My gardening life started with the question on google, “how to grow a mango tree from seed” it lead me to watching a series of videos about growing mango trees from seed. A year later now those little mango trees I started have all died but my love of gardening stuck. I have 4 tomato plants 3 squash plants, a few pepper plants, basil, pineapple sage, oregano, dill, cabbage, beans, and sunflowers. This is only my second “growing season” but I know I’ll garden for the rest of my life and I want to say thank you Luke for all of the amazing videos I’ve learned so much from you and many other garden RUclips channels. I’m always exited to see when you put up a new video and most importantly I’m always exited about gardening today and the thought of gardening in the future. Thank you so much for all of the content that you produce. Grow Big or Go Home.

Once you start and taste it you cant stop! For 40 years I have gardened and preserved it. My daughter, 1 of 4 kids said mom I dont remember seeing 1can of anything in our house so I never wanted to eat it at my friends house lol. Out of the 4 only 2 garden and preserve but one has gone on to raise organic meat and eggs as well. Yes he holds a full time job as well but he dose this on just half an acre and our family s always purchase the meat from him. Poor kid was born 100 years to late!

Fifty years ago I planted thirty confederate jasmine along my chain length fence. I used our tax refund to pay for them and money was short but I wanted privacy more in my backyard than new clothes. I didn't want to lose any of the plants and was fresh to planting anything. They told me to use a good but gentle flow around the base while counting to 30 slowly and I did and the hedge grew thick and lush. I've never heard much about watering but followed that advice and really soak the ground around a plant in the evening so more will go down instead of evaporating in the HOT Florida sun. Finally someone is addressing this and so glad your explained so well. Always wondered if I was overdoing it but always had such good returns. Thank you so much for this vital and simple information and explanation.

To find out how long it takes for a gallon of water to come out of your hose, turn it on in an empty (at least a gallon) bucket(with the sprayer you use attached) and at the power you would be spraying in the garden, then count off until you have a gallon of water. Deeper soil is so key! My longest raised bed is 18 inches deep, up 6 inches from last year. All of the plants in it are doing GREAT, and I believe the deeper soil level has a lot to do with that. I buried my tomatoes DEEP in that bed this year, and they are my healthiest tomato plants. I only water those plants about twice a week, in spite of the temperatures being over 90F every single day for days on end. I have less blight on those plants too. My container plants are a very different story -- they dry out MUCH faster and require more watering even if thoroughly watered. I used containers I believe are too shallow. Next year I will be putting larger plants in much deeper containers.

    • @doloresreynolds8145

Rachel Ward I got a good crop of tomatoes and peppers by growing them in 2 1/2 gallon containers. They did require almost daily watering, even with mulch (I used mowed grass). Lettuce, radishes, etc. grow well that way (but the radishes are water hogs). Herbs too. I even had a couple of smaller trees in huge buckets of planting mix (to keep the weight down). I lived in a mobile home park and wanted to be able to take it with me when I finally made the move out of town to the countryside. And yes, I hauled it all along when I went.

I saw your latest video on watering deeply! Then that's when it clicked.
I think I finally figured out why I'm loosing so many tomatoe plants.
Every tomatoe plant in my raised bed had a very small root ball. They looked good until July when higher temperatures and more intense sun arrived.
The root ball was to small and not deep enough to support the plant. Now that was probably because I planted them but never watered properly to build a root system.
Like many people we had rain often but I guess it was not deep enough and I didn't water.
Luckily I have backup plants grown from suckers and still can try again.
I really enjoy your videos and love buying your seeds. Keep up the great work.
I really should follow your way of planting garden for better success. It really does work.

Much respect for your direct and unapologetic approach recently. There are certain truths in gardening which are pretty simple but not well known, and you are doing a good job of exposing them. Gardening is really pretty simple if you get down to the fundamentals. Once you have the fundamentals down all that is left is to choose the right plants for your season and environment.

Can I vent? Back in January I ordered a ton of seeds from Luke..I was so excited for this growing season, starting my plants indoors. Watching the seedlings grow and thrive had me even more excited to get them in the ground! Then complications with my pregnancy arose and I was put on bed rest. Then Covid hit and garden centers shut down. Then the wet cold spring just kept on being cold and wet. I managed to get the plants in the ground, but so much failed. Slugs happened, not enough maintenance happened because I had a newborn. I look out to my garden beds and fight back disappointment. But in true Luke style, I am already planning my next seed order, planning for next year, and preparing for my fall garden. All this to say I'm not giving up!

I would add to what you say regarding clayey soils, to allow tap-rooted perennials like the docks and dandelions to grow in a relatively new garden. They will do three things for gardeners. One is to break through the hardpan. It is not that hard to dig the dock roots out. Two is, the top growth makes a fine green manure for the fallow time every gardener should practice on occasion. They also make a potent weed tea. Three is, when it comes time to dig the dock roots out, the roots make the best worm food for the compost heap. Composting worms love the stuff and will burrow into the dead roots in no time and produce more castings and young.

Great video. In the theme of building off of your previous videos I would really enjoy hearing what you have to say about rainwater vs city water. I have heard that chlorine is bad for plants but would like to know more about the science behind it and how it might affect the plants/soil. Thanks

I live on the side of a hill full of artesian wells. My soil has been built to perfect texture over the last 7 years or so of composting/mulching. Only during the longest of droughts do I need to worry about watering my 12 deep raised beds.
Out of my 1800sq ft backyard 750sq ft is garden

I've been growing tomatoes every summer for years in large plastic pots. Up till now, I've been filling the pots with water when the leaves begin to wilt and call it good. I'm going to purchase some two inch PVC pipe and set them in the pots several inches below the surface, water via those tubes and see if it makes a difference over what I've been doing. Much appreciated, bud.

I was thinking of doing that too, maybe 6 inch PVC pipe for garden? Or attach it to milk jug that could catch rain water

I do two gallons per plant/general area every 4 days if it's really hot and once a week when it's not smoldering outside.
I also have 4 inches of chunky coco coir on top which helps retain moisture.

I only did gentle watering over the top, but then one day I went to check it and the soil was actually dry 3 inches below. So an occasional deep watering is necessary.

I like to explain it as wetted volume. The more wetted volume of soil the more extensive the root system and the more access to water and nutrients the plant will end up having. Not to mention the deeper the root system the more stable the moisture level will be. And soil type makes a big difference in the most effective method of watering for your soil. It may sound complicated but it actually quite simple once you gain a little experience and put some thought into it. Experimentation is so important for understanding.

Also watering at depth provides the true development of mycorrhizae. These fungi can reach depths below what a tree reaches, but for this there must be moisture in the soil.

Shallow watering is called 'painting the grass' I have clay so I use hose splitters and the mister setting on the nozzle and just leave them on unless we get a huge downpour. It helps cool the yard and the water rarely pools up

Thanks for the reminder. I used to water more deeply. But have gotten away from it thinking the mulch covering will retain enough moisture to compensate for less watering.
