed from leftover coal
Yes, it's is a 567 prime mover.
Are those still friction bearings in theSW-1 or just covers left in place after roller bearing conversion?
That's a good question. Maybe one of the viewers can answer it for you.
Does the 600 have roller bearings?
Good question... Journal boxes still in tact... could be a clever disguise for sake of maintaining a historical appearance, though. It's not like she leaves the interchange... it's possible she still holds the plain bearings.
With today's technology a few tweaks here and there and she'll be putting out 1200 HP easy! ( LOL )
Beautiful video but I have to say as someone who worked in a rail yard he would be suspended if he pulled a stunt like that at 8min in the video he goes between the cars to readjust the couplings but the cars are not 50 ft apart and no 3 point protection. Please do better!!
All I can say is that rules vary from railroad to railroad. Especially shortline to Class 1.
@Trains21 I believe you but you must have a rail authority, and I would put money down that they wouldn't like that. Great video though I used the same end cab in the past

SW-1
Why aren't there gates at the crossing at 5:23? Seems like an accident waiting to happen
Because it's stop and protect.
How cool that! Trains20 is the channel name today😁🚂🇨🇦🇺🇲🚃🚃🙋
