You are definitely best Eurovision channel. Actual reactions and analyst and lot of research put into the songs and artists beforehand. It's boring when others just listen and don't have anything other to say aside from good/bad song. Actual editing too is fantastic.
Hitaammin hautaan is something what I see as hopeful song. Nelli has something called CVI which is a disease where her immune system doesn't work quite well against viruses and bacteria. She wrote this song during covid when she had to stop herself for a moment (stopped performing and took a break) and wrote this song into her diary. The song to me is about stopping for a moment even if our pace has gotten slower we can still find enjoyment in those moments and finding happiness in what we have. Slower to the grave is the song title. I think it is such a beautiful way of thinking even when going through something like she has, there is still light in the world. "I don't mind taking my sweet time going to the grave"
I think it's interesting how Finland has gone from these boring terrible national finals in yester years to the UMK it is today, starting kind of with 2021 Blind Channel, and like with 2023 totally "exploding" to the event it is nowadays. Love how a small music country (kind compared to many music countries in Europe) like Finland really the Finnish Broadcaster YLE put everything in it to make UMK the great event it is today, with production, staging, artist videos and the Nokia Arena.
Me as a german: "Well, this must be a song about a vitamin-containing skinlotion!" Official translation: "Slower to the grave" Me in the aftermath: ☠ Anyways, nice song! I don't think it will be the winner in the end, but the fact that the first two songs made it to my playlist is already impressive! Hyvä Suomi!
That's Finnish humor for you. Nelli is a confident, lovely and funny lady so lots of love though I'm surely gonna fall for a rock song when it's published...
Lmao the brain fart at 3:59 "We haven't seen a song in Finnish in a while, have we? Yeah no we haven't, only that one song two years ago that is now Spotify's most listened Finnish-language song of all time :D
I think the whole concept of the video is genius. The cube made out entirely of concrete and her at the end looking calmly at the tsunami that's going to wipe all that away.
love the umk journey graphics😍 i think this is soft, very finnish, good pop song!! nelli is a great dancer and very diverse singer😎 and, VIIVI will give us a ballad i think! AND your finnish pronunciation is good considering you're not a native speaker😊 no need to go to jail for that, haha
This song gives me a very strong association to Kuumaa’s ”Ylivoimainen”, even though they don’t sound alike. Both have this same kind of pleasantness that only get’s stronger with more listens. Thank you very much for your videos, I love your humour and insightfulness.
Been a fan of Nelli for a few years now and while it’s not my favourite song of hers, I really enjoy it + lyrics, melodies, and vocalisations are so yummy. Can’t wait to see her perform it, she’s such a skilled dancer.
Even though I know the lyrics are not about this, I've kinda adopted it to what I'm feeling now that I've entered my fourties but have friends ten years younger than I am. I'm now fine just slowing down and watching the clouds, smell the roses and whatnot, the FOMO has subsided and the younger crowd can run on about without me. I have no need to go go go all the time. I love this song, I've listened to it so many times today already and put it on two of my favourite playlists on Spotify. It calms me. Not necessarily what we'll send to the esc but I'll keep it for my self anyway. 😉
I think a lot of musical artists would be quite happy to know the people are listening to their songs and taking their own inspiration and interpretation from them. I will always believe that give that Wolf a banana is a pro vaccination song, that’s just what it means to me 😂
I love your reactions. You have good energy and positive attitude towards most songs and countries efforts. Of course if something doesn't work you tell that too obviously. But in a kind way and i like it. But is it just me or are you even more energetic and happy when you are talking about umk. I might be biased to say 'cause i'm finnish. 😅
no youre right, its because they release the songs one per day, so its more exciting and its easier to give more attention. As opposed to other national finals who dump 30 songs on your all at once. also I think the quality of UMK is the exceptional Thanks for the kind words 🙏🏻
In love with this song and the fact that Nelli’s making a comeback through UMK!🩷 I wish people would just let others enjoy the pink poppy princess vibes and gorgeous vocals without worrying about how well the song would do in Eurovision. UMK is so much more than just a platform for the Eurovision these days, it can really make a difference in a Finnish artist’s career. And personally, I love that! BTW, I’m quite sure the “thinking Finnish woman” (😆💞) is going to be Viivi with her song “Aina” (“Always”) this year, they said her song’s gonna be a big romantic ballad!
Radio friendly pop is not quite my thing. So, I don't think this will be my winner. But that being said, I listened to this song this morning a couple of times, and then I found it playing in my head basically all day at work, and I was kinda vibing to it by myself 😁 I like the rythm of the singing in the "juoskaa te, jotka juoksette" -part. And the video is so pretty!
