What a meal. Genius! But nothing better than Pete’s obvious gratitude to the Lord prior to eating. - Love it!!! The message is getting through as I hoped and prayed it would
Thank you for finally recognizing the importance of freedom in our daily lives. The biggest draw we have when overlanding is the sense of freedom we obtain when finding that isolated location where the only laws are wilderness survival. We love your videos
@@EFRT And as Thomas Jefferson said "I prefer dangerous freedom over peaceful slavery". We love you guys - there is a great little rec site near Port Alice called Marble River I think.
I am so grateful for finding your channel. My daughter lives in BC and I have never been. I'm living on a small pension so she always travels to me. My daughter always raves about the beauty and takes photos for me but nothing beats traveling through it with the family. I live in Northern Ontario and Ontario is no slouch when it comes to lovely places but it's different. You seem to be very decent people that I would be proud to know. Thank you.
It's a PBY Catalina. It was a flying boat and my late father-in-law flew in them during WW2 while serving in an Air/Sea Rescue Unit. Thanks for sharing the adventure!
Your videos are one of the highlights of my Sunday evenings. It’s always awesome when you show you guys saying grace before meals. Thanks for taking us along on your trips.
Thank you Mr. Stralen for your remarks regarding freedom, how precious it is, and how it is worth fighting for. And Caroline, your camera work on this episode was awesome. From the amount of out-of-Jeep shots, I’m guessing you walked quite a bit. Nice work!
Agreed, freedom is very precious. Glad you enjoyed the video. Yes, Caroline ended up doing a lot of walking on this trail to get the shots. Hope you have a wonderful day.
This is by far some of the best videos on RUclips. I have just binge watched the last seven months and WOW. Now I will start from the beginning and then wait till next week.
“A fortunate life” Is my recommendation. This was a book I read on quiet nights in the workshop when I was an engineer for a printing company. It got me in the frame of mind for adventure. Born in 1894, Albert Facey lived the rough frontier life of a sheep farmer, survived the gore of Gallipoli, raised a family through the Depression, and spent 60 years with his beloved wife, Evelyn. Despite enduring hardships we can barely imagine today, Facey always saw his life as a "fortunate" one. A true classic of Australian literature, his simply written autobiography is an inspiration. It is the story of a life lived to the full--the extraordinary journey of an ordinary man.
I read Thor Heyerdahl's book, Kon Tiki, while a junior in high school and that had to be 1963 or 1964. It was so good and intriguing I read it in a weekend. On Monday, I turned in a book report and got an A on it. Wow, I am getting old. My wife is a prolific reader and she's always recommending books to me. She'll read four or five books to my one in a week's time. I love to document my adventures and write reviews on gear I've purchased. I write in those Composition books I pick up at Walmart. I like to take notes as I watch You Tube videos like yours and hopefully one day I'll be able to travel to those recommended areas. While serving in the military 23 years, I spent 16 of them overseas, mostly in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. My favorite country is Switzerland. Backpacking and skiing in the Alps was phenomenal. My wife and I would love to return to Maui, my home, but this current situation is preventing our accomplishing it. Your adventures have really helped us "survive" the stress of this awful year, between the pandemic and the political atmosphere. We're living vicariously through your adventures. So, thank you and your family for that. Happy Holidays and be safe.
That’s wonderful, I hope to become more prolific with my reading. There are just so many good books to read! Switzerland looks like such a beautiful country and I definitely hope to go there one day. I have friends there that will be able to show us around their beautiful homeland. I do hope you and your wife are able to make it back to Maui and will be praying everything works out for that to happen soon! Thank you for following along with our videos and thank you very much for your service. Merry Christmas! - Caroline
"The epic family". You guys always make my day. I really enjoy watching your adventures. Now I also wanna own a Jeep and go camping 1 day. Truly inspiring ❣️
Great video! I read Endurance on my solo sailing trip to Alaska a few years ago. While sailing my 37’ sloop in the Tracy Arm with its house size ice floating in the strong current made the read much more meaningful. Trying to push to the foot of the calving glacier was impossible due to the heavier ice pack gave you a sense of what Shackleton and his crew experienced. Another book I read on this trip was “The Secret Voyage of Sir Francis Drake” by Samual Bawlf. About a voyage up the west coast in search of the west entrance to the Northwest Passage, the voyage that was kept secret for 200 years. My Alaska trip was to be a shake down before sailing to the South Pacific with my late wife. The 6 month trip was a success, however, sailing without my sailing partner of 32 years was not as enjoyable. I have since, sold my boat, the condo, moved to Alberta where I have taken up over landing with my Toyota diesel Hilux and pursuing my photography and adventure. Keep up the great videos and adventures, maybe see you on a trail someday.
Wow that’s sounds like quite the adventure! I will definitely check out Samual Bawlf’s book, thank you for the recommendation. For sure, that would be great to meet on the trail one day. Good luck with your adventures and happy trails! - Caroline

