I agree with you to a degree and also think England played well, but when I see a lower order NZ batsman trying ( one would hope ) to save a test match being caught playing a ramp shot, it tells me that either they do not understand what playing a test really means or they just want to go home. Appalling.

From an English perspective... you don't whitewash India if your bad team. You should have won the 1st test other than an absolutely crazy day of dropped catches. The second test was a horrendous performance but in fairness some of the deliveries the batters got were absolute jaffers. You have to give credit to Carse woakes and Atkinson they were so good and bowled as unit. Some of the seam movement from a perfect line and length would have given any batting lineup issues.
I think you lost it with your pacers I don't think they hit their areas enough on pitches that were absolutely in favour of seam bowling

I'm an England fan, came over for both games. Glad England won but wanted a contest. The Kiwi batting in this test was weak as piss, Williamson was got out twice by quality balls in fairness. Ravindra three weak dismissals in four innings, you could see the rain coming and there would be one more over even without rain and he has a waft. Conway looks shot in tests, huge gap between bat and pad in the second innings. Latham doesn't look like the player he was.
Had hoped the Blackcaps would make 400+ in the fourth innings, just to show some fight, but it was all too easy for England.

Phillips should be batting at 6. Conway needs to go back to Wellington and play 4 day cricket and find some form. Southee should have been "retired" before the Aussie test series. We can't carry a bowler who gets a wicket at a cost of 63 runs

Couldn’t agree more! It’s absolutely unacceptable. To go from 3-0 in India (almost unprecedented) to this. As you say, there seems to be no accountability or explanation. Feels like the Warriors all over again. That series in India is basically negated now, and that is a major shame. Even if we win big in the last test or even the next series, who cares! We know that it will be just followed by another disaster. Is it a cultural issue or what in NZ? It’s mind-blowing.

Isn’t it interesting with Kane Williamson back in the side it all goes pear shaped as if the remaining players rest on their laurels subconsciously…. Take him out of the team and it’s like they wake up and think I better pull my finger out…. But fundamentally like the earlier comment said , the up-and-down nature is a result of our relatively small pool of players plays its part in this inconsistency.

Don't blame the bowlers; I've been watching the Bazball rollercoaster from the beginning, 5 per over is par. The question is how many wickets they get.
I was hoping for a close series, sadly not to be. Also, Harry Brook may be the best English batsman of all time - he averages over 60 and scores faster than Sehwag. No-one has ever done that. Dropping him all those times in the first game was disastrous.

  • @colinlambert882
    @colinlambert882 3 дня назад +1

Too harsh on the Black caps? The first difference was Harry Brook's world-class innings. He had a plan to attack the NZ fast bowlers, which he executed to perfection. Up to then NZ was running through England on a helpful pitch and 200 might have been a good score. Don't underestimate England’s bowlers, Atkinson and his captain, ensured quick ends to both innings. But Essentially, England had a winning position by stumps on day1, which NZ could never challenge. England have their own Devon Conway issue: Zak Crawley out to Henry 4 times for 0 runs!

I suspect the problem is very much about mindset. Bazball isn't just about going out and "giving it a wack". The traditional mindset in cricket has always been that the 1st priority is not to lose. We can all remember teams turning down a 320 run chase, because the risk was to high. The England's mind set is that are looking to win and will risk losing to make that possible. On our last tour, down here, we lost when we declared and set NZ a total to chase. As it happened they got home. Australia would have kept on batting until they couldn't lose, even if it meant there wasn't enough time to bowl the opposition out.
Accepting that failure is a normal part of the process, as long as you fail doing what you set out to do, is key.
The Pakistani team was so disturbed by it that we then got to heavily doctored pitches, as a response.

    • @user-bh4gw7ck4d

The issue I have with stokes and mccullum is that we don't know when to say right let's just dig in here because we're not gonna be able to play gung ho cricket on rank turner's. We were excellent in the second test but lucky in the first. We're certainly not going to challenge India and Australia in the championship in the next few years playing how we do currently.

Hmmm; I think you have overegged your criticism of the kiwi players. Some dismissals have been stupid, yes, and Conway needs to be 'rested', but the conditions and the English bowling has been challenging. The seam movement obtained by both sides with the new ball was often prodigious and if you are not proactive about dealing with it, it most likely will get you out and the only player with a sensible approach in the kiwi side was Blundell, in the 2nd innings when he batted out of his crease. Just playing orthodoxly, as Kane did, is a recipe for death. The English batsmen played unorthodoxly and resultantly, some succeeded in getting runs on the board and one failing of the kiwi bowlers was that they didn't respond intelligently by bowling yorkers, slower balls or cutters to throw them off. The bowling coach is at fault here methinks. As for it to "be better to try to grind out a 50 off 250 balls" on a greentop with prodigious seam movement than smack a run-a-ball ton as Blundell did, the best-ot-the-best at that, Kane, showed that was definitely not on the cards at all by only getting modest scores. In those conditions it would be better to die by the sword for a quick 40 than by a nasty seamer for 10 off 30. Even better to bat 2 steps out of your crease and negate some of the movement. Latham and Conway were in surrender mode by day 3 and some serious changes are needed to get the team into fighting mode for Seddon park, like a proper spinner in the team, much better tactics, and a specialist opener like Mariu fronting up. Conway is a 5.

Australia showed how to beat England, they let England play their Bazball style and Australia played in more traditional a slower scoring way. NZ have to play to thier strengths and play too the conditions.
NZ have other problems like Conway he needs to be replace as he is a walking wicket can't play the ball that come back in at him. Also they don't seam to have plans for ever English batsman to try and expose their weaknesses to try and get their wicket while they are not set at the crease. I am not sure what NZ have in terms of strength in depth, have you got young batsman and bowlers that can be given a chance if the current crop of NZ players are under performing, knowing that you could be replaced if you don't perform is a great motivator.

Australia didn’t win, they retained the ashes at 2-2. They had already virtually lost in the other match at Old Trafford it rained constantly. England scored 592, Australia’s score total was 531 with 5 wickets down in their 2nd innings with a day and a half still to go.

Yeah agreed Australia more survived rather than found a winning formula and method of beating bazball had old Trafford not become saturated for 2 days we'd be talking about Australia being rabbits in the headlights for me forget Cummins or starc next winter the bowler all Aussies need to pray stays fit for 5 tests is Nathan Lyon because he is irreplaceable England dominated all 3 tests after his injury last ashes but to suggest that Australia found a way of tethering England is a tad economic with the truth the truth of it all is Cummins as captain became more frazzled as the tests rolled on and without Lyon Australia looked powerless to do anything about England tipified by the 598 that got scored at more than 5 runs an over in the penultimate test the biggest shellacking I've seen an Aussie attack take since 2010/11 ashes series so I have to disagree that the way to beat England is to bunker down and fight through it I think you have marry attack with defence but always be looking to score runs and with the ball be willing to experiment and adapt quickly to match England's cunningness and aggression with the bat that to me is how you beat England that or play in a low slow raging Turner
