The grease nipple was simple operator error. However I’m not sure you can blame him for a loose fitting. It would have came loose no matter who was using it, it was only a matter of time.
That fitting was knocked loose from that cover plate being smashed into it. Looks like the guy was being rough with it and had a bunch of junk all wedged and smashed into that area which caused the damage.

@@wranglerstar FWIW, I've been watching since the days of taking down ol' mighty with the crosscut saw and this is the first video that's been promoted to me in forever. They’re pretty simple rules, but few people follow them any more. It’s the same reason that my brother in-law only lets me borrow stuff, and I let him borrow stuff. We know that we can trust each other.
That's right. It goes for boats too. I can't count how many times, I heard of people loaning their boats to friends, neighbors, or relatives, only to get to get it back with an engine destroyed, because they didn't mix oil on the gas! Most boats used 2 stroke outboards back then.
One of my biggest gripe’s is when I would have to go get the borrowed item back! One would believe that you shouldn’t have to hunt your own stuff down.
As someone on the other end of this, I once borrowed a friend's pick up truck for a few hours. I was sooo afraid of damaging or scratching it in any way, that it just wasn't worth the trouble at the end. Plus I still had to get him something to thank him for it. Now I just rent what I need, if in doubt pay the $20 damage waiver, and it's completely stress-free. I don't like to borrow what I can't afford to instantly replace.
Same here.. we have a rental store where we frequently rent equipment. That way we don't deal with any maintenance, repairs or monthly payments. However, I like the idea of working trading goods/services. Its just something that needs to be very clearly and reasonably communicated from both parties- something that a lot of people really struggle with.
With the exception of the zert it looks like he didn't actually damage anything, and it was going to go south whether he borrowed it or not. With that said if he knew there was an issue he should have been right there with you working on it to fix it. And if it had been a bad line then he, as a good neighbor, should have owned that.
There was more damage than that, the guard on the back of the counter weight, the big protection plate for that main piston, and the mounting hole for, I forget the name, chains and pins was bent so bad it was binding. He dinged that machine up pretty good.
He brought it back with a dent in the front cylinder protection, not fueled up and it was leaking at the locking mechanism, if I could not fix it, I wouldhave driven it to a dealer to have it fixed at my expense...
My philosophy these days is, God blessed me with it, I need to be generous with it. If I can't afford to lose it, I won't lend it, I will go help them out myself with it
A “friend” that would knowingly return an item to friend in damaged condition is about as bad as a “friend” that would air their grievance with a few million strangers on the internet.
He deserved it for what he did to the equipment while he had it, he dented a cylinder cover plate and returned with fuel tank empty. When I borrowed equipment, it always went back to the owner in better shape and full of fuel, ALWAYS.
Quick tip here. You never loan out your equipment. The way you help someone out is you go with your equipment and do the job yourself, you offer your service.
Love the new property Cody! I have been watching since you were clearing the property up in the mountains! You're a big inspiration for me brother! What’s the etiquette on “sorry you’re never borrowing this again” with neighbours? I have no problem with something breaking when borrowed if the person lets me know, and it wasn’t negligent. I don’t own new things so stuff breaks all the time, and I’ll be sure to let people know what to look for when things need to stop.
I would just say you aren't loaning things out right now, and direct them elsewhere to what they are looking for. No need to lie, just make it clear that your stuff isn't available to them, but you still hope they can find what they need elsewhere.
It’s very difficult for me to tell people no, but Its gotten to the point where I have too. I just tell them, I wish I could loan it, but I can’t afford to fix it, or replace it if it gets ruined. They usually can’t afford it either, so they understand! It’s a lot cheaper for both of us for them to just go rent one.
We assume the neighbor didn’t say anything. He probably didn’t know what he did and didn’t see the drip right away. There are a lot of ways to do this for a fairly unfamiliar user. I’m sure there is a backstory. I doubt Cody just made this video without letting the neighbor know. You aren’t going to ruin a relationship with a neighbor by doing this video. So assume other comms we are unaware of. Having a decent relationship with your neighbors is very strategic and if Cody is following the advice In His videos than I’m sure he maintains a decent relationship with neighbors.