Beautiful! Like always! Loved the hiking part! That’s right up my alley! lol The rainforest up there reminds me of northern Minnesota in the summertime 🙌🏼 ...and Pete needs a haircut! lol
Those saws are amazing. I bought one on your recommendation and use it every time we are out. (Including yesterday). Vancouver island is beautiful. I’ve been there twice for extended times with the military but never got to see it like you are.
If you want to discover more of the west coast head down the road to Salmon Beach Toquart Bay, there are lots of interesting off road sites and two Recreational villages. You may even stumble upon the hermit castle farm. Great episode as always.
Endurance is my favorite. Hard to understand the strength of character they had. If you like maritime stories, I enjoyed Joshua Slocum’s book Sailing Alone Around the World about his trip in a 36 ft sailboat in the late 1800s. Love you channel!

1:00 "We get a lot of rain here" that is the understatement of the century.. Vancouver Island, is one of the wettest places in North American. A lovely little place called HENDERSON LAKE (google it) is the Wettest place in North America, and situated not far from Tofino. 1:27 Radar hill had nothing to do with the attack on Pearl Harbour, it was commissioned 2 years after the attack in 1943 and it was intended as a Cold War installment, against the USSR, not the Japanese. it closed in 1951, and reopened in 1958 as the Tofino Airport. The Site of Radar hill is the site of the Tofino Canso bomber crash On 8 February 1945, Consolidated Canso 11007 was departing RCAF Station Tofino on a routine night anti-submarine patrol of the coastline having been cleared for take-off at 2300 hours and had just passed the end of the runway when the port engine failed. The flight carried 12 personnel, 620 imp gal (2,800 l) of fuel and four 255 lb (116 kg) depth charges. While failing to gain altitude over a forested area the pilot attempted a 180-degree turn to return to the airfield, and impacted the side of a low hill. All on board survived with only minor injuries. Later, the RCAF retrieved all salvageable equipment including radios, radar equipment and machine guns, and detonated the depth charges, leaving a crater. The wreck is in a relatively easy to access location in National Park land (which precludes salvage) close to roads and is a popular destination for hikers despite most of the area being swampy.
Two book to recommend. Dove by Robin L. Graham. 16 year old solo sail around the world in a 24 foot sloop. And The High Adventure of Eric Ryback. Solo hiked the Pacific Crest Trail from Canada to Mexico.
“Endurance” is one of my favorite books, about The Shackleton South Pole Expedition... Ernst Shackleton was a true leader of men, and an intrepid explorer.
Beautiful country side and a great track . Liked the book review also .love reading about any adventure traveling style books . so thanks will check them out sound like some awesome books . Love your videos . Cheers from Steve Stott in Sutherlin Oregon U.S.A.
Excellent Video as usual, Im amazed that your pet has so much energy, he keeps running for such a long distance... @17:50, We call it Tawa, several centuries old kitchen Utensil in India. Every single kitchen in the country will sure have at least one. Now the modern day ones are every were, but the old cast iron ones will give the right flavor.
Yes, Lando has a lot of energy and can pretty much run all day if he has the chance. We didn’t realize that the Skottle / Tawa is also used in India. Thanks for sharing. 🇮🇳 🥘
There is a cool campsite on Malcolm Island, a short ferry ride from Port McNeil. Bere Point. Whales and other marine life can often be seen around there.
