Mt Rogers: Lewis Fork, Grayson Highlands, Cabin Ridge Loop

- A three night backpacking trip with my son beginning at the Lewis Fork Trailhead and camping along Cliffside Trail the first night. On day 2 we continue up Cliffside Trail to Pine Mountain Trail to Crest Trail to Scales. Then we take the AT over Stone Mountain and camp along Wilson Creek. My son leaves on the morning of day 3 and I continue along the AT through Grayson Highlands State Park then take the Virginia Highlands Horse Trail to Cabin Ridge, where I camp. On day 4 I continue on the VHHT to Deep Gap and cut over to the AT briefly to the Mt. Rogers Trail. Next I take the Lewis Fork Spur Trail to the Lewis Fork Trail and then Cliffside Trail back to the Lewis Fork Trail to the trailhead.

Great trip Bryan! I really enjoyed seeing the variety at Mount Rogers NRA! Lots of forest but also beautiful open areas too! I’d love to be there when the blueberries are ripe, the bushes look amazing! Some of those clouds looked ominous … I bet it was clear and fresh after the cold front blew through.. Thank you so much Jennifer! Mount Rogers is a great place to backpack. It's difficult to cover much distance when the blueberries are ripe: you stop for 5 minutes and eat blueberries then hike a few hundred feet and stop to eat more blueberries. We really got lucky with the weather. The weather around the Mt. Rogers high country can change quick and is usually much colder than the nearby areas.
@@BryanDeLay Lol! Sounds like fun with the blueberries, and important to watch out for the weather! Great trip! 👌We had almost 2” of rain here in Seattle yesterday, whew, that was a lot for us. Glad we were inside, not out on the trail!
Great video, that is a beautiful area. We camped at Grayson Highlands state park starting May 17 for four nites. We hiked on the AT towards Mt. Rogers and saw the horses. We also rode our bikes on the Virginia Creeper trail down to Damascus. It was a fun trip and it would have been nice to meet you. We hope to go back some day. Thanks for taking us along!

I was in spirit hiking with you again on this outing. Always good to see Nathan make an appearance and share a campfire, he sure is a hiking machine. The footage of that thunderhead was spectacular as you appeared to have turned up your pace to avoid it. Another great area to hike with many options along the way. Sorry I'm late, Bryon....Finally watched and really enjoyed. As you may remember, Mt Rogers is right in my backyard. Great area.
I've had a hectic spring but I will be heading to Washington/Jefferson NP around the WV/VA line soon for a three nighter. The AT runs right through there and there are a couple of spur trails that make for some terrific backpacking.
No problem! Yes, I remember that you live in southwest VA. I've hiked the AT through Washington/Jefferson NP; very beautiful area. Also I used to live in Roanoke in the early 80's working in the Kroger real estate department.

I see why this is one of your favorites... absolutely stunning terrain and scenery, I loved all the tent sites too. Great weather too, with the exception of the down pour.
You should check out Mt. Rogers sometime Nicole. It's one of the best places in the south to backpack.

Thanks Stricky! Nathan's first backpacking trip was when he was 5 and we've had many backpacking trip together. These days I'm not waiting on him; he's the one doing the waiting.
Covered a considerable amount of that area and have still never been to the top of Rodgers. Guess it's cause I've heard that there isn't much of a view. Can you verify? Nice work Bryan and thanks for the effort. 5 weeks and it's time for the Winds!!
Thanks farbeondriven! I can confirm there is no view from Mt. Rogers. Just a thick forest of spruce fir trees. End of July probably, so about 8 weeks.

I've never thru-hiked the AT, but I've sectioned it from Springer to near Blacksburg, VA. I would agree 100% with you two choices. Of course living in east Tennessee, I'm a little partial.:)

As always Bryan, your videos do not dissappoint! I loved how you really showed the ways you set up your shelter, bear hang food and your pow wow station against the logs. You have discussed your methods in other videos but really showed them as part of your camping here. My daughter and I did the Grayson Highlands a few years ago. Along Pine Mountain we were digusted with the amount of un-buried human waste and toilet paper! Hopefully that is no longer the case. I understood the horses and long horns doing that but for the life of me the humans had no excuse for such practice. I love seeing you and Nathan hooking up to enjoy the outdoors together. All the best. Thanks for all the effort you put into sharing these trips.
Thanks Michael! I try to mix up videos of my camp set up, so as not to show the same thing every time. Although I did show a little more in this video. Thankfully I didn't notice any human waste along Pine Mountain Trail this year. It's beyond me why people don't bury their waste.

Thanks Out-O-Here! Actually I've ordered a MLD silnylon Duomid and should receive it any day now.
For breakfast I eat the same thing every day: about 1/4 cup of pumpkin seeds, a cup of homemade trail mix (almonds, walnuts, Craisins, dried cherries and raisins) and a RX bar. And of course tea!
@@BryanDeLay Great Bfast. Amazing how 1/4 cup makes so much food. Coaches oats, dried Gogi berries, nuts, and some kind of spice, fav is Cinnamon. Always carry assorted teas. Dandy blend and Cacao Powder with very littley Monk fruit sweetener (replaces old fav of Coffee) - Bryan - thanks!!!!! !
Making me want to get back out to Grayson Highlands! Fortunate to avoid the storm day 2, those were some ominous clouds. Hope you had a good time at Trail Days. One of these years I'll have to check it out.
The Mt. Rogers High Country is one of my favorite places in the south to backpack and I normally go to Trail Days as an excuse to backpack Mt. Rogers. They did not have Trail Days in 2020 and that was the only year I didn't do a trip to Mt. Rogers in the last 17.
Hey Bryan, didn’t take you long to get on trail after we saw each other at trail days. I wish I met up for a day Sunday or Monday. Around the Scales or Wise shelter area. Great shots of those storm clouds up on the highlands. 👍😎
My son didn't get to Trail Day until 4:00 and he spent sometime checking out the vendors, so we got a later start than I'd hoped for. We really got lucky on the rain. You could actually see the rain falling in the distance.

Thanks Graham! My DCF Trail Star is wearing out. I've had to patch it in five places, it has small pin holes in the fabric and fraying in places. MLD estimates the life of a DCF Trail Star to be about 200 nights and I currently have 249 on mine. Before the DCF Trail Star I had a silnylon one and have been using a Trail Star tarp since May 2012. So I decided to try a MLD Duomid, silnylon version since the fabric seems to have a longer life. I received the Duomid a little over a week ago and did a two-night trip last weekend and so far I'm very pleased.

Does the SOS blanket really help keep the ground from absorbing your body heat?
The SOL blanket probably does help some, but I've never tried to make a comparison. I mostly use it as a ground cloth because it's very lightweight.
