In 1960 Bremen Germany I took delivery of a Okrasa 1300 factory modified 36hp engine fitted with Abarth muffler, my autobahn sleeper. Times when you could travel the Autobahn for 30mins without seeing another vehicle.
these methods work good on a early engine like this, but if you have a dual port 1600cc, a single Weber with a 009 distributor and an electronic points conversion along with a nice tuned header and muffler combo you would feel a pretty nice difference in the right pedal. always a good idea to make sure the oil is clean and your valves are adjusted properly to.
ok cool thats one thing i didnt know. I really like how you like keeping everything stock and correct. That's the way to go! Not many people like to keep em like that especially with the 6 volts. Always people converting them to 12v
Good Vid. I was reading in the Aug. '63 owners manual that VW's are unique because the "top speed and the cruising speed are the same speed. You can drive all day at 72 MPH." I'm thinking that's why they are under carburated. To prevent over rev. and over heating like a govenor.
Well 36hp starts out at 77mm, if you want to bore out the case you can. But this is a video showing that you do not have to do that, or heavy machining.
Hi Chris Help...I have a problem with the throttle cable .. I have a picture of what is happening. Wish I could attach it. The boot over the spring is catching on the spring causing the motor to race. Not sure what the problem is... Is it the throttle tube is sticking out to far causing the problem? Can't seem to find a photo of what it is suppose to look like.
Those 010 make quite a difference, to those thinking otherwise. Used to have a slow 2nd gear corner that turned up hill, huge difference from low speeds. Had one 36hp I picked up went really well, never worked out way back then. Then the crankshaft broke, been ground like 30 thou under from memory.
Another excellent video...thanks....with my VW 1960 resto project in Sri Lanka, I am keen at improving the engine performance. Will consider the content of this video! (Good stuff!)
Great video mate, building an okrasa motor for my wife's 56 very soon, what size spark plug wires are you running 7mm? love the yellow cloth style ones.
For those who don't know.. a stock 36 hp vw ( 1958) ran Flat Out at 72 mph.Any faster than that and you were either using a tail wind, or going down hill. Very much faster and you would float the valves.. because you were over red-line of 36 rpm substantially. This mathematically determined by the red-line and the gear ratio. Acceleration and toque can be increased for more performance.. but those valve springs limit rpm.. so going much faster in top MPH above 72 with a stock motor.. simply aint possible.
I'm looking to buy a vw beetle. It will be my first bug. I'm thinking of going to the Syracuse nationals to find one. Whatta u think is the best place to find one?
Great video and we are definitely get the Abarth Muffler but do they make them for a 1969 Beetle 1600 motor do you know ? also with you being a VW expert will that type of bumper fit the 69 Beetle ? We love those over all the rest . Thanks
Well 40hp is cool, you can go with a big bore piston and cylinder kit that would not require any machining to the block, and you can get an abarth from vintage speed, with an 019 distributor.
Chris Vallone Thanks for the tip. Will look into it. I like the idea of keeping things period correct. Have a bone stock 23 deluxe a few extra ponies will help driving freeways. 👍
Chris the audio on the video when your talking is very poor, you may need to put on some ear plugs to hear what Im talking about, great video, I have a 57 with this dilemma, thanks for the tip.
if you want to up hp on the cheapish side and not stock you can get a 009 dity, elect points, hot plugs/wires, sand down oil pressure plate, straight exhaust, get rid of the oil bath air cleaner
notice now they have 010 lookalike dizzys that you can have with full electronic ign system, lot hotter spark equals lot more hp, my 36hp 55 beetle will have this system plus wolfsburg west twin carb kit and abarth exhaust also port and polished cyl heads a counterweighted and balanced crank, also might increase comp ratio a litte bit so maybe 60 plus hp might be attainable (thats porsche 356 A performance in a classic beetle) like the sound of that and i can keep up with modern traffic and stay safe!
You could also swap out the old crank for a counterweighted crank...put larger cylinders (bigger bore)...maybe even stroke it...maybe...change the cam and cylinders from single to dual...that'll really breathe life into an old VW engine 😉
Chris, found that the correct distributor for a 36HP should be a VJU4BR8 but you installed a 0 231 129 010. Is there a reason on why not installing the VJU4BR8? Please advice and thanks! Excellent info!
Hi Chris. What type of oil do you recommend for a 36 hp engine during fall and winter months? I live in socal where winters aren't as harsh, though in my area in the high desert in can get pretty cold. Thanks
i have a question? may be kind of dumb but isn't the 36 and 40hp the same displacement? If so could you use the big bore pistons and cylinders (83mm) from a 40hp on a 36hp for more performance?
Information was probably good, but the audio was terrible; had to cut the vid short. I was listening through headphones, and the sound was mostly in the left side, but kept cutting in and out of the right as you moved. It made it was very disrupting, in my opinion, and made it difficult to pay attention to what you were saying.
I play it on my computer thru my TV and it sounds fine. Not really sure whats up. This was made 8 years ago, reuploading is probably not gonna happen, but I can maybe reshoot it.

