Thank you very much for sharing the video of Mandaluyong. You clearly see the disparity between the affluent and the working class. Yet life goes on and folks do whatever they can support their families despite the financial constraints. I noticed the strong sense of community and connection among the residents in the video. Children playing, sari sari stores and tricycles everywhere.

Thanks for this! I lived in the Manila area for several months in 1994-95 and have been back a few times since. One thing that I really notice that is different: when I was there, a huge proportion of the cars on the street were old clunkers. Now they all look pretty new and well-maintained. Also, the traffic is not as heavy, though that may just be the region you were in. Other than that, everything looks really familiar!

The homeless tents in LA, SF California and Portland Oregon is worse compared to what you see in this video. The US homeless are miserable. Many on this Mandaluyong video have smiling people, kids playing, small food business owners, motorcycle owners and transport business. Not pretty place but generally not extremely miserable. At least I know myself would rather live in Mandaluyong than in a tent under a freeway bridge in Portland during the winter.

This is something I feel that a lot of foreigners wishing to come to the United State don't understand. The Philippines without a doubt has some extreme poverty and corruption. But a lot of Americans from all incomes can make money, job a decent job, but feel empty inside from being alive but not actually "living." I'm an expat and have been in the Southeast Asian region for a while. The contrast to what's found in the city and suburbs of the USA and most of Europe and SE Asia is conspicuous. There are a lot of reasons for this in the USA but I mostly blame suburban sprawl and social polarization.

Interesting concept video. A real street view tells everything to us a lot.
This is what the government needs to have attention with, not only beautifying those commercial areas, but also to the tiniest alleys around.
I think the rumor about dividing the Brgy. Addition Hills into more baranggays is always a good idea. The dense population there is hard to manage, seriously.
Don't conclude and generalize the population as lazy. I know many people there, working hard.
Maytunas creek clearing is a great project done there.
Well, despite the city's big malls, corporate building and condominiums it's hard to believe that there is a wide slum out there. Despite the city's wealthy image, it has still a poor side.

@@jayneh2006 - Actually a lot of them are better off than most of the poor Canadians in Canada when I was there. The problem is zoning and poor city planning. A lot of families here build houses up 4 to 6 stories high without following any Building code. Haphazard electrical and plumbing construction. No planning on load bearing measurements or even proper firewalls.
The area usually gets a major fire 2 to 3 times a year. The bad wet section you've seen here in the area have just recently been torched a few months ago. Destroying hundreds of houses.(that's the reason a lot of the houses are unpainted or unfinished looking) It'll take a while to fix that part of the area, by the time they finished painting them another area somewhere will get burned.

35:25 MANDALUYONG As with the etymological legends of many Philippine places, when the foreigners asked what the place was called, the locals answered with the description "madaluyong" ("undulating"), later transcribed by Spanish writers as "Mandaluyong," with the addition of an “n”.
Another version of the name is based on a legend that a Maharlika named Luyong fell in love with Manda, the lovely daughter of a barangay chieftain. The chieftain did not like Luyong and forbade him Manda's hand. Luyong overcame this objection by winning a series of tribal contests, as was the custom at the time. The couple settled thereafter in a place which was later called “Mandaluyong" - a term made up of joining their names.

To all the fools saying the locals are too lazy, you are forgetting how hard farming is without expensive machinery for automation then add on top of that a typhoon season for half the year that will flood all your land and destroy all your basic infrastructure. All this explains why most low land is only suitable for rice farming or else crops that are not perishable like coffee & tree nuts. Many crops are destroyed when the weather is bad in an island country with unstable weather. If you shopped the local markets and paid attention to what's in season vs what is available for an affordable price you would know.
