To be honest, the way I teach by way of the RUclips channel & with the "sentence strips" is due to the fact that I'm mildly dyslexic & I learn differently then others. I struggle with written patterns, recipes, and books. The cards help me process!
I guess I just assume others learn the same way! Soooo, I do it as much for ME as for others! My "cheat sheet" for both crochet & weaving came about to help me learn this art years & years ago! Never dreamed others would appreciate them too!

I'm not totally sure I understand your question "under both pieces of the warp", so bear with me okay?
As you are moving right to left on your project, "Right over Left & under the (1) warp" & continue across the row. Once you reach the other side & are moving left to right, "Left over Right & under the (1) warp".

I've learned a lot from your videos and return to them often for hints as I get more into twine weaving. One problem I've encountered is fabric fraying. My project looks like a bunch of loose threads. Your finished product looks so clean and neat. Do you have any tips that work for you in either preventing or dealing with fraying?
Hello, Rebecca! So happy you reached out!
Several things come to mind! The first is the type of fabric you might be using. Some fabrics just fray more than others.
Second, are you tearing vs. cutting your fabric (with shears, rotary cutter, or commercial cutter)? Tearing has a tendency to have more threads. You might consider cutting your fabric instead since the threads are an issue for you. (I'll attach a video link on different ways to cut your fabric that might be helpful to you)
Third: Straight cut vs. Bias cut. Straight Cut - cutting with or against the grain - has a tendency to have more threads then BIAS cut which virtually has NO threads. You can cut your fabric on the bias to eliminate the threads!!
I'm very "biased" I know, but we sell fabric rolls that are bias-cut. 16 different colors to choose from & the rolls are 100% cotton, bias cut (no threads!), 2" wide & 6 yards on every roll. They are SO awesome! Here's a link! >> www.ragstorugs-bylora.com/ (Click on "Fabric!")

She is twining with batik fabric. It doesn't fray at all. Very pretty, but can be expensive.
these instructions were for a placemat. When making a rug would you use two nails for each warp or still use each nail separate?

What is the reason for switching top and bottom, and not just twining the whole way down? Thanks!
Hello! Great question! Primarily it is to control tension - a very important part of twine weaving! By flipping your frame you ease the tension that would build if you were to continue weaving to the opposite end.
Secondarily, by allowing the final rows in the middle of your rug, it is much easier to finish off your rug there than at an end adjacent to the boards & nails. Very hard to work your fabric on an end as opposed to near the middle.
And last, by doing so helps with a pattern you might be following. Establishing your pattern on one end, repeating on the opposite end & then continuing through the body of your rug. If you were to run short of fabric, you can modify the pattern accordingly.
I normally recommend 1/3 & flip your work, 1/3 flip your work, 1/3 complete your work, for your rug & placemat projects.

The cool thing about rug-making is that we are artists & "painting with fabric"! I like to think that anyway?! I design as I go; there isn't a pattern. So it's difficult for me to share how to "do a pattern". I change colors when the overall beauty of my rug "asks" me to. Does that make sense? I hope so because your question is important to me!!
Is there any benefit to making a frame loom this rather than a peg loom? I am curious mostly because of being space-conscious. Thanks!
Hello! Peg Looms come in a variety of sizes & are considered perhaps the easiest of all forms of weaving to learn. Peg looms also come in 2 styles. One type is simply one row of pegs which doesn't take up much space at all. A second type is the type we used to make potholders on as children - with pegs on all 4 sides.
Twine Weaving frames also come in a variety of sizes & are also easy to learn but unlike the peg looms that are more of a pulling your fabric through, twine weaving is much like braiding hair using a twisting technique & considered far more durable a weave.
As far as space concerns, I would have to yield to the size of rug you anticipate weaving. If a potholder or a placemat is what you dream of making, either type would be appropriate. If you desire making a larger rug - like a 24x36" size perhaps, a twine woven rug frame would be more appropriate.
You might also consider a placemat frame to create larger rugs if space is a concern. As an example, 2 of our placemats layed end-to-end is the same size as our tablerunner. 4 placemats is the same size as our deluxe rug. I once wove a larger rug for a customer's "man cave" by weaving 4 deluxe rugs & then cross-stitching the 4 panels together with leather lacing (like shoe laces). He was absolutely thrilled with the outcome!
All could easily be slipped under a bed or couch when you're not working on them. And I love to travel with my twine weaving frames. I simply rest them on the floor of my car & twine away! There is no pattern so stopping & starting is very easy. Just start back up where you left off.
I prefer this type of twine weaving frame over most others particularly adjustable frames.
Adjustable frames are often MUCH larger. And take up a lot of space in our homes. They offer the ability to create a desired size of rug which is a plus. However, if you want to weave a small placemat as an example, on a large adjustable frame, space becomes a concern.
Adjustable frames are also not as easily portable. Our frames can easily slide under a couch or bed when not in use. And, I like to travel with my frames. It's easy to travel & work on the placemat & tablerunner frame by simply resting them on the floorboards of my car. Not so with the adjustable frames.

Great question! A safety pin is often used but a crochet hook or latch hook are other really good options!

I'm a newbie. Made my first rug and not pleased. It bulges at the top down about half way. How can I keep it from bulging. And how to keep my weaving straight.?

Your voice fades out as you move, and I have trouble understanding, especially as you turn away from the microphone. I really wish you would have light colored warps that contrast with the fabric straps. That will help us see your twining at the beginning and end of each row. I would find it helpful if you would zoom in on key steps, too. After all that, I really appreciate your instructions. It is obvi I s you are an experienced professional. Thank you.

these instructions are for a placemat. If you were twinning a rug would you use two nails for each warp instead of one?
Are both strands of each warp woven as a single or double. In other words, you go under both strand of the warp?

Curious, are twined placemats too thick?
Hello! Absolutely not! I have in my home at least 20 placemats that I not only use at my dinner table, but I also sprinkle them around my home on buffets, side tables & vanities!
Because twine weaving produces a tighter stitch (as opposed to crocheted placemats) they work wonderfully for our placemats preventing stemware toppling! Crocheted placemats I normally recommend a "P" hook as opposed to a "Q" hook to achieve a denser, tighter stitch.
Often I will lay (2) twine woven placemats end-to-end to achieve the exact same size as our TableRunner frames! You can't tell that they are two separate rugs!
For fun, I will set my table with 6 different placemats & another 2 similar placemats end-to-end for the centerpiece!

what do you use to cut your strips ?
Hello!! That's a really good question! In Rags to Rugs we cut a LOT of fabric for our custom rug orders as well as to fill orders! So we use a commercial cutter. On smaller rug projects we use a rotary cutter & mat.

What does she mean by "bias cut?"
Hello! Bias cut fabric is fabric that is cut diagonally or 45 degrees across the grain as opposed to cutting with the grain. The advantage to bias cut fabric is that will be no threads on the edges which many consider to be a real plus!

Hello, Kevin! I love this question! I actually giggled a little reading it!
Twining is a process of interlacing or INTER-TWINING strands to make a woven pattern. Over the years inter-twining was shorted to twining!
Twining is often mistaken for simple weaving, but the process is very different. Twining involves twisting two fabric strands (weft) around each other to enclose vertical fabric strands (warp). This twisting method resembles braiding & is as easy! The technique produces a very durable rug!
