Some of the lyrics came from an unfinished Townes song or poem, I read once. The lines "ghosts in the basement - screams from the kitchen" came from Townes, I remember.
This song always reminds me of the 1979 movie "Apocalypse Now" with Brando and Martin Sheen. Something about the slow driving beat and guitar that sets the mood. I can just picture Martin Sheen in the jungles of Cambodia with camouflage face paint on hunting down Brando's character in the movie.
This song has some structural similarities to the Doors song "The End" which features in that movie (they're both played on a D chord on the guitar, etc), which probably explains your impression.
They played this in Melbourne last week 2nd Feb 2023. Superb!
Saw this in 1998…and fell in love with Margo.
The Junkies with Karin Bergquist and Linford Detweiler from Over the Rhine, a short but magical relationship

I love everything about this song.

Haunting. Yes. Exactly.
So wonderful! One of my favorite CJ songs.
Co-written by Townes, recorded on the 1 year anniversary of his passing
