I stumbled across your videos, I think you walked by our apartment in Nice. (We are from NorCal as well). Sorry about the unusually wet and cold spring weather. Rebt is far more affordable than buying, but apartments are in high demand. You were walking around the Carre d'Or, one of the most expensive neighborhoods. The prices drop as you move out of the center, and there will be less tourists. There are a bunch of specialty visas, but some people (and all the retirees) are on a non-lucrative type of visas (and some do remote work that way, a gray area in the law). It is expensive relative to Greece and Thailand, but it is anywhere 20 to 40% less than NorCal; some friends say their costs are 1/2 of NY. On restaurant prices, remember that tipping is not expected (round up for exceptional service) and tax is included.

I'd choose the lesser expensive apartment and take the tram to the old town parts. I've been to France and loved it. Renting a car is good that way you can be free and travel around. Lots of good food. I love it there.
Johnny, I'm surprised you weren't up on Nice yet. I am from NY but split my time between London, Nice, Bangkok and NYC. Nice is my absolute favorite vacation town in Europe. It is so stunningly beautiful from the old town to the promenade, has amazing food, surprising friendly locals (I am Asian American too and they are all super nice down there compared to Paris). I like it because it's not overrun with tourists. It's like the Ao Nang of France where people base themselves to visit other areas of the Cote D'Azur.
Well, NICE is very beautiful, "nice address," and it's a city that seems to have all the things (plus an ocean) that you like, i.e., friendly people, eateries, lots of fresh air and sports, old architecture, very walkable, easy living, no grafitti, clean. I'd say give it a go, but do try it out for a little while before taking a deep dive. That would be my advice.
The great thing about european cities is the walkability factor, in Germany it is like this, and Nice as well, you are totally right! It is so good not having the necessity to have a car. At least this is what i think 😉
I was there around 6 years with my ex. We stayed at a hotel in the old Nice. It seemed like a generally friendly place and never needed to speak much French while I was there!
About the US vs Europe - I lived over 20 years in the US and now I've lived over 20 years in Europe, and I think Europe is much nicer, on the whole. The US has its good points, but to me the negatives outweigh them substantially. About moving to Nice - my vote would be yes! You can still visit Ukraine and help Ukraine while living there.
Moving to France is not something to take lightly, because it is essential to learn French, at least at a good basic level: administration, the prefecture, taxes, work, everything is done in French. But life there is sweet and pleasant, incomparable, I believe. Nice, what's more, if you enjoy helping Ukraine, is a 24-hour drive from kyiv.

Of the three Nice would be easily the best. Important point: France has socialized medical care. Last fall I fell while walking in Paris and completely dislocated my shoulder, at 71 yrs old.Took an ambulance, various pain medications, xrays ,cat scan, sling and generally excellent care. Even as an American without travel insurance the total bill was 158 euros! mostly just the deductibles. Also great food, international tourists and pretty darn good climate!

You literally could go "old school Johnny" and open up a fight training course, rent a space and be fully booked before the ink dries. I propose that option if, for example, you wouldn't want to interfere with whatever income or business structures you've already got in place. But more to facilitate the long stay visa part of a move like that. I've been preparing, a couple of years now, for a move to the region--not the city, in just a few more months. So the planning is the counterpart to falling in love with Nice. Because the French tax situation is a very, very big consideration. Once you get in that web, you're in. But you CAN make a plan, as an international guy, to minimize the impact.

If he can learn French, then he can just hop to Paris a few times a month for that, or even just go to London. It's similar to living in Pattaya or Phuket and going into Bangkok a few times a month for all of those important items that you listed. I agree, if you don't have that nearby, life gets boring in those types of beach towns.

Another superb video Johnny, merci beaucoup. When I worked in Monaco I spent a lot of time in Nice and Cannes but wouldn't recommend them as ideal places for you to move to (for a start the WiFi infrastructure isn't as fast as you'd need and out of season a lot of bars and restaurants close down). Hopefully things improve in Ukraine, the war ends and life there goes back to normal.

Yes, it would indeed be nice to live in Nice, HOWEVER, the reality is that unless someone is a citizen of the EU, it is very convoluted to get permission to reside in France. It requires a lot of time, a lot of bureaucracy, a lot of money, etc. as Europe does not just let someone live there because they want to. Same is true in USA and most other countries-unless you are a natural born citizen, it is a major process to get citizenship. I wanted to move/live in Europe years ago, but too many hoops, ladders, and cost to do so...sigh
Actually Johnny, you could only stay for 90 days (3 months) and then you would have to live for 90 days before you could return. I think if you made a huge investment, like buying property, that gives you some leverage...
Johnny, I do agree with most of your subscribers, if you ever decide to live anywhere for a long period time, first rent an apartment there for a couple of months, and then decide. If I was you, you’re still a young man, I would travel because you must remember as we get older, our body start to fail, then that’s a whole different ballgame.

