  • Students constructed backpacks out of cardboard, duct tape, and a mystery material of choice. The backpack serves as a vessel which carries but is also carried (by its user). Following an iterative process, they created three full-scale bags and three half-scale prototypes over the course of 4 weeks. They kept the following points in mind while moving their designs forward:
-Begin by deconstructing the box. Transform the cardboard.
-Exploit the properties of cardboard based on the cutting, scoring, and delaminating you have recently learned.
-Perhaps making the cardboard curve, weaving it, or working it into a fabric.
-What function does your mystery material enact that the cardboard cannot? How do the two materials complement each other?
-Is there a relationship between iterations? Are the evolving designs cousins, or siblings?
-Ensure that the backpack fits comfortably, adhering to the human form.