Caroline - if you like sailing books, I recommend 2 from Christian Williams: Alone Together, and Philosophy of Sailing. He has a RUclips channel where you can sample each and even see a 30-min summary video. It is not action/adventure type, but it’ll take you deeper into sailing and what it must be like on a long transoceanic journey. You’re a bright young lady and a great role model I’d like my daughters to learn from. Stay true to your internal compass and close to your wonderful family as you grow up and explore this crazy world.
Thank you very much! I will definitely read those two and check out Christian William’s RUclips channel. 👍🏼😍 I have always loved the ocean and dreamed of sailing one day so I will love to read those 👌🏼 - Caroline
I saw you driving through my town of Parksville today!!! Got a little excited and would really have liked to meet you but unfortunately could not get off the highway on time. We love your videos. My husband and I have a roof top tent and love it. Gave up our 30 foot trailer in our 60's and went with a roof top. Planned to travel across Canada this past summer but was cancelled due to the state of the world. Hopefully next year. Keeps us young we say. Two summers ago we did drive all the way to Dawson City. Great trip. One thing we would ask when you do your videos if you could say where you are at the beginning. Nice to know what areas you are talking about. We admire you for doing what you are doing. Hopefully see you on the road one day. Cheers and Merry Christmas
Hi there. You guys sound like a very adventurous couple. Hopefully things will get back to normal and you can do your cross-country trip next summer. Great idea about saying where we are exploring at the beginning of the video. A very merry Christmas to you too! We’ll see you down the road. 👍🏻
Dooope! (Homer). I see you’ve read about Shackleton... Here’s another very interesting book. ‘The Autobiography of Buffalo Bill Cody.’ He was quite the adventurer, entrepreneur, showman, and storyteller... enjoy.
What a great family you have. Talking about freedom and I detected a prayer just before you ate. I would like to recommend Andrew St. Pierre White's book, Torn Trousers.
May I recommend 'An Unexpected Light' by Jason Elliot. An extraordinary tale of travel in Afghanistan which did more to explain the mysteries of the Middle East to me than anything else I have read. On the sailing front ( I live on a boat) Voyaging the Pacific by Miles Hordern is a terrific account of a single handed sailor in a 28 foot boat crossing the Southern Ocean from New Zealand to Chile and back again. Tania Aebi was just 16 when she set off, alone, to sail around the world. Her book 'Maiden Voyage' is another good read about sailing.
That sounds really fascinating, I will definitely read ‘An Unexpected Light’! Wow, ‘Voyaging The Pacific’ sounds like an epic book, I’ll definitely check that one out as well. I remember reading about Tania Abei and I definitely plan to read her book as well. - Caroline
I would recommend King of the Outback by Bill King who really pioneered travel in Australia's outback. From the back cover of the book "Billg King is the pioneer who put the Australia outback on the map for both local and international tourists"..
A must read and one of my top 5 books that I think you all would enjoy is Astoria by Peter Stark. “Unfolding over the course of three years, from 1810 to 1813, Astoria is a tale of high adventure and incredible hardship in the wilderness and at sea. Of the more than one hundred-forty members of the two advance parties that reached the West Coast-one crossing the Rockies, the other rounding Cape Horn-nearly half perished by violence. Others went mad. Within one year, the expedition successfully established Fort Astoria, a trading post on the Columbia River. Though the colony would be short-lived, it opened provincial American eyes to the potential of the Western coast and its founders helped blaze the Oregon Trail.”
