I’ve made it through my class and now I’m competing against my school. Do I have to learn Latin or Ancient Greek or Russian in a month? December 4th is our school spelling bee. But otherwise this really helped. Thanks a lot!
@@lottiecollier6706 this might be too late, but 1. write down all the words multiple times. it makes things MUCH easier, and engraves the words in your memory. 2. consider buying the book scripps publishes every year. it has a lot of the words they will be asking after the rounds with the words you already know are done. 3. have someone help you, recite your words to them and the ones you get wrong mark them. once your done, write the marked down words again this time like 3-5 times more than normal. Then make sure you fixed those words, and then test yourself again to make sure you know every word.
@cherrytomato 6_9 I take this opportunity to write a long piece on spelling bees. RUclips killed my formatting but whatever (edit: logged on with my computer and fixed it, it's better now) Enjoy, lol! I just finished my regional spelling bee, and they can be pretty nerve-wracking. Compared with your school spelling bee, which probably had 20 people or less, you’re now on this big stage with, like, 90 other people who want that trophy just as bad as you do. Lots of words can be really tough, but there are lots of tricks that can make this spelling bee a breeze. 1: Don’t Get Your Hopes Up. This may sound rude, but it’s true. If you walk into a spelling bee with your head the size of a truck tire and complete assurance that you will win, you may end up losing and it could actually be quite traumatic. That happened to me in fourth grade, overconfidence took over and I rushed my word and was eliminated. I was sulking for weeks. Trust me, if you want to do well, walk into your spelling bee with your head held high, but an acceptance that yes, you may lose and that won’t be the end of the world. Just take your time and ask questions. That brings me to my next point. 2: Asking Questions. Asking questions in your spelling bee can make all the difference. You could’ve heard the word wrong, you could’ve mixed it up with a similar word(that happened to me in fourth grade as well, but that’s not the point), anything could go wrong. That’s where asking questions comes in. As you probably know, at a spelling bee you can ask the pronounced any of the following questions. Can you repeat the word? Can you define the word? Can you put the word in a sentence? Can I have the part of speech? Can I have the language of origin? Asking any of those questions can help clarify and enhance your spelling. For example, say you had the word “amused”. But you heard the word “abused”. You rush to spell the word without asking any questions, and what happens? You get it wrong. And imagine, you could’ve taken your time and spelled it correctly, and you’d most likely be going to Washington. Here’s another instance. You could be up to the mic, and get a word you’ve never heard before in your life. You ask for the language of origin and, with that combined info, you spell the word correctly. Learning to trace word origins can help you out of a sticky situation(ha, get it? Sticky situation, spelling bee?)by telling you about what language a word comes from and why it means what it does. 3. Learning to Trace Word Origins. This may sound crazy. However, stay with me on this one. As I said above, there are a bunch of ways learning word origins can help. All words have a language of origin, and that language says a lot about how your particular word is spelled. Take the word “telephone”. You look up the word and find out it comes from the language Greek. The first part, “tele”, is from the Greek word meaning far, at a distance. “Phone” is from the Greek word meaning voice. Okay, fine, you know that. But how does that help you? Say you’re in the spelling bee and you get the word “telekineses”. You ask and find out the origin is Greek. What does that tell you? Well, it tells you that the first part of the word is probably spelled “tele”. And you can probably use that to figure out “kineses” as well. 4: Study. This is most obvious, however, it is crucial. If you don’t study, you may get thrown a curveball during your bee and end up with a word that you’ve never heard of, spell it wrong, then go home and find out it was on the list all along and you could’ve studied it and gotten it right. There are many ways to study your word list(assuming you have one, of course, if not ask your teacher for one). One way is to just read the list over and repeat and spell the words to yourself. This is the least effective way to memorize the spellings of words, in my opinion, but it’s better than not studying at all. There are two strategies that, in my opinion, are the most effective. The first one is, write down every word twice. This is a very time and energy-consuming matter so maybe don’t write down all of them, just the ones you have trouble with. Writing things down is proven to help you remember things better than reading them, so bear that in mind if you’re struggling. The other method is to get a parent or guardian or friend to act as the pronouncer and have a miniature bee at home. Have your pronouncer read words off the list and answer your questions about their given word. Maybe even get a bell for when you spell wrong. Even try to get others to compete against you. This may sound silly, but believe me, it works. Not only is it my go-to method for memorizing words but it helps you get a feel for being in a real spelling bee. It really works very well! These are just a few tips that helped me win my regional bee and hopefully can help you too! Good luck!
i’m having the competition for the state to see who represents our state, should I learn other languages/learn portions of languages or should I just study the words (the words of the champions)
