Inside Skopje, North Macedonia

  • We are back in the Balkans! Located in Southeast Europe, North Macedonia and its capital of Skopje have roots that go back thousands of years. Various empires, especially the Ottomans, made their stamp here. Today, you’ll find remnants of the past in the Old Town and Old Bazaar, as well as the 15th-century Stone Bridge, which connects to the newer city now known for its inordinate amount of statues. Yes, statues. There’s even a local joke that there are more statues than residents in Skopje.
    But we didn’t come here to count statues.
    Instead, we spent about a month in Skopje to walk the streets, shop at the bazaar (one of the oldest and largest in the Balkans), search for the best local food, attempt to hike up Mount Vodno, and-of course-learn about the history and current state of Skopje from its locals. (Like, why is it called NORTH Macedonia?)

    City of Skopje in Macedonia ✅ Don’t care that Greece calls it North because they occupy Macedonian land ( Northern Greece is what they call ) That land they occupy since 1912 does not belong to the Greeks.

      It is odd ... Greece does not look or feel like Macedonia. I find that Greece has a feeling that is quite different. Are you Macedonian?

    • @BigSmallTravel

      @@eastwestworld6648It depends what part of Greece you are referring to. The Northern Greek region of Macedonia shares land with North Macedonia so there are definitely some similarities.

      @@BigSmallTravel The Greeks viewed them as barely Greek. But what is Greekness? It’s pretty convoluted. The kingdom of Macedon and the Greek city states had many similarities, but also differences.

    Your videos obviously don't have any likes.
    Seems to me it's more insulting than respectful.
    When you go to Rome, do you speak about the many statues there?
    You have statues in every country in the world, something what Skopje was missing after the catastrophic earthquake.
    Learn how to pronounce the name of the city which is Skopje (Skopye) not Skope!
    The river doesn't divide the city on ethnic grounds and there're certain Albanian population in the old bazar because the Albanians are mostly selling vegetables on the market. Foreign flags you can find in other countries too, why is so weird to see Albanian flags?
    Skopje is among the most polluted cities in Europe during winter but certainly isn't on the top of that list.

    • @BigSmallTravel
      @BigSmallTravel  2 месяца назад

      Thanks for the comments again. Your observations are appreciated very much. First, we really enjoyed the people of Skopje, they were very kind and helpful to us. Also, we liked our time there very much. So, we discuss the Albanian flags because we saw so many hanging in various parts of town. We would expect to see the flag of Macedonia more ... We met a few locals from Skopje who thought the river divides but again it is an opinion of course not a fact. Are you from Skopje? Pronunciation is difficult in Macedonian so forgive us ... Lastly, we speak to more locals in the video at 13:40

    • @danielpowers84
      @danielpowers84 2 месяца назад

      @@BigSmallTravel Albanian flags you can see mostly on the big market where they sell them but also Macedonian and Turkish flags. Macedonian flags you can see everywhere on the public institutions, main squares. During public holidays you can see Albanian flags alongs side with the Macedonian flag only in the municipalities where the Mayor is from Albanian origin. Since the big market is part of such municipality, that's why you can see them.
      The main square Macedonia is part of the western side of the river and is mostly with Macedonian population and the market is on the eastern side of the river, but the eastern part of the country is mostly with Macedonian population. The major Albanian population is on the northern part of the city and the northwestern part of the country. How's possible the river to divide the city and the country by ethnicity?
      It can be an opinion on shallow minds only.
      Maybe it's just my personal feeling, but I think that your video is more with intention to diminish the value of the city.
      Again, have in mind, that people in Macedonia don't like to call their country North Macedonia especially when you emphasize that "north"!
      I already explained to you in another message how and why that "north" was attached to the name Macedonia.
      If you like to get more LIKES from the locals of the country what you visit, try to avoid mentioning things what they don't like to hear or pin their ears and eyes.
      All best!
