Thanks for the kind words, man. I appreciate hearing from you! And yeah, it's really an adjustment, the empty nest.... I'm glad I have a record collection to distract me, hahaha!
".....people have done so much with it while I wasn't paying attention." I've been listening to some hip-hop lately myself, after not listening for a long time, and that statement sums it up perfectly.
At this point, I've known you so long that it feels a little strange to learn something about you as mundane as, "you don't like coffee".... Funny how this parasocial shit works!
That's a good choice, definitely in my top 5 too. That's the only Stones record where one day, I got up and thought, I need to hear Beggars Banquet RIGHT NOW so I went to Barnes & Noble and bought the copy I have now.
I'm in the same boat on Illmatic, I just never connected with it. Outside of what I'll call Classic Hip Hop (PE, NWA, Cube, Dogg, going back to Bambataa & Sugar Hill) I love jazzy hip hop. The more modern stuff does not grab me. Good seeing the Hip Hop Theologian again! 😜 Tom
I just thought of this analogy, when I was replying to Scott earlier in this comment section, but listening to nothing but 80s/early 90s rap seems almost like listening to nothing but Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly. It's good shit, and important historically, but in the last 30 years, hip hop has also produced some Black Sabbaths, some Iron Maidens, some Killing Jokes, and some Cans.... and I wouldn't want to miss out on that shit in the rock arena, so why would I snooze on rappers going out and finding all kinds of new shit to do with their medium?
@@MetalTheologian I don't dismiss eras out of hand and I'm generalizing, but not a lot of modern hip hop resonates with me. Then again, right now I'm spinning Shabazz Palaces (Lese Majesty).

The Ice Cube record to have for me is Amerikkkas most wanted, my mom took me to the record store on release day to get it. At the time I wasn’t sure what exactly I wanted other than Cube so she asked a rough lookin homie in the rap section what records should my son get to better understand rap music more ,he handed her NWA , DJ quick, Too Short and boogie Down productions tapes. I got them all with my allowance and that started me off pretty strong . My mom is still that cool. She bought my oldest son all his slayer and slipknot records 😂 when her was in grade school . (She asked me first but still)
Well shit man, Amerikkka is a great record, and Ice Cube is a damn good place to start, haha! That's cool that your mom was so cool about it... that's how I've tried to be with my kids. Life is hard enough without putting arbitrary barriers between yourself and the music you enjoy, right? Anyway, awesome story!

Hahaha! Yeah man, the Stones really are fantastic. I still think they're a bit overhyped..... like, if you listen to their early records, I don't necessarily see any reason to say they were better than some of their contemporaries, like the Seeds, the Shadows of Night, or the Standells... but hey, they did grow and get more interesting with time, even if they hung around WAY too long, hahaha.
Maaan, empty nesters!? What a strange adjustment. My kid just started high school, and it's freaking me out a bit. Years going by too fast. I'm glad to hear you don't have any beef with cube, but he's been toothless for a while now so no worries. Although, J-Dee just got out of the pen recently so best keep it copacetic i guess. 😂
Well listen man, if your kid gets into new music, and wants you to hear some of his shit, keep an open mind! hahahaha..... my kids have put me on to all kinds of shit (well, mostly rap, but completely new shit to me), so I'm grateful for that.
That's kinda what I was doing when I first got into rap, a few years ago, but now I feel like I spent all that time just listening to Bill Haley & the Comets and Chuck Berry. It's great stuff, and important music, but the genre has *really* grown up since then. I'll keep my eyes open for that record for you....
I didn’t catch the name of the last record but I liked the odd ball sound. Have you caught any of the YSL Young Thug trial. There is a video of 50 funnest Lil Woody moments.
That record is Avada Kedavra by AJ Suede. Fucking 10/10 record, if you ask me. In fact, I'm gonna listen to it again in a few minutes. I don't know anything about the Young Thug trial, but y'know, even though I'm a rap novice, I still want to keep it a _little_ bit underground.... hahaha

Hahahaha thanks, but it's so true.. there's this whole universe of music I know jack shit about, and right now, I want to hear it ALL!
Once on acid I felt like I was lying in a bed of jello.