No, a wonderful and interesting country to visit, but not to live in for a long time. France is basically the combination of all the three states on the west coast of America, but hardly anyone speaks English and too many people smokes.
Hey Johnny, being myself a digital nomad for more than 10 years I am always drawn back to three destinations - Spain for Europe (my wife and myself love Malaga), Thailand (I lived and worked in BKK for 7 years) for SEA and Buenos Aires in South America. Those three cities are our bases. Most of the year (6 months) we spend in Malaga, the winter months in Buenos Aires and the rest in TH. In my opinion, TH has the best price-value in the whole world. Life there is just wonderful as you know, so easy and cheap. Malaga is a fantastic place in case you want to stay in Europe. Beautiful city, architecture, food, culture, friendly people paired with an amazing nature (ocean and mountains, lots of nature). Once you live at the ocean it is hard to go back, its just a different level of life quality. For South America, we really love Buenos Aires which is a fantastic place if you want to escape the winter. The city is faszinating with amazing architecture, exciting culture and one of the most amazing coffee cultures in the world. I never take of fence about the comments you make about living in other countries. You are correct about architecture, food etc. as compared to the US. Having only lived in the US and never having travelled overseas I enjoy hearing your perspective. Many things have changed in the US under present administration and would love the opportunity to live elsewhere. However, you need language skills and other skills which I do not have. Keep doing what you are doing.

I think most people in Europe consider the US to be the world’s most important tech leader and driver of freedom and opportunity. Without US sacrifices, it is unlikely that Europe would step-up and save Ukraine.
In most of Europe, cities are all apartments, as its the best way to design density for live/work/eat/shop neighborhoods. Houses are a countryside and American thing.

when you say that I'm assuming you're talking about public safety and the culture has changed because of immigration... I live in Poland and Finland, I feel more comfortable in Poland than most of the formerly 'developed' parts of the EU.

You literally could go "old school Johnny" and open up a fight training course, rent a space and be fully booked before the ink dries. I propose that option if, for example, you wouldn't want to interfere with whatever income or business structures you've already got in place. But more to facilitate the long stay visa part of a move like that.
I've been preparing, a couple of years now, for a move to the region--not the city, in just a few more months. So the planning is the counterpart to falling in love with Nice. Because the French tax situation is a very, very big consideration. Once you get in that web, you're in. But you CAN make a plan, as an international guy, to minimize the impact.

somewhere where there is more prospects than just beach and eat...something that has good weather is nice but should have something more going for it in terms of industry, events, projects, social opportunities, making a life.
If he can learn French, then he can just hop to Paris a few times a month for that, or even just go to London. It's similar to living in Pattaya or Phuket and going into Bangkok a few times a month for all of those important items that you listed. I agree, if you don't have that nearby, life gets boring in those types of beach towns.

Another superb video Johnny, merci beaucoup. When I worked in Monaco I spent a lot of time in Nice and Cannes but wouldn't recommend them as ideal places for you to move to (for a start the WiFi infrastructure isn't as fast as you'd need and out of season a lot of bars and restaurants close down). Hopefully things improve in Ukraine, the war ends and life there goes back to normal.

Yes, it would indeed be nice to live in Nice, HOWEVER, the reality is that unless someone is a citizen of the EU, it is very convoluted to get permission to reside in France. It requires a lot of time, a lot of bureaucracy, a lot of money, etc. as Europe does not just let someone live there because they want to. Same is true in USA and most other countries-unless you are a natural born citizen, it is a major process to get citizenship. I wanted to move/live in Europe years ago, but too many hoops, ladders, and cost to do so...sigh

Actually Johnny, you could only stay for 90 days (3 months) and then you would have to live for 90 days before you could return. I think if you made a huge investment, like buying property, that gives you some leverage...

Nice is my favorite place. I sit in another famous place wishing I was in Nice. I can't figure out how to live there.

No, a wonderful and interesting country to visit, but not to live in for a long time. France is basically the combination of all the three states on the west coast of America, but hardly anyone speaks English and too many people smokes.

Hey Johnny, being myself a digital nomad for more than 10 years I am always drawn back to three destinations - Spain for Europe (my wife and myself love Malaga), Thailand (I lived and worked in BKK for 7 years) for SEA and Buenos Aires in South America. Those three cities are our bases. Most of the year (6 months) we spend in Malaga, the winter months in Buenos Aires and the rest in TH. In my opinion, TH has the best price-value in the whole world. Life there is just wonderful as you know, so easy and cheap. Malaga is a fantastic place in case you want to stay in Europe. Beautiful city, architecture, food, culture, friendly people paired with an amazing nature (ocean and mountains, lots of nature). Once you live at the ocean it is hard to go back, its just a different level of life quality. For South America, we really love Buenos Aires which is a fantastic place if you want to escape the winter. The city is faszinating with amazing architecture, exciting culture and one of the most amazing coffee cultures in the world. Not to forget the very low cost of living (blue dollar rate is your best friend). Wishing you all the best finding your place and thanks for your videos :) Cheers from Malaga

I never take of fence about the comments you make about living in other countries. You are correct about architecture, food etc. as compared to the US. Having only lived in the US and never having travelled overseas I enjoy hearing your perspective. Many things have changed in the US under present administration and would love the opportunity to live elsewhere. However, you need language skills and other skills which I do not have. Keep doing what you are doing.

I think most people in Europe consider the US to be the world’s most important tech leader and driver of freedom and opportunity. Without US sacrifices, it is unlikely that Europe would step-up and save Ukraine.

In most of Europe, cities are all apartments, as its the best way to design density for live/work/eat/shop neighborhoods. Houses are a countryside and American thing.

I'd personally chose the south of France over Ukraine, hello Johnny I have been following you for years but I wouldn't say Monaco was the most expensive place to buy take away food, take a look at the prices in Geneva or Zurich it is extortionate there. PS. I have nothing against Ukraine they are hard working people with a good heart who are honest, not sure about some of their government officials, it's well known there is corruption going on. Thanks! And agreed, Zurich was super expensive when I passed through. As for Ukraine, the country was plagued by corruption from the Russian days, but since President Zelensky has been fighting it since 2019 and has made a lot of progress to stamp it out.