Hello. Could you tell us the model of that wood cutting saw you use to clear the trail of those downed trees. I like the fact if was collapsible and seem to have aggressive teeth. Keep the great adventure going..
Loved the book recommendations! Mine is Undaunted Courage by Stephen R. Ambrose. It’s about Lewis and Clark’s epic journey exploring the west all the way to the mouth of the Columbia River. Makes the history of the Pacific Northwest come alive too. So next time you’re heading south from Torino...
We definitely hope to drive the Jeeps to beautiful Chile one day and Chilean Patagonia 🏔 I definitely will read some books on Carretera Austral and Torres del Paine, it looks so beautiful there!! My cousin-in-law is from Chile and he hopes to show us around there one day.
Thank you for the book recommendations. It’s what gets our minds wandering when we cannot physically. You might really enjoy “Wild Survival” by Laurence Gonzales about who survive and who don’t in extreme situations. “The Dove” by Robin Lee Graham, Maiden Voyage by Tania Albi and Embarrassment of Mangoes by Ann Vanderfoot are all great sailing reads.
Great episode! A good suggestion of an adventurer book is Mark Boyle's The Way Home: Tales from a Life Without Technology. Strongly recommend this novel if you want a similar experience.
It's always a pleasure to be able to travel with you on the trails. Very inspiring. Especially since I'm stuck in my home office teleworking. I love your videos, the beauty of the images and the calm that emanates from it. (I like the fact that the music is subtle and not too intrusive). By the way, is there a meaning or a story behind the names of your jeeps?
Thank you so much and thank you for watching! Yes, our original Jeep, the ice-blue one is called ‘Vandi’ which means “One who travels” in Dutch since our dad’s family is from The Netherlands. The white Jeep is called ‘Worsley’ which is named after Captain Frank Worsley of Sir. Ernest Shackleton’s Trans-Antarctic Expedition from 1914-1916 where they attempted to make the first land crossing of the Antarctic Continent. The story of Shackleton’s expedition has inspired us since we first read the book as kids and Captain Worsley’s leadership, bravery and skills in navigation are what made us want to name our Jeep after him. - Caroline
Great recommendation Christoff, especially as they also refer to the South African skottel in this episode. Keep up the good work, your content is inspiring. And read that book, hopefully we will see you in Southern Africa at some point.
I definitely will add this to my reading list! Thank you for the recommendation. 👍🏼 I can’t wait for our dream of coming to Africa to become a reality some day soon, reading about it always just makes me more excited. South Africa has always fascinated me and I can’t wait to truly see and experience it. - Caroline
Hi Caroline, if you liked Kon Tiki, then you might like The Brendan Voyage by Tim Severin. similar toThor Heyerdahl, Tim sets out to prove that something could have occured, in this case, he wanted to prove that the monk St Brendan could have crossed to the Americas before the Vikings did! And in a leather boat made of 48 Ox hides. Recomended.
Hello Roger, thank you for the recommendation, I will definitely add it to my reading list! I read a bit about the monk St Brendan’s voyage in an old book published in 1930 called “The World’s Great Adventure - 1,000 Years of Polar Exploration” By, Francis Trevelyan Miller. It was very fascinating to read so I would love to read Tim Severin’s book! - Caroline
Thanks for showing honor and respect for our warriors that fought against the expansion of the communist totalitarian regimes. Our current generations have to step up to do our parts now.