I think in life we should share our good fortunes, and that includes our equipment if we can. If a piece of equipment is not returned to us. The way we expect it to be a. What it meant for me to loan that person the piece of equipment to them. That I trusted them. If they’re actually your friend, they don’t want to disappoint you and there’s a good chance, they just didn’t know any better.
Sometimes things just go bad. I've borrowed before and I hate borrowing because of this very thing. I borrowed a craftsman half inch wrench from my neighbor. He just brought it over. I didn't even ask. I didn't end up using it but I set it on the ground one time and when I went to give it to him it was missing the selector switch... thankfully I had my own half inch craftsman to trade and I warranteed his at Lowes and got a free new wrench.
That grease fitting is prone to damage no matter what you do. I’m a cat mechanic by trade. Holt cat is my branch. I’ve worked a mobile mechanic rig for 16 years now . If you have any questions I’d love to help.
Always ask if they have experience with said tool/equipment. If not donate some time to help or ask them to rent from a rental shop. Homeowners pay a bigger price repairing their own equipment than renters who are insured.
Before tightening loose fittings be sure that the O rings are not cut or seriously damaged by being pushed out . Sometimes You will be lucky to loosen the fitting and have the O ring pop back into place , tighten the fitting and finish the job. You may get lucky and get more life out of that O ring or replace it at the earliest opportunity.
I think you owe your neighbor an apology. Unless you greased it before you loaned it out you could have done the grease fitting. As for the hose I'm finding it hard to blame your neighbor on that
What about the fact the fuel wasn't topped off? Scratched up counter balance, bent piston guard, broken zerk fitting. If the only issue was the leak you'd be correct. However, in this situation the machine was abused.
seems to me you lent out a piece of equipment that was defective. it unlikely any of those 3 fixes had anything to do with the operator and more to do with who is maintaining it. 1. the loose fitting cannot be accessed without disassembly. 2 the grease zert apparently did not get grease the last service. the bracket might have been bent by your neighbor but stuff happens. tell him and maybe he will help you fix it. either way blessing are just that. you are blessed with this equipment and you neighbor is blessed by you. oh and great video.
The neighbor had all kinds of wood and concrete debris all wedged and smashed around the coupler from whatever he was doing with it. The debris smashed that small plate into the hose and caused it to come loose. He even managed to get a shackle all wedged up in the hole it was hanging in from being rough with the machine. Not sure how or why you think Cody didnt grease the zerk before, that was a minor fix and can get damaged even by a pro though.
I run these types of equipment every day. Have for 20 years and to be honest that hose was no bodies fault. If anyone's it would of been manufacturing oversight not tightening it or having the hoses too taught causing pulling on them when operating. I agree you have to be careful who you loan too, generally best not too loan at all. But I don't believe the person you loaned this too is at fault.
So if he is a non operator you cant really expect this not to happen unless you train him with your expensive equipment or have your man servant train him. Im glad you are doing videos like this again. I miss them. Take care and god bless.
Have been on the other side of this issue. Needed to take a steer to the butcher. I usually just rent a cattle trailer for $50. This time the 1/2 buyer of the beef did not want to pay his share of the trailer rental. " My Uncle said we could use his trailer for free.".......................ok I guess... Hooked up the trailer. Drove to the scale weighed empty. Then loaded up the steer. Ran across the scale again. Got the steer weight. Heavy!!! Let him eat for free to long. Took to the butcher... After unloading. Noticed the the trailer wheels were bent at an angle. Sure enough the rusted out Axle was broke right in the center. Took to the local welder for a look see. $350 bucks he could sleeve it. But recommended a replacement. He had a few used on hand from upgrading others. And would cut us a deal $550 installed. Of course I am stewing.... The buyer went to talk to the owner. And I am talking to my wife about spending the steer money fixing a borrowed junk heap. She was not pleased. Buyer returned after talking to the owner. He said we did not need to fix it. It was obviously rusted out before hand. We just needed to nurse it home. Nice guy... Could have went the other way. And I would not have fought him on it. I said yes and I wont give something back broke. New rule NEVER BORROW THINGS!!! Go rent them.
