- For all you die hard David Bromberg fans & those of us old enough to remember Spiro T. Agnew, this is "Bullfrog Blues" from David Bromberg's 2nd album "How Late'll Ya Play 'Til?" This is from Vol. 1, which is the "recorded live" side. This video has everything BUT the kitchen sink & a gun thrown in! For those of you who have often requested this, Enjoy!
(p.s. I don't believe in violence against women...I am one...but this IS the blues!)
For a great short bio on Bromberg, please see the link below. It has info on his fine violin making artistry & local "artist in residence" status: www.davidbrombe...
A few years ago I saw the David Bromberg Quintet at the Ark in Ann Arbor, Michigan. They were amazing, as always. During a break, I yelled out, "Play Bullfrog Blues!" He searched me out in the audience and ordered me out of the room. Lol.
Huge fan of Bromberg & his amazing band. I saw them 3 times at a club called "My Fathers Place" in Roslyn L.I.N.Y. late 70's & 80's. As good or better live than their albums, which I owned many of. Severely underrated band.
I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR THIS SONG FOR 30 YEARS !!!!!
This was one of the first songs from Dave I ever heard. I was hooked. Funny enough, almost 30 years ago, I remember hearing an instrumental from Dave (I know he's done many) but this was a wicked solo blues with him bending the daylights out of the wound strings (2 step bends on an acoustic set of .013's is insane). He was really testifying, voice cracking, it was raw and beautiful. For the life of me I can't remember the name and don't have it on any of my albums or bootlegs. So I know EXACTLY how you feel 😂. If anybody knows the song I'm talking about and can help a brother out, I would be eternally grateful.
Listen to this track at least once a week for the last year. An amazing story teller and fantastic performer. Don't think I could ever get tired of David's brilliance.
He is one of my all time favorites! He doesn't get to my part of the country very often and visited here last fall. I was so happy to finally get to see him in person. I wasn't disappointed. He IS brilliant! Thanks so much for listening and taking the time to comment. I always am happy to meet a Bromberg fan. My best to you, Barbara
MyMoppet52 Thank you for posting this song on Utube. Lived no more then 5 miles from Philadelphia Penna for years, but I never saw him live, to late now. Have a playlist of his songs and albums on Rdio.com about 8 hours long. Great for days when your down because if David can't cheer you up Then you might as well give up.
Ray Massey
Oh, no. Wish you could've seen him. So glad to meet you. I have a sketchy memory, but just posted to you on Kilt's song. Thanks for listening to them. I adore David Bromberg. Plain and simple. I adore him and his music. Yes, he can make you smile...and you don't have a pulse if you don't. Thanks again and good to see you. I will remember you now, I hope. My best, Barbara

I wish we could post photos in the comments, I still have a pack of Spiro Agnew rolling papers !
Just heard him last night in Pittsburgh. He hasn't lost a thing! Still a master musician and performer and storyteller. It was a smallish club and the band had to walk out though the audience at the end and I came eye to eye with him and said, "Thank you so much!" and he looked me back and said, "Thank YOU, it was a real pleasure."
Nicholas Izzo WOW! What a nice comment. Thank YOU for sharing that. If the weather was better, I could have maybe made the concert ...if I made it a 2 day affair. Would love to see him in a small crowd. He was on my Bucket List & I got to see him last year. He doesn't get to my area ...hardly ever...so I'm thrilled I got to see him. He was brilliant, but let his group play more than I would have liked. It was not his regular stuff & he was showcasing his band's new individual cd's. What a great man...along with being a brilliant artist! Thank you so much. That is a memory that is rare! My best to you, Moppet

This used to actually get played, uncut, on K-101 in Houston when it came out in the '70s. I bought the album then but lost it over the years. Never forgot the "Zap comics with the pages stuck together". Thanks for putting this up. Just as funny now as I thought it was then.
greg raines You had a good station. (We did here back in the day, but they "sold out" 20+ years ago). So glad you found this. If you are a Bromberg fan, I have a Playlist called "David Bromberg" with some of my favorites of his. Wishing you a good day, Moppet
In hot lanta the DJ may just...play the whole fuckin thing......usually around midnite......far out.
