This is excellent on the part of this Brother. For the young men who've never worn a suit and tie to realize how different an impression is drawn had an immediate impact.
Most, I'm sure, never even visualized themselves in dress/business/formal attire, and how it affects one's perception of an individual.
Even as a middle-aged adult, it still applies. I remember a few years ago, I was coming from a Military conference, but I wore civilian attire; a white button down with a tie, and slacks. My jacket was on a hanger in the car.
I took my mother-in-law to an appointment with her Cardiologist at a hospital, and I carried a clipboard with crossword puzzles to pass the time.
All of the Medical Staff that I encountered or crossed paths with in the corridors made the assumption that I was on the staff as well. They all made eye contact and exchanged pleasantries with me in passing, etc.
When I go there in street clothes, there's hardly a shred of acknowledgement of your presence as a regular, run of the mill black man.
Something that I observe in a lot of OUR youth, is that this is not how they visualize themselves. There are a lot of factors involved in how they make self perceptions; i.e. being a Nerd or a square, not having regularly engaged with anyone who works in White Collar positions outside of Churches and School Admin., etc.
School dress codes are a START, but I think that wearing a suit once a week, and business casual on another day of the week helps to reinforce a more positive picture of self in our youth.
Let's not talk about the young ladies whom I've seen show up for interviews dressed for the club...but to THEM, they are dressed for success.