You can see the care you take with your equipment by looking at that pin! you have had that a couple years now and I didn't see any wear at all! As an equipment mechanic, I can say, that is impressive!
Annoying I’m sure. Glad I was an easy an easy fix and even more glad that the weather has turned for the better and you’re getting outside more. For you and me both. Man servant? An interesting way to put it.
@@claytonwoolfe it sure did, look at where it was bent. It got pushed back and the corner of the bracket pushed against the nut on the line, it loosened it just enough so the pressure made it leak. 100%

@wranglerstar Life hack on the zip ties I never thought to do that as a regular thing I've done it a few times when I didn't have one but never connected the two to save on zip ties and one of different sized and types from various jobs. Thank you for that
In this situation do you speak to the neighbor about the condition it was returned in or just let it go? Thanks for the great content Cody! It's relaxing sipping a coffee and watching you work on machines.
Somehow i think Mr Cody lost a subscriber. I wouldn't borrow a tool from this guy if my life depended on it. i may ask him to help but i wouldn't use any of his stuff. Mighty Cody sitting on his mountain top loaning out favors to the serfs and telling them how incompetent they are.
That's good general advice for commercial situations, but there was obviously no pressure in the hose at that time. Such pedantry is what causes people to simply ignore all safety advice from so-called experts. Such comments like this are overtly harmful to safety.
I will concede that he had the pressure off when sticking his fingers in the area of question. However, still a great opportunity to export some safety knowledge for those who like their hands. Let's say the pressure was on. While I don't know the specifics of his machine, my backhoe can run up to nearly 3000 psi in the hydraulic lines. Oil @ 3000 psi in a 1" line being forced through a fine crack or pin hole has a very high concentrated force. This can easily sever fingers that get to close. Lastly, the kevlar covers around the hydraulic line are an excellent precaution. They keep the hoses from physical abrasion and UV damage as well as do some shielding against leaks.
This goes for boats too. I can't count how many times, I heard of people loaning their boats to friends, neighbors, or relatives, only to get to get it back with an engine destroyed, because they didn't mix oil on the gas! Most boats used 2 stroke outboards back then.
That Amsoil EP grease is awesome!! I use the marine version for the helicopter maintenance for all helicopters I service. Meets or exceeds MIL-G-23557C (exceeds by a long way). Great short video and awesome work you are doing on the new place. What are your thoughts on fire season this year? I was performing a helicopter repair just south of you(Oregon side, near the Dalles) and noted exceeding high temps so early as well as afternoon lightning and Thunder buildups towards madras. I hope we get continued rain for a bit, so fire season doesn’t turn biblical. Though we are in end times so who knows!?
I wish mine was that easy to fix after loaning to my neighbor. Mine cracked the thumb cylinder. Bent to lower thumb pivot pin and thumb it’s self. He was trying to pick up rocks that weighed much as my machine. I think he was just holding the bucket curl in and thumb grab levers against each other during the lifts. Live and learn I guess.
Please don’t be so quick to accuse. Better to say looks like X caused the cover plate to bend and someone put to much elbow into the grease fitting. No one is perfect. Buy the way love that you had everything at your fingertips to repair your CAT. Even on level ground. Also Best video in 7 months I enjoy your cometary and miss them. The weather out there looks great. Makes your goat milk hairpiece Glisan in the sunshine. Love ya..
I am not a mechanic, but one told me that the red hydraulic fluid is a special high dollar environmentally friendly fluid. It is basically vegetable oil that is chemically engineered to work in a hydraulic system. I would never mix it with regular fluid. You would have to flush the whole system to use regular hydraulic fluid. Probably best to stick to what the manufacture recommends.
