The fact that there's a Serious and Dark Godzilla movie and a Semi-Serious Action Heavy Godzilla movie at almost the same year just shows how versatile Godzilla is.

I'm just waiting to torrent the sub once it hits Japanese blu ray on May 1st. I'll buy the official when it releases, but I don't play that crap where Japan gets it first and then everyone else has to wait for the scraps. Waiting something like three years for the legal official version of Evangelion 3.33 in North America broke me of being nice about it.
And not just on Amazon Prime, either!
Yes full theatrical releases all the way. We need to see it on the big screen.

The people who do this aren't fans at all. Most of the time, it's anti woke psychopaths who exploit the success of Minus one by using it as a political "anti woke" weapon.
It's an easy way to detect Minus One bandwagoning tourists. They're really easy to single out, because they act like Godzilla is solely a somber atomic bomb allegory, because it's something they heard somebody else say in a review or something, ignoring the other 90 percent of the character's history. They really love that Oppenheimer "Destroyer of Worlds" quote that was in the '14 teaser.
I love the serious fare like Shin and Minus One, and Godzilla 1985 is what made me a fan as a child, but the sillier stuff like Monster Zero, Megalon, Sea Monster, Mechagodzilla, and the original King Kong vs Godzilla is what I grew up with, and I kept coming back to.
As an old ass Godzilla (and Kong) fan I appreciate that the we get so much variety nowadays. I get a masterpiece story driven Godzilla movie and a silly non stop action movie with Godzilla, King Kong and Mothra! This movie takes me back to watching the old Showa films on my grandpas vhs. Man am I lucky! 😅
I hope it does well in Gojira's homeland!

I owe Wingard a big apology. I have a few minor nitpicks here and there (you don't use radar underwater, you use SONAR), but overall the writing for this film was much better than I expected for a film inspired by late Showa-era Toho. I would put it as a somewhat distant (but still very good) second behind "Kong: Skull Island" in terms of quality of script from the Legendary film series.

And saying 'it's a "..." movie' is a poor excuse for bad writing. It's why so many "children's" films are dreck nowadays. The staff feels like it doesn't even have to bother to try.

Regardless of how you feel about the movie I think we can all agree that it stirred up the best thing that we could've possibly asked for and that is: the memes!
Personally for me, I thought New Empire would've been better as a video game than a movie so we could've kept the goofiness levels and have the consistency of the lore intact for the Monsterverse. It was a fun dumb film but I really hope this is the only time they do this and we go back to the original settings of the MV like Skull Island. After all, we want to see other Toho monsters established in this world while building up a world instead of just adding whatever we just think in the top of our heads yk?
Just as the 2010's were a golden age for comic book movies, I feel the 2020's are going to be a golden age for kaiju movies. I do have to give the MCU credit, the silly plots and massive visual effects banazas, helped make audiences in the west more acceptable to something as silly as GIANT MONSTERS BEING THE MAIN CHARACTERS!!
Ones you actually root for, ones you cry for, ones...that actually more relatable than humans. Humans today are boring creatures. But when I see the kaijus in the monterverse, I see characters not mindless animals. You see anger, sadness, euthoria, relief and more from these kare like watching ancient warriors on a journey.
I mean Kong reminds me a lot of Kratos from the God of War series after he had a kid.
Virgin moviegoers:
- "Minus One is better! Because it's serious and emotional!"
- "No! GxK is better! Because it's pure escapism!"

Minus one and GXK are two completely different movies! Minus one is a completely classic, masterpiece of a movie, GXK is a silly goofy movie for newcomers like yourself, if you are a true fan then you’ll appreciate it

ngl i didn't like this movie nearly as much as any of the other monster verse films besides maybe kotm but I got the Godzilla I always wanted with Minus One so anything extra is just icing on the cake. G fans are eating good these days and It's only gonna get better with the massive success of both of these movies!

Even as a fun showa-type brawl film… it was much more of a *_Kong x Godzilla_* movie than a *_Godzilla x Kong_* film.
King Kong is the only kaiju who really got any updated story in the movie, whereas all of Godzilla's parts don't have ANY lasting development for him in Legendary's universe.
Essentially, Godzilla was a complimentary plot device to King Kong's story in the film, so it feels like less of a "Godzilla movie" (since you could skip this and not miss anything about where Godzilla's story is at in a sequel film), and more of a "King Kong movie" (you couldnt skip this without missing HUGE changes to what Kong is up to now in Hollow Earth).
Always fun to see Godzilla in a different context, but a little odd having him feel like a secondary background character in his own movie.
I would complain if Kongs story weren't compelling and the screen time G does get wasn't well utilized. In the time we see Godzilla on-screen, he kills 2 titans, had a semi rematch with Kong, reunites with.Mothra and proceeds to tag with Kong. I'd actually argue that G did way more in this film than he did in GvK.
So yeah, doesn't feel like a 'secondary plot device' to me. But people gotta complain I guess.
Godzilla is the secondary protagonist, not a background character. Kong is the more emotional character and historically has more screentime. Can't give them both equal focus when one character bonds with humans and the other one doesn't. It's both a godzilla and kong film. Kong driving the story and godzilla showing up when necessary is no different from any godzilla movie mostly being carried by the humans moving it forward and godzilla showing up when necessary. Doesn't make it any less of a G flick overall.
Even though this year is Godzilla’s 70th anniversary, last year was Kong’s 90th anniversary, so I think it made since for this to be more of a Kong movie, and besides, Minus One is already the 70th anniversary movie for Godzilla.

Maybe Wingard didn't want to get death threats again from Kong fans? But they did say the next movie will focus a lot more on Godzilla, can't f'n wait!