you seem to be the expert on bugs maybe you could help me out with mine- got a few questions i tried to post the link but it didnt work but you can go to my youtube site and see the vid thanks jd
Chris, I have a question, I was looking on wolfburg west, really good sight and good prices. but I was looking at 25-36 horse motor parts, and I seen these things called barrel shims, and they say they lower compression. why would you want to do that? more pressure more power, especially important for 36 horse! why lower it?
Hey Chris. Would you happen to know of a guide for the different aircooled type1, 2, 3, and 4 engines ever made? Let's say someone throws a aircooled flat 4 core (minus the tin components, and exhaust/intake plumbing w/c might give it away) at you, is there some kind of guide that'll help you identifiy exactly what sort of engine it is, if it's even a corvair engine for that matter? Thanks in advance.
Ok, thanks. Haven't tried searching for videos on y/t on the subject yet. I'm guessing it's gonna take more than just a few books to cover each variant for each type. Not even close to putting it all together about the 36hp, 40hp, 55hp variants, to the cc displacement classifications, 1100, 1200, 1300, 1500, etc., to the different chassis type applications, type 1, 2, 3,4. Who knows, maybe you could write a book on that one if ever you could find the time to spare from your already busy schedule running your business and such. :)
Hey Chris, I have a 66 Beetle 1300cc 6v all original. Plan is to stay that way. It has low compression. What’s the best option to restore the 1300? Is there piston and cylinder kits?
Kimberly Gomez 1600cc but you can have a 1300cc with 2 carb that will make him go faster and stronger. also you can upgrade a 1300cc to 1600cc or a 1500cc to a 1600cc here in brazil this is common.

Hi Chris I have a 1963 beetle down here in Australia and I think my float isn't working properly cause my carby is leaking a lot of fule from the throtle leaver. Hey, I am becoming a first time driver soon in a couple of months. Ever since my dad showed me how easy it was to build and restore a Volkswagen beetle I was very into the 1973 VW beetle. I am thinking of a beetle as my first car that me and my dad can work on together. I am developing a deep passion for working on cars and I grew up with fast and fun cars with my dad. My only question is, how can I improve my Volkswagen 1973 beetle engine that I will get in just a couple of months future? How can I make my beetle go faster than 100 mph and still take it? How can I give her more power from 0-60? And last, how can I give her at least 70-100 hp? I have researched and couldn’t find an answer..:(
Much better sound. Gets rid of that loose socket left in the cylinder sound. I’m sure there was a distributor in eastern Kentucky that sold a fuel additive that boosted HP 37.2% and you can drink it! (Joke)
Christopher Carmona Megasquirt 2 or 3 is used a lot on beetles. Just connect the coolant sensor to one of the cylinder heads, that works just fine. You can run stock ignition system, or electronic controlled without a mechanical distributor. You will need throttle bodies with a throttle position sensor, wiring loom, air intake temperature sensor, wide band lambda sensor, suitable injector's, a electric gasoline pump, fuel pressure regulator, relay and fuse box.
Great video but def. not worth the $800 bucks to me. Seems like it's just a waste when that could go towards some aesthetics. After all the bug was meant to be slow so let's stay true to that lol. Take care Chris
I just bought a 1955 with a 36hp engine original 28pci and a 010 bosch distributor also has the wrong exhaust it has the dual pee shooters. the car at full throttle in 4th gear will only get up to 60 mph is this normal or time for a rebuild?
In 1960 Bremen Germany I took delivery of a Okrasa 1300 factory modified 36hp engine fitted with Abarth muffler, my autobahn sleeper. Times when you could travel the Autobahn for 30mins without seeing another vehicle.
My left ear is having a blast but his neighbor is so lonely it's sad.
Ah ah , you're right. I didn't notice at first..
Thanks for your tips, this sound of the engine is music to my ears!
these methods work good on a early engine like this, but if you have a dual port 1600cc, a single Weber with a 009 distributor and an electronic points conversion along with a nice tuned header and muffler combo you would feel a pretty nice difference in the right pedal.

Sure, but go with an 019 rather than an 010.
Instead of getting the 010 distributor, go with an 019 for the 1200cc. And as far as the muffler. BBT sells the abarth for the 1200.
Another excellent video...thanks....with my VW 1960 resto project in Sri Lanka, I am keen at improving the engine performance. Will consider the content of this video! (Good stuff!)

Hey Chris! I got a 1600cc dual carb set up on my 1964 vw beetle. Would you recommend a freeway flyer transmission?
What would replacing the stock air cleaner with a paper one do
not much
I straight piped my pee shooters and got about the same result as the abarth muffler.

Well 40hp is cool, you can go with a big bore piston and cylinder kit that would not require any machining to the block, and you can get an abarth from vintage speed, with an 019 distributor.

I just bought a 1955 with a 36hp engine original 28pci and a 010 bosch distributor also has the wrong exhaust it has the dual pee shooters. the car at full throttle in 4th gear will only get up to 60 mph is this normal or time for a rebuild?
Hmmm on a hill or straight road? Before you do anything, get a compression test going on that engine.
@@classicvwbugs yea straight road I will check compression after work thanks