I woke up yesterday and noticed my neigbir was working on his brakes. I thought maybe I should go offer to help. Low and behold he randomly messages me and asked if I have a C Clamp and ofcourse I do. I even made it easy on him and told him to put the c clamp in my mail box to keep him from walking all the way back to my house which is a good distance. When I get back it is in the mail box but it's bent where I'm assuming he torqued on the turn handle so hard and that's no big deal. The big deal is he did not say a damn thing to me about bending it. It's damn near impossible to help people anymore
I rented a brand new Cat, same model; had 2.3 hrs on it. Same exact fitting was leaking. I think it's a common design error on that model. The current models quick coupler has been redesigned.
We once let a client use our landscaping excavator over the weekend. Said he had experience. Monday morning we drive up and the thing is on it's side on a perfectly flat area of ground. Guy was rich, and paid for the damage, but I still have trouble figuring how he did it.
ive had lots of stuff come back to me broken when i have lent my stuff out and they don't even tell you they have broken it just give it you back and say thanks but when they call again to loan them they don't get it unlerss i state they pay for a new one if broken its not cheep to replace your stuff now days
The grease fitting might have been done, but the loose fitting hose connection is just a hick up.I would want to work on the connection myself just to make sure thats all it was.

Cody I got a XR 650 brand new 2023 and had about 500 miles on it and over shot a corner yesterday, I am surprisingly ok, But i completely destroyed my bike. Bent the entire frame wheels, everything. I have collision insurance but im just not sure what to do. Should I file a claim or try to fix it myself? What would you do?
That's really ironic he's like don't loan the equipment he'll come back broken but that could have just happened when you were using it too they didn't do anything negligent to have it come undone inside behind a plate
Cats got to do better with their hose routing for their quick connects !!!! Every one i have been on from a brand new 305.5 to a 352 have had hoses rub and bust or at least having to stop and tighten the fittings over and over again.... and i love cat equipment
Even if the neighbor was a good friend, Cody still seems to be the kinda guy to have the neighbor show him the skills before letting em take the equipment
lemme guess, GrandDad had a little greaser port for that replacement huh? lol enjoy these kinds of videos. whether it be 5 minutes 10 minutes or even 15 minutes with a talk at the end. its always fun to join in the shop and learn a thing or two.
The fitting coming loose will happen if you are an "operator" or not. Thats not their fault, it just happens. The smashed grease fitting happens to operators with 1000s of hours under their belt as well and is an easy fix. That being said? Yeah, I wouldnt loan equipment either unless I know who is running it and what they are doing. I borrow skid steers and mini-ex's from time to time, and I never bring the machine back dirty or ungreased or low on fluids. My friends know I will take care of their equipment and trust me with it.
Midwest Guy would never loan equipment, he would go do the job for his neighbor then thank the neighbor for letting him help.

Leaking hose looks like more of a PM thing. The rest however and the damage you showed in the YTshort is on them.
that smashed and bent bracket was shoved into the fitting causing it to loosen up, which was from neglect.
@@warrenmichael918 a bent bracket didn’t unscrew it
@@claytonwoolfe it sure did, look at where it was bent. It got pushed back and the corner of the bracket pushed against the nut on the line, it loosened it just enough so the pressure made it leak. 100%
How does Jeriah feel about being called a “man servant?”
He should be honored
You really don’t get that it’s a joke?
@@prague7706 I never thought it was. Where is the joke?
@@marte1a256 This comment you made is the joke. I think a few people called him that in an older video , so they laugh at it now by calling him that. Friends do that sort of thing.
Looks like it was leaking before you loaned it out.
You would think having a good relationship with your neighbor would be a priority since you think the world is going to end.
everyone needs a father like this
East coast man would have brought a 12 pack and tried to help you fix it
Whilst the grease nipple was careless operator error I am not sure you could blame the hose coming lose on him.