I'm so glad you enjoyed this. I had a lot of requests & then utube wouldn't let me do it on one take. For some reason they finally let it go through. Thanks for leaving a comment. I love David Bromberg & am always happy to see when others enjoy him! My best to you, Moppet p.s. sorry to be so late, but I've been ill.
Its great seeing other people who enjoy Davids music as much as I do. When I lived back east I got to turn allot of people on to his music. Will Not Be Your Fool was the most popular song in my apartment. I got the pleasure of meeting him during a show in Cambridge in an old pup called Johnathon Swifts (I think that's where I got to meet him I caught as many shows as possible) I sat at a little table next to the stage and David said to me "Darrell move your beer" and as I did so he stepped from the stage onto my table and played a cool lead segment to one of the songs off the How Late Will You Play Till album. That was one of the most enjoyable moments of my life. Im so happy to see so much of his work on here and so many people enjoying it!
I have seen David live 20-25 times and have only heard him play this maybe twice ... but it is one of my favorite songs ... and he describes my college dorm book shelf of books almost exactly ... HaHa
Thanks for this. I'm going to see David tomorrow night in Kansas City and I am RUclips binging on David Bromberg tonight
+Norm Stevens I've only been able to see him once. It was as good as I expected. I'm a Bromberg freak. I know you will enjoy your concert! I have a Bromberg Playlist on my Channel if you want a list of his music to just run through. Have a great time!!!
I love this song I saw him live in Sydney six rows back from the stage he is an amazing musician and a great performer and you just have to sit back laugh your head off and have a great time
You are very welcome. I'm glad you found this. He brings back nice memories for me too. I once had a comment on my nostalgic music & thought..."that's what I listen to..." I smiled. Thanks for leaving a comment. I appreciate them very much. My best, Moppet
A classic, one-of-a-kind, comedic epic.
thanks for sharing this . I havent heard it in many years . I was lucky to have seen David perform a few times in th 70x when he came to canada . once at a festival and once at a concert hall .
ExPorted CapeR So glad you enjoyed this. I'd had a lot of requests for it & no one had it up at the time I made this. I've finally got to see him! Last year. He is amazing...
I've been looking for my Spiro T. Agnew Blues & can't find it. I also can't remember who sang it, but I loved the song. Thanks for listening & also for taking the time to comment. You got to see him when he was early into the music. Thanks, Moppet
splendid! best version of this song ever. this and his version of Mr. BoJangles--permanently etched in my mind. what a time.
You are very welcome. I had so much fun finding things to put in the video. It brought it ALL back to me...
Thanks so much for leaving a comment. I really do appreciate it when someone takes the time to do so. Bromberg is coming to my part of the country soon & I'm excited. Don't know if he's ever been here. Hope I can see him. Stop by anytime. (I have lots of Bromberg up & in the old format you could type in & see. Can't figure out the new format.) My best, Moppet
That Stromberg is a bitchin' tuner!
Dave played an amazing set today, June 22, 2014, at the Clearwater Revival. Can't wait to see him in Tarrytown in November!
So glad you got to see him. Jealous you are going to see him again. I had to wait forever to see him in Ohio. He doesn't get here often, but I finally got to see him last fall. (He was on my bucket list.) Thanks for taking the time to comment and for listening. I don't think he'd ever do a concert that wasn't amazing...but it's good to hear it was great! My best to you, Moppet
Love this song. It is one of the few that I have downloaded ......
One of my favorite performers from the south. Um.. New York, Philly, ah you know. Somewhere down there.
Tarrytown, NY.