Did you notice that wave coming at the end? Shadow building on her face and the sound at the end? She was calm and happy waiting for the inevitable end/death.
This is ice-melting Nordic Pop par excellence!🤍✨️ All these hauntingly catchy melodies and her stellar voice are radiating the spirit of Suomi!🩵🇫🇮❄️ No doubt, my no. 1 so far!💋✨️ Feels sooo beautifully Finnish, and the distinct 80's vibe has made me dance all day and night so far🎶 Well done, Nelli!👏
@@ESCTom Why wouldn't you expect that I love this?😝 Now I'm curious, but I guess my followers probably agree with you and were kinda surprised about my pink euphoria today!😆 Well I have always been loving a synth- and 80's-vibe in pop songs, I have always loved Finland and the Finnish language, so it's not that surprising if I think about it!🙌
I’m not 100% sure if this is true but apparently the song’s meaning is about a disease nelli has that stopes something with her immune system so she is very weak to viruses so the song is about how she could die suddenly to the grave
Appreciate that you do adequate research before jumping in. There are too many esc creators who dont bother figuring out the pronunciation, dont bother looking up the meaning behind the lyrics, etc. it just comes off lazy and disrespectful. Anyway, im obsessed with this one already. Great reaction 👍
2/2 downloads for me too. I know we like positivity but nothing else in the contest has excited me yet. UMK been probably the strongest NF in the last 3 years. Due a win 👀
Not a bad song at all, but it's a bit in the middle of the road. A bit too safe. It's not building up to something bigger. This won't stand out at Eurovision, knowing that Finland usually has something more outstanding to show us. But it's a good radio-friendly song.
💯% agree. This song is way over-hyped. Umk always has great production so can make a basic song seem nicer than it is, but this definitely is not a strong strategic choice at all. It's kind of bland imo (and made multiple people I showed it to snooze) + is the type of song that will get lost in the mix, despite having beautiful lyrics. Sonically it just isn't competitive. Looking forward to the other songs to be released though!
I think that the title "hitaammin hautaan" (slower to the grave) is quite thoughtful. We say sometimes in Finland, ironically when somebody for instance risks his/her life by jaywalking because he/she is in hurry, that "hänellä on kiire hautaan" (he/she is in a hurry to get to his/her grave). So saying "hitaammin hautaan" means taking it easy, not to hurry to the grave.
A good song & lovely visuals, but of the 2 released so far, I prefer the 1st one, Neea's (but may be in the minority in Finland in this); oh, and since you mentioned, there *is* going to be a huge power ballad too, by Viivi, called "Aina" (ie. "always"), I think it's the 4th song to be released) 😉 (It was touted by commentators as a song to be played in weddings forever from now on, not sure if that's a good or a bad thing, ie. is it something very syrupy or just grandeous... ;))
@ESCTom It probably doesn't, because at least I don't know what's wrong with being a song played in weddings 😅 To me it just sounds like being a song that tells beautifully about love or partnership.
On paper this is totally more of a radio song than "Eurovision song", but Nelli Matula surely can perform live so unless Yle totally screws up the staging, this will be great on stage too. I think this is staying in my head more easily than the first song, but i still hope (and think) there will be something more "powerfull" next week as this would probably be a borderline qualifier in Eurovision. Nelli has told that actually one of the reasons she applied to UMk was the show/stage element of Eurovision as she is very talented in that. Also since you asked, the way you spell her name sounds like "Nelli Mattala", 1 t is spelled as 1 t in finnish. 😄 Btw there are some "rumours" that Erika's song has some Rammstein influence and she has told that it will be somewhat different than her typical previous song style 👀. And Käärijä seems to love the song, i saw him reply to it somewhere "i came already" 🤣 And Viivi will have Ballad.
As the hook is fairly understated this is definitely a grower and not a shower - all great visials aside. But I have this on repeat now, lyrics are really sadgreat. I think she'll do great but not win because to win you need to come through w/o repeat listens.
Nelli had a health scare in the middle of her carreer hype. She's still dealing with it. So I think this is her realizing She needs to slow down a bit, enjoy the life, and not be in such a rush to get life done.
Pronunciation tip since you asked: a single T is shorter, not HiTTamin rather HitAAMMin and not HauTTaan but HautAAn 😄 In her name also, NeLLi Matula, not MaTTala 👍 Otherwise great!
Yeah I was about to comment that the pronunciation was very decent, only that problem with making t as double and double a as singular one is wrong 😅 But you would be understood pronouncing like that, too 😁
The big ballad will be coming from Viivi ! Nelli's song is a good one but I feel its done more to up her carreer in Finland than be really a contestant for Eurovision.