I can't imagine every bringing something I've borrowed in such poor condition. Speaks volumes to a man's character.
when can we expect a micro logging video? I enjoy seeing you work on the tiny forest.
@Charles White Haha that made me laugh.
@@stevev7760 youre the problem with the world. Jealous and envious.
@@stevev7760 Jesus, dude. Relax.
I’d let it go, but I’d also say “no” next time he asked to borrow it and I’d tell him exactly why.
Glad it was an easy fix!
You should never touch loose hydraulichoses like that when the machine is running. Very Dangerous. Anyways enjoyed the video!
Agreed! High pressure oil coming through a small crack can slice through body parts with ease.
One time my father let someone borrow a splitter with the instructions to be careful not to break the handle.
It came back with a new one.
How to tell your neighbor he F'd up , make a vid with a mil subscribers, PERFECT!
This goes for boats too. I can't count how many times, I heard of people loaning their boats to friends, neighbors, or relatives, only to get to get it back with an engine destroyed, because they didn't mix oil on the gas! Most boats used 2 stroke outboards back then.
That is why you offer to take your friends ON your boat but you never ever Loan it. They are delicate items.
That fitting has been leaking for a while!
I’d love to hear what your “friend” had to say about the condition of your excavator.
This is going to be a good one!
Snapon 4way wrenches would be really handy for this repair
A loose fitting and a broken grease zerk and you could possibly ruin a relationship over it? Disappointing.
Love ya..
It all seems to be protected, so how did it get damaged?
Cody that's you either do it for them or tell them to call a rental yard.
I rented a brand new Cat, same model; had 2.3 hrs on it. Same exact fitting was leaking. I think it's a common design error on that model. The current models quick coupler has been redesigned.
Love this content! Thanks and God bless!
Wish u would make more content like this.
Awesome lesson more please!
I think a man needs to maintain his equipment and not blame thy neighbor.
my dad always said to never trust a man who wears a denim apron
did you check that oring? if its oringface its common for loose fittings to tear up the oring.
More videos like this please. Live stream just isn't the same
i never imagined a neighbor taking apart a borrowed excavator to loosen a hose and then putting it all back together.... Golly!
The grease fitting might have been done, but the loose fitting hose connection is just a hick up.I would want to work on the connection myself just to make sure thats all it was.
East coast guys don't loan out they're CAT Equipment, nevermind blame someone else for something that's a common problem with hyd couplers, specially on mini excavators
What was the big zip tie for? I was kinda confused about that, as someone who has never used that kind of heavy equipment it seemed out of place! Love yer vids Cody!
most likely used to hold a hose or clamp in place when using the quick attach so it doesnt get pinched between it.
Hopefully this neighbor informed you on return of the issue, that's really something that just can't be missed when operating
WOW you made a VIDEO about this? I told you i was SORRY 10 times already!!!
That's really ironic he's like don't loan the equipment he'll come back broken but that could have just happened when you were using it too they didn't do anything negligent to have it come undone inside behind a plate
Did the borrower apologize for or even acknowledge what they did?
Everything is a blessing kind will come.
Cody, you should get out more often.
Cats got to do better with their hose routing for their quick connects !!!! Every one i have been on from a brand new 305.5 to a 352 have had hoses rub and bust or at least having to stop and tighten the fittings over and over again.... and i love cat equipment
Yes... the orange gloves are the best.
Protective glasses help keep greese out of your eyes. Experience taught me. My face shield works good too.
Even if the neighbor was a good friend, Cody still seems to be the kinda guy to have the neighbor show him the skills before letting em take the equipment
No one will treat your things with the same care and respect you will.
lemme guess, GrandDad had a little greaser port for that replacement huh? lol enjoy these kinds of videos. whether it be 5 minutes 10 minutes or even 15 minutes with a talk at the end. its always fun to join in the shop and learn a thing or two.
I really enjoy these shorter educational videos! You have a lot of knowledge and experience to share with us. Much appreciated from Canada!
If u own it...best be able to work on it...great job
