    Clare! You did it! 🎊👏🏻 you grew a melon! It looks sooooo delicious and there are more to come! Everything is looking wonderful and the harvests just keep coming! Thanks so much for the shout out 😊 very much looking forward to meeting you and so many other lovely RUclipsrs at the Malvern show! My first time there! It will be like Christmas! I have never tried cutting back nasturtiums but it does make perfect sense - going to watch with interest to see how yours go, so that I know for next year 💚
    Hope your daughter is continuing well on her road to recovery. Sending all the good wishes her way 🍀

      Thank you so much! I’m still blown away that I grew a melon .. and honestly Sarah it’s the tastiest melon I’ve ever eaten! I’m just stunned. I didn’t think it was possible, except maybe in the warmer areas further south
      I am looking forward to Malvern. Feels so appropriate to be meeting you on a Sunday too! Looking forward to the shopping ❤️❤️
      I hope the nasturtiums pick back up. Forecast for next week looks promising 🙏🏻

    Hi Clare,
    I love the Amaranthus...have never grown them myself, but their colour is stunning!
    I have grown scarlet emperor for years, then tried Scarlet Empire for the first time last year, and again this year. They are an improved version and didn't disapoint! I have manage to get Annual leave for the 29th September, so will be aiming to book my ticket for Malvern, today. It will be fab to finally meet you and others for a proper catch up!!!
    What a fabulous melon. I said last year I would give them a go in 2024 and then forgot to sow any seed!!! 🤦‍♀️

    It's such a joy to see and hear your joy and excitement! Those melons look lovely. I'm tempted to try some next year in my new greenhouse. Did you mention which kind yours are?
    I TOTALLY get the "last year all this wasn't here" thing. I have the same. And I'm continually blown away by my huge daily harvests right now. Despite some things not doing as well as we'd like, Nature seems to balance it out by other things doing much better. ❤🌱

    • @TheFarmyardGarden
      @TheFarmyardGarden  3 месяца назад

      Hi Kirsty, it’s an Arava melon that I harvested. One was sown silly early, (middle of Feb) one sown end of March. It’s the later sown one that’s ripened first.
      They aren’t overly big plants either, would have been fine in the smaller height of my greenhouse.
      I’m so pleased someone else gets the “last year all this wasn’t here”, as I feel like a broken record at times.. but it really is mind blowing isn’t it? Nature is wonderful at times.
      What’s your biggest success this year? I’ve a feeling my luffas are going to steal the show soon ❤️

    • @kirstypollock6811
      @kirstypollock6811 3 месяца назад +1

      @@TheFarmyardGarden looking forward to your luffas!
      Thanks for the melon info!
      My biggest success is probably courgettes and pumpkins. For the courgettes, I grew Green Machine and Terminator (edge just goes to green machine, but both amazing), an Italian striped ribbed whose name I can never recall (I call them "Big Luigi" 😂), Orelia long yellow ones, Midas round yellow and 8-ball round green. All have been great. It's been much wetter than usual here, I guess that helps. The pumpkins are mainly my own "house breed" that I think a were originally a cross between a spaghetti squash and a Sweet Jack 2 years ago. One plant has 6 big ones, without taking over the garden, it's compact more like a courgette plant. I'll be carefully saving the seed of those, but it's going to be unpredictable, because I also grew 3 Crown Prince, 3 Uichi Kuri (one small fruit per plant :-( ) and 2 Austrian "Oil pumpkin" with the green seeds for eating. I'm going to end up with over 30 pumpkins!! 🎃
      My onions get an honourable mention - they were great, huge, but so early that about half won't keep well - I had to harvest early due to them starting to have mould while still in the ground even if less than half had fallen over. There was no dry weather to cure them right, the air was too humid.

      Exactly that texture, Clare! Not nice at all are they? I didn’t buy any alpine strawberries though, so I’m most confused.
      I might save some seeds from my black beauty tomatoes. They’re lovely inside. Not sure how true to type they’ll be but I believe cross pollination is uncommon with tomatoes anyway.
      Could do a seed share? ❤️❤️

      @@TheFarmyardGarden ohh that would be nice, be interesting to see how they turn out, you had so many varieties, what if they were cross pollinated? It’s like a lucky dip. Hopefully they wouldn’t come out like the foamy sweets 😆

    Love the fruit cage. Wish I would have done that. So much easier to walk into.
    I have those small strawberries too. Terry King says they are Alpine. Actually they have nice flavor, but you have to pick them quick and process. However, they keep producing.
    You are going to have an abundance of nasties next year! I bet you have another flourish of blooms/leaves as they grow fast. Might give them a liquid feed too. I find they wax and wane throughout the season. Right now I have 1 really good looking and the rest are in a down cycle.

      Thanks Robin. I was wondering if the nasturtiums disliked my seaweed feed, as them dying back coincided with feeding them. 😅😅
      I didn’t much like the texture of my strawberries. They seemed really odd compared to normal types.
      I’m so sorry the melons have been hit with the cucumber vine beetles too. How disappointing for you. What a challenging season 😭🤗

    • @RobinGardens
      @RobinGardens 3 месяца назад

      @@TheFarmyardGarden I sent you a pic of my nasties that were trimmed 3 weeks ago. They are making a come back.
      I use a balanced liquid feed on my nasties and not too often. They are not really hungry plants.
      I've heard the old saying 'be nasty to nasties" but I find they need a bit more than that to thrive, at least in my soil. One thing is for certain, the volunteers work out best every season. So it's good that you're leaving some seed around the areas you want them.

    Congrats Clare on your harvests, well done you! My Pink Lemonade has never been prolific compared to my other varieties, not sure if it’s me or them?😂. Hoping for an update on the sourdough 🤪. I grew Melon in the greenhouse earlier and after successfully growing well, the leaves then turned yellow and the fruit dropped off🫣. Again, not sure if it’s me, or something to do with the dreadful and challenging season? I can’t believe it’s the last week of summer🫣

    • @TheFarmyardGarden
      @TheFarmyardGarden  3 месяца назад +1

      Hey Kaz, do you have more than one pink lemonade? I have two and was told I needed so to help with pollination. Apparently whilst self fertile, they still produce better if cross pollinated. I’ll have to see how they behave next year. One didn’t flower at all, the other had just five flowers. 😂
      My blue one doesn’t have a variety name on the ticket. Just says blueberry. Very helpful.
      A lot of my melons didn’t even open the flowers. They grew yellow and dropped off. It’s as if the plant already predetermined how many fruit it was going to give a chance to. They did struggle early in the season at one point but they’ve enjoyed it being warmer.
      Hope you get some next year. Which variety was yours? This is an Arava melon
      I’m not ready to hear it’s the last week of summer “La la la.. I can’t hear you> 😂😛

      I have my x4 blueberries in a raised bed and also don’t remember the names without looking at the label. I know I researched re pollination before planting, but defo only one pink lemonade and don’t remember what I learnt, if anything! Harvest was the best it’s been, but small in comparison to the others.
      I grew Minnesota Midget and they grew really well and big quickly, although I had to hand pollinate because the weather was pants for pollinators. I’m not entirely sure what the problem was and suspect some kind of pest damage, not that I found anything. One of the fruits was close to ready and so tried it and wasn’t that bad. Will be using some fruit and veg nematodes this weekend, just in case.
