when mine came to me it had some very stuck valves which prevented it from starting, having sat 30 years in a shed. 3 bent pushrods and a bent valve had to be fixed before it would run. These 214 bedfords are bad for stuck valves. Mine is a 1951 M type, similar to this video but longer bonnet. It now has an Isuzu 4bd1t in it.

Great to the old girl running
Do you check it turns by hand or oil level? More than likely corroded wires. My J6 was exactly the same.
A lot of carbon? Needs a blacksmith's file rather than a henry board...but I do love the Bedford -is it a K type?

Is it a MLZ?
I believe it is, I'd have to double check with my mate who owns the truck.
