According to Vedas in Yuga cycle the ages see a gradual decline of dharma, wisdom, knowledge, intellectual capability, life span, emotional and physical strength.
Satya Yuga - Virtue reigns supreme. Human stature was 21 cubits (33 ft 6 inches). Average human lifespan was 100,000 years.
Treta Yuga - There was 3 quarter virtue and 1 quarter sin. Normal human stature was 14 cubits (22 ft 4 inches). Average human lifespan was 10,000 years.
Dwapara Yuga - There was 1 half virtue and 1 half sin. Normal human stature was 7 cubits (11 ft 2 inches). Average human lifespan was 1,000 years.
Kali Yuga - There is 1 quarter virtue and 3 quarter sin. Normal human stature is 3.5 cubits (5 ft 3 inches). Average human lifespan will be 100 years...
In the present days we may be said to live in a Kali Yuga, which is said to have started in 3102 BCE with the end of the Mahabarata(Dwapra). This date is also considered by many Hindus to be the day that Lord Krishna left Earth and went to abode

The concept of Lokas (heavens) is also well documented in the 3rd Enoch, where Rabbi Ishmael is conversing with Metatron and Metatron guides him through all the different heavens. In Greece in the us in Egypt in Peru in Cambodia huge perfectly cut stones fitted together so perfectly a hair couldn’t fit through yet we are taught to believe that people without power tools created those huge stones. The Vedic culture of Bharat has a flourishing civilization at the time of Muslim invasion in 900 AD and managed to hold onto its root for majority of the time. Despite of numerous raids and destructions by the Muslims, Hindu civilization did not fade or get marginalized.
It was the British who saw these and decided that the only way they could control Bharat the way they could control other places like Africa was through try wipe the Hindu civilization by implementing their own. For that, they created their own Caste System, choose people from their own loyals (local groups) and tried to recreate a sub-society which could idolize the British. Below the seven upper realms lie seven lower realms, of Patala, the underworld and netherworld
Svarga is seen as a transitory place for righteous souls who have performed good deeds in their lives but are not yet ready to attain moksha (the realisation of oneness with the divine (Brahman) or where the duality cease to exists).
The capital of Svarga is Amaravati and its entrance is guarded by Airavata (the white elephant of Indra). Svarga is presided over by Indra, the leader of the devas.
It is mentioned in scriptures that in pralay only three lokas( trilokee or tribhuvan) are destroyed and after pralay they are created.So only these three are made from physical material ,rest are phil sophical ( i.e.higher dimensions)What these three lokas might be .At other places in scriptures ,these are describe d as bhoolok,antriksh and swalok..These might be earth ,the space between earth and stars and planets.These stars and planets are called swalok because they are made from physical matter like our bhoolok and are not inthe the form of energy I e philosophical.The space between earth and stars and planets is very little material ( in the forme of comets ,asteroids,gases and dust clouds) Therefore it is not empty.

Kindly do reasearch about the Holy Sage Vishwamitra and the story of King Trishanku wherein King Trishanku with the help of Sage Vishwamitra performed great penance and made offerings to the Gods to gain access to the swarga loka the abode of the Devas. He wanted to enter the swarga loka in his human form which was rejected by the Devas and king of Devas. So Sage Vishwamitra told them that King Trishanku was an equalant to the Devas and then he told the Devas that he has the powers to create a replica of the Deva loka and everything as it was in Deva loka and he used his divine powers to create a parallel swarga loka and pushed King Trishanku in the new Swarga loka. The Deva King Indra was shocked by this and he tried to break this but he couldn't and finally using his own divine powers he managed to turn the New Swarga loka of Trishanku upside down.
You can research more on Trishanku Swarga the only one and only King who got his own Swarga loka.

By the way Story of Sage Vishwamitra itself is very interesting about how from being a powerful King he had given up his Kingdom after being badly being militarily defeated by another powerful sage Vashishtha who didn't have any Army. King Vishwamitra then realised that military power wasn't everything because sage Vashishtha had used his divine powers using holy mantras to create a very powerful armed force with the help of a divine cow called Kamdhenu which was given by the Gods to sage Vashishtha. King Vishwamitra wanted this cow for himself but couldn't get it no matter how hard and how many times he waged war.
Finally he gave up his Kingdom went to the deep forests and lived a reclusive life in dhyana yogic meditation to achieve the level of spirituality to become an equalant to sage Vashishtha. It took 1000s of years. From just becoming a Rishi to Raja Rishi to finally becoming a Brahma Rishi which is achieving the highest level of spirituality. Sage vishwamitra was totally transformed after this. He then went on to become the holy teacher Guru to Lord Ram and his younger brother Lakshmana in the Epic Ramayana. Sage Vishwamitra taught the two young Prince all about the celestial weapons of the Gods which you can evoke by uttering the divine secret mantras which had the powers of mass destruction. These holy mantras could bring out various changes to the atmosphere Vayu Astra Massive Storms Typhoon hurricane, Sarpa Astra raining down poisonous snakes down on your enimies, Agni Astra Raining down hell fire, Varuna Astra using tons of water as in high seas tidal waves, there were so many other Astras basically Nuclear Chemical and Biological weapons 1000s of years before in different Yugas and the ultimate one was Bramha Astra Nuclear weapons. All these are mentioned in the Holy texts.