Yes! Thanks so much for listening and leaving a comment. I have lots of Bromberg up & tagged him, but don't know how to work the new format. You used to be able to go to my Channel & type it into the right hand top. Anyway, hope you find lots of Bromberg whenever you want! My best, Moppet
This “was from David’s 2nd album”, ya say? Well, take it from this “die-hard” David fan, since the very beginning. This was his fifth album!!
Bullfrog Song is great. ! thanks...
You are very welcome. I've been out of touch for a while and am sorry this is so late. I hope I can get some other music up for you now. (I remember you). Hope all is well in your part of the country & wanted to let you know I appreciate you leaving a comment. My best, Moppet
Thank you so much. I had to do a Part 1 and Part 2 because I didn't have the right to make longer songs. I was given that for some reason, so I combined them. It took FOREVER for me to get it synched. I'm not too good at that. So glad you enjoyed this! Thanks for listening and taking the time to leave a message. If you like Bromberg, you can go to my Channel & type his name in the Search Channel area on top rt. You can see all the vids I have of him. Appreciate your visit very much, Moppet
Thank you so much ! I love this song !
I have tickets for David at the One World World Theater when he comes to Austin and can't wait.
i got all this shit on vinyl and my record player works spectacularly...it sucks to be old
tell me about it. just found out I need 2 knee replacements. I do love vinyl though and have great memories. Making new "great memories" every day though. Thanks so much for listening and leaving your comment. Always love to meet a Bromberg fan. My best to you, Moppet
Same as he ever was! Thank God. 🎸🐸
Lord I love him, ya just had to see him, then you would know.
deirdrea nienstedt He IS incredible & so many don't know him. He is a National Treasure & I don't say that lightly. He can play most anything with strings, writes, does all genres & does them to perfection...AND his little gleam in his eye is hard to resist, musically. Thanks so much for listening & commenting. I'm in the process of making a Bromberg Playlist on my Channel. I'm organizing & trying to make it easy for people to find what they want. My best to you, Moppet
I knew I wasn't the only one who knew his genius. Talk about talent, unsung man of music.
I heard Steve Goodman do this in January 1971, and I've never heard anyone else do it since. So I always thought this was original with Goodman. But this sounds very much like what I've been remembering for all those years since - except, of course, nobody else does "attitude" the way Bromberg does.
So now I'm wondering who got it from whom? Has anybody else here ever heard Goodman perform it?
+Mark R Steve Goodman was incredible. I miss him still...I miss Levon a lot also. Canned Heat did this in 67. (I had to look it up). I didn't get to hear Goodman do it. I just know David's version, but I'm going to look up Canned Heat's now. Thanks for asking, Moppet
+MyMoppet52 Actually, the week after I heard Goodman do it, I went to the record store looking for a recording of it, and the only recording of "Bullfrog Blues" I could find was the one by Canned Heat. But what they did was not a talking blues like I'd heard Goodman do or like Bromberg does here. It was a traditional blues, but done electric.
Do a RUclips search for "Bullfrog Blues" and listen to the 1928 William Harris version, then the 1967 one by Canned Heat, then Rory Gallagher (1980), then Nine Below Zero (1996). They're all the same blues song but done in different decades and progressively more rocked up.
None of them are the hilarious (and long!) talking blues / shaggy dog story that I heard Goodman do so many years ago, and that's in this Bromberg recording I just found on RUclips. The jokes in this talking blues are virtually the same as my recollection of Goodman's performance, and the references to stereo equipment are all from that era. (I owned a Garrard turntable with a Pickering cartridge back then. I also had all the Zap comics that had been published to date, although the pages in mine weren't stuck together. :-) )
I know from Clay Eals' biography of Steve Goodman that around that time Goodman was traveling around to festivals and concerts trying to get known, and learning all sorts of songs and techniques from other performers. Both he and Bromberg were doing the folk circuit at that same time. So it seems almost certain that one of them wrote it and the other learned it from him.
