One thing I noticed, at least with my 891; MY ATAS locked up on me a short while ago-also on 40 Meters. I turned the radio off, turned it back on, set the radio on 20 Meters, and the ATAS started working again.
I've got to find how this is done on an FT100D. I was just gifted the radio and I bought the ATAS 120 second hand, it tuned on 10,12,15,17,20,30 fine but when I tried 40 it struggled and kept trying (I think I need more grounding) then it gave-up and fully retracted and won't move again!

On a FT897d and the FT857d You can go into the service menu By holdong down ABC and POWERING ON THE RIG , then go to menu 71 (ASTAS service) and use the UP and DOWN buttons to control the ATAS 120A so you can check the antenna is not sticky or slipping ..WARNING DONT CHANGE ANY SETTINGS OR YOU WILL BE IN THE BFC ( blown finals club)
Thank you very much, Chris - I had this happen to my ATAS today and followed the steps, and it worked famously ! Cheers, 73!
Cheers for the video, my Atas locked yesterday and after watching your video it's now fine...
Brilliant Mate, well done
Worked great. Just tried the method and the FT-897D is now functional again with the ATAS-120.
Thanks - after 2 days of strugling my Atas 120A is back working again :)
That’s great to hear Brian
Could you do a Video on how to do this with an FT-891????
I am sorry I don’t have the aerial anymore.
Just bought a new one Wish I'd seen this first.
I've heard from a few other Hams who have this antenna. We are not the only people who have had issues with the ATAS on 40 Meters.
hey bud how did u ground your atas???
Hi Chris, thanks for your video. Remember me? I’m living in York these days. I have just bought one and I am swatting up on it!
Simon Hodder Hi Simon yes I never knew that you moved. 857 works great with Atas. As long as it is properly grounded will work great.
Today, after one week of usage, mine locked up with the ft991a. Not very nice… thx for the video
It happened to mine loads. I hope the video fixed the problem. Thanks
Fixed my atas! Thanks!
Awesome mate
Go Team, Appreciate the Tip! 73
If you key the radio and hold up or down you can manually tune.