Usually penance can be done by anyone by closing our eyes and usually with folded cross legged on the ground and above a prayer mat preferably. This is mainly because whatever energy you absorb with your praying should not be grounded if we sit on bare earth. I hope you get the point. The prayer or yoga mat will act as an insulator.
2. Any mantras or holy slokas?
Well there are so many. Brahman meaning the ultimate is a power which is absolute. It is unimaginable and it is neither a he or she and it is formless and can be with form. So it can be conflicting isn't it? But ancient Sanskrit teaching says that God cannot be seen by us mortals because we have not attained such level to visualise.
In the Mahabharata war Lord Krishna is advising the warrior Arjuna that you trust in me and do your duty as a kshtriya warrior and slay the Evil forces even if they are your cousins uncles etc who were on the opposite side. During this conversation Lord Krishna tells warrior Arjuna the various aspects of himself and he tells Arjuna that as a mortal with your eyes you cannot see me however I will grant you the divine eyesight with which you can see me and this dialogue between Lord Krishna who is the 8th Avatar of Lord Narayan and Arjuna in the battlefield of Kurukshetra is called Bhagavad Gita literally meaning the dialogue of Lord Narayan to us mortals. Please kindly get a copy of this Bhagavad Gita and read it. Here Lord Krishna shows himself in his Vishwaroopam meaning unimaginable form. No one else in the battlefield can visualise this except Arjuna and Hanuman who is immortal who is the Avatar of Lord Shiva.
Now coming to hymns slokas since there are plenty available people recite them after learning from various sources. At home while we are young our parents are the first teachers or Guru. The most easiest one word prayer is slowly keep chanting within your own mind inside you silently "Ram Ram Ram" continuously. This is also a most powerful Mantra and it is chanted by Hanuman an avatar of Lord Shiva who comes to Earth as Vanara meaning forest dweller a different race sadly people call monkey God but it is not. Lord Shiva takes birth as Hanuman in this Vanara form to assist Lord Ram to fight against the Evil forces.
Lord Ram was born as a human to a King Dasharath. Please read Ramayan for more details. In Hindi language this is called Ram Naam Japa meaning praying to Lord Ram who is the Avatar of Lord Narayan the ultimate. Iskon devotees are always heard praying "Hare Ram Hare Ram Ram Ram Hare Hare, Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare". Meaning glory to Lord Ram and glory to Lord Krishna. You can use this. Other than this there is another deity who is revered in ancient Vedic teachings. He is Lord Mahadev or Shiva. As I said Brahman is absolute these gods & goddess are a representation of the ultimate. Bramha shown as a 3 headed God (not to be confused with Brahman the ultimate) is the creator God and is called Srishti Karta. His task is to keep creating. Bramha lives in Bramha loka.
Lord Vishnu or Narayan is called the safe keeper of the universe. He protects the Earth & it's living creatures including mankind safe from the Evil forces and here he manifests himself in different Yugas meaning times in different forms. There are main Dasha Avatar Google it. 10 avatar and apart from this he also has taken many different avatars. He has fought the Evil forces directly or indirectly. Lord Vishnu lives in Vishnu loka a seperate abode not accessible to anyone. Lord Shiva from ancient times is shown always as a very mystic and most powerful ultimate destructive powers, he is believed to endless formless and a combination of 5 elements Agni Fire, Vayu Wind, Varuna Water, Bhoomi Earth and Akash Sky Space. He is always seen in meditation yogic position. Here he is considered as the Adi Guru the first eternal teacher and everything is attributed to Lord Shiva as Mahadev meaning the greatest Deva or God. Maha means Great. Only very few have this title. Mahadev, Maha Vishnu, Maha Ganapati Elephant headed God, Maha Devi the Female mother goddess.
You can also chant Om Namah Shivaya the most powerful Mantra slowly keep repeating it again and again and again countless number of times usually prayer beads necklace is used which has 108 beads.
Those who want to pray to the mother goddess can chant this powerful Mantra Om Sakthi Om Sakthi Om Sakthi countless number of times.
Finally there is an ultimate all powerful Mantra which is considered as the ultimate nothing is more powerful than this mantra and it is called the Gayatri Maha Mantra. I am not supposed to write it. You can kindly Google and read or listen to various people who have chanted this most powerful maha mantra.
Please kindly understand that all these mantras will be effective if we chant them properly and regularly and with full faith and devotion. Interestingly the ancient wise people have called Mind is a Monkey meaning it is not controllable and it doesn't sit in one place and keeps moving like a monkey here and there. So if we can control the mind by emptying our thoughts and keep chanting these one word or longer mantras we will slowly and steadily reach a level of spirituality and we are still long way from realising that ultimate Brahman.
As humans we are all having so many weaknesses and vices. These are coming under many categories. If you have absolute control over this then you will elevate yourself to the next level.

It is indeed true! The vedas have described many things including celestial events unknown by almost anyone except those that were there to experience them and could only now be verified by use of advanced computer software something they didn't have. The King also experienced that when he awoke the age of Kali had just begun and the people and trees etc.. were all now Pygmy sized!

It's not a religion. Religion preaches some values and forces them upon its followers, Sanatana Dharma does not do that. It teaches, it preaches, it educates but it does not force any practice/rule upon its followers

The term Loka and Lokam are two different (and interesting) meaning. Loka means a celestial body (like different World). Lokam can be translated as "Realm" (which could consists of series of celestial bodies or Planet).
So in a way, Loka could be called Planet Earth while the Solar System can be considered as a Lokam (because it has multiple Planets orbiting a single star and all of these celestial bodies seems to be working in unison. Yes, that could also apply to other Solar Systems as well as Galaxies.
So when Ancient Hindus used these terms, they are already writing their stories in Scientific terms which were only used in modern times, describing distance Worlds, Solar Systems and even maybe distance civilization which could be functioning as an empire with multiple Solar Systems in its midst, similar to what you see in movies like Star Wars and Star Trek.

In scriptures one constellation is referred to as Lok. There are 14 lok as per scriptures. The beings in different lok have different names. Deva in Swarg, Manushya in earth, Asur in Patal Naag in Naag Lok and so on. So at least 14 civilizations are their on this universe on different levels.