Mark R
thank you so much for your info. Goodman and Bromberg are both Masters, as far as I'm concerned. I never got to see Steve, but I still miss him. Again, I enjoyed reading your info. Thanks.
Rory recorded Bullfrog Blues on Live in Europe, released in 1972 - not 1980. It was the encore song on the album, which hit the Top 10, went gold, and Rory was Melody Maker's Guitarist/Musician of the Year - winning out over Eric Clapton. Bullfrog Blues is a song he usually performed in concert. This Bromberg's thing is not even a song, just 16 minutes of bs with the audience. zzzzzzzzzzz ...
Mark Tele David belongs to a unique American folk tradition that Rory Gallegher doesn't and can't fit into or should be compared to. Rory was a great Irish Rocker and guitarist, David is a great Folk Rock musician, song writer, instrumentalist, composer and performer... get it? I'd be willing to bet that Rory got it, but if you can't maybe you should stay in bed... zzzzzzzzzzzzzz...
I used to do this one when I needed to kill 20 minutes or so... amazing stuff!
The world might be full of despair and broken promises, but it is also full of brightly colored poisonous frogs! Have a great day!!
I'm a Bullfrog ....And I'm just thinkin'.............
And it's special hard....

1canyonguy Thanks for stopping by & giving David a listen. My best to you, Moppet
If you do enjoy David Bromberg, I put a Playlist together of some of my favorite music of his. It's on my Channel, under his name. I wasn't original in titling it. :)
Well, Mr. Ed, Thank you. I might synch ok, but I couldn't figure out why I didn't have any utube sound for months. Couldn't upload or listen. I wrote you...You have to turn the sound back on if the icon gets turned off. So, maybe you'd better rethink. :)
I'm back, Moppet
msmymoppet52,are you ok?
Kevin Thurston
Hello. I'm organizing my music. I had surgery on July 29 & it was a miracle! I was not ok for a long time. I wasn't around for a couple of years (with a few weeks activity scattered around in those years). I'm back. Thanks for asking. I appreciate it. Also thanks for listening to David. I'm organizing my Channel & it will take a few weeks, but there is an entire section for David. :))
Wishing you a very good 2015. Good to see you again, Moppet
+MyMoppet52 i hope you are doing weller and weller.still love david...still love you...
msmoppet, what the did you do to your knees?i'm sorry.hope they're good.
Sorry to be so long in getting back to you, but I'm falling apart all over the place. Bad genes is basically it. I started with problems in my early 30's so I guess I'm lucky to have held together this long. I have no knees basically. I need both replaced. That's just one health issue. Wish it was the only one. Thanks for your concern...and for listening! The computer keeps me tied to the world. My best to you, Barbara
MyMoppet52
good luck.hope you have good insurance?
It's really great, but personally got to give the award for the best version to Rory Gallagher. ;)
Devil's Duck , apples and oranges, man.
"How Late'll Ya Play 'Til?" was his fifth album, not second. On the original vinyl, the second disc is the live disc, first is studio. I enjoyed this album except for the content about violence against women and the homophobic slur.
"Your toes to cupcakes"......
Got me through my first divorce along with "will not be your fool"....
DB doenst get much better than this
Spiro! Nattering Nabobs of Negetivism! I still got my impeach nixon button!
not really
I think Hugh Hefner is a schmuck too- Classic blues- my woman done me wrong stuff
Harmful post. Bromberg spends all this time artfully distracting you from the bullfrog theme so he can throw it back and shock you with it's forgotten familiarity. The visuals keep reminding bullfrogs and destroy the song. In MY opinion.
I just listened to David Bromberg for the first time, the entire 2 record set, "How Late'll Ya Play 'Til?" I was impressed with the versatility and talent of him and his band, until I came across the violent portions and emphasized homophobic slur. I am also a vegan who empathizes with what you mean about the bullfrog concept. Have a nice day.