The Site of Radar hill is the site of the Tofino Canso bomber crash
On 8 February 1945, Consolidated Canso 11007 was departing RCAF Station Tofino on a routine night anti-submarine patrol of the coastline having been cleared for take-off at 2300 hours and had just passed the end of the runway when the port engine failed.
Thanks 👍🏻
Keep up the awesome videos. Love your channel.👍👍
Thank you! 👍🏼
Two book to recommend. Dove by Robin L. Graham. 16 year old solo sail around the world in a 24 foot sloop. And The High Adventure of Eric Ryback. Solo hiked the Pacific Crest Trail from Canada to Mexico.
Thank you for your great recommendations! I will definitely check these out.

God bless.. mother Nature...👍
Thats an absolute miracle the people on that plane survived
Awesome. Thanks for the tip 👍🏻
We all need to Fight for FREEDOM, I like that but sadly a lot of people don't get it but there's Hope. We need more people like you Thanks!
Thanks for your comment. Yes, freedom can never be taken for granted. Hope you have a wonderful day.
Saludos a todos , me encanta su familia y sus aventuras. Dios los bendiga y proteja siempre. Sus expediciones son increíbles.
Thank you Alexander!!
God bless
Tofino... been salmon fishing there. Interesting history on the Korean War... great video.
Great video as always. Nice to see you using the skottel and yes it is very popular over here in South Africa.
I have always loved the ocean and dreamed of sailing one day so I will love to read those 👌🏼

Thank you!
‘The Autobiography of Buffalo Bill Cody.’ He was quite the adventurer, entrepreneur, showman, and storyteller... enjoy.
Thank you for the recommendation! We’ll definitely check it out 👍🏼

Caroline has a good collection of books, I loved her part in the video. would like to read some during the holidays. cheers!!!
Thank you! 👍😊
Cheers!
What a great family you have. Talking about freedom and I detected a prayer just before you ate. I would like to recommend Andrew St. Pierre White's book, Torn Trousers.
We’re glad you’re enjoying our videos. Thanks for the book recommendation we’ll definitely check that out. Have a wonderful day.

I would recommend King of the Outback by Bill King who really pioneered travel in Australia's outback. From the back cover of the book "Billg King is the pioneer who put the Australia outback on the map for both local and international tourists"..
Thank you for your recommendation! That sounds really interesting.

Really enjoyed the book recommendations and another great episode 👍
Thank you Carolyn. I was wondering what the significance of the names of your Jeeps at the beginning of the video! Enjoy your family immensely
Wow that sounds like a fascinating book! Thank you for your recommendation.

Hello. Could you tell us the model of that wood cutting saw you use to clear the trail of those downed trees. I like the fact if was collapsible and seem to have aggressive teeth. Keep the great adventure going..

Coincidence we were in Tofino at the same, taking in some beach therapy, and doing some poking around on the backroads...
Hello my favourite family of RUclips.
Hello! 👋
Thank you for watching 😄
Being Canadian, you might enjoy “Epic Wanderer, David Thompson & the Mapping of the Canadian West” by D’Arcy Jenish.
Yes, I definitely will read this!
Thank you for your recommendation👍🏼

That is a Catalina PBY. My dad flew those in WW II. Generally used for sub patrol.
Definitely a PBY.
Thank you for the recommendation!
I will definitely read ‘Undaunted Courage’ it sounds very interesting!

20:33 yes it made me hungry!! and it smells nice too :)
Good suggestions on books! And...what was the chicken meal you made on skottle? Recipe? Love your videos! Come to Arizona someday!
Caribbean Jerk Chicken 🍗 👍🏻
Beautiful landscape . You should visit Chilean Patagonia. Read or search something about “Carretera Austral” or “Torres del Paine”.
I’ve added these all to my reading list. Thank you so much for your recommendations, they all look really good. 👍🏼

Thats who Worsley is.Sure has great lights.
Great episode! A good suggestion of an adventurer book is Mark Boyle's The Way Home: Tales from a Life Without Technology. Strongly recommend this novel if you want a similar experience.
Thank you for the recommendation, that books sounds really interesting 👍🏼

Great ep as usual! Try “Cry of the Kalahari” by Mark and Delia Owens. Great book for your Southern Africa trip 😉

You’re welcome and yes we agree we definitely need to do our part. Have a wonderful day.
Thanks for the book ideas. I would like to suggest the book "Who needs a road?" By Harold Stephens and Albert Podell. Fantastic read about 2 guys driving a land cruiser around the world.
