If you explain, they understand. My cat, the one the vet labeled a 'devil cat' because of the injuries she caused there, had no issues with meds from me. The last year or more of her life, I needed to do wound dressing every day, with cleaning/draining the wound. Not exactly pleasant.
I would call her for the dressing change, and she'd run right up, smiling and purring. She let me do it every single day, never hid or fussed. She got treats afterwards, but she also got lots of love and grooming (which she couldn't do anymore for herself). She knew it wasn't gonna be great, but she also knew I was taking care of her.
Same with my other cat, who needed to be given water by oral syringe every night the last few years of her life. She hated it, but she always ran up to get it over with, because she trusted us when we said she needed the water.
If they trust in you, and you explain the what and why, most animals will understand.

@@allisonjames2923 I don't know. My dog is old and has arthritis and inflammation. I think that when he hangs around the entrance to the kitchen (which is where he usually gets his pain meds), rather than going into the kitchen proper, that he is "asking" for his pain relief medication even if he doesn't like the taste. I suppose it would depend on what the medicine is for and if it makes a dog feel better soon after taking it so they can put a cause and effect together.
