  • Counting is under way in elections for Northern Ireland's regional assembly, where a party that wants to leave the United Kingdom could come out on top.
    Sinn Fein was once the political wing of an armed movement that opposed British rule.

    If Irish unionists want to remain part of the UK they can, all they have to do is hop on a ferry, nobody is stopping them.
    It just makes logical sense that the island of Ireland should eventually become one country with no international borders carving out enclaves and causing endless grief for the local population..

    "Ulster is British". I got news for you, Orangies. Donegal is Ulster, and Donegal is not British. And Derry (as well as as South Armagh, Short Strand, and Falls Road) certainly have more in common with Donegal than they do with anywhere in Britain (which is a different island, in case you didn't know). Such brainless arguments like "Ulster is British" and "No Surrender" are not enough to stop the march of time.

This isn’t a sudden move for a United Ireland, not at all 🤣 It’s due to the Unionist votes being split with infighting and the centrists Alliance (non sectarian) having a huge surge. The numbers are still nowhere near the required amount to even trigger a border poll, never mind actually win one. Sinn Fein haven’t all of a sudden won a load more seats.

    What's this border poll all these Unionists keep barking on about? They're talking more of a poll than the nationalists? So if there was a poll what would unionists have to worry about?

      @@Thedrifter1 you are wrong on the first point. Only the N Ireland electorate get to decide N Ireland's future. Now should they vote for a United Ireland, it's likely that the Southern Government would want to put it to the Southern Electorate, possibly with any changes to the constitution of the Republic that would have been negotiated in talks after a successful referendum in the North. I have heard legal people say no referendum is actually stipulated for the Republic in the Good Friday Agreement to enable unity as it is agreed in the Good Friday Agreement, but certainly any additional change to their constitution can only happen after a successful vote in the Republic.
      Your second point is true. The decision to call a referendum in the North rests with the British secretary of state for NI. It has to happen though once there is convincing evidence that it can be successful.

The Unionist community is still the largest in Northern Ireland, so when you see the ridiculous waitlists for treatment under the NHS you should know it hurts more unionists than any other group since it's the largest group. Same goes for the terrible performance of protestant schools in their districts/cost of living crisis etc. The DUP are doing more damage to their own community than anyone else.

    The dominant nationalist and unionist party both put forward a leader, should one withdraw, Stormont ceases to function under the GFA. I don't recall who it was that came up with this contingency but to stop Stormont being shutdown when say for example the dup withdraw from or refuse to return to government and represent the unionist demographic, the next unionist party should take their place. The symbolism of refusing to return to government is still intact but the drawback of shutting down Stormont is negated. It is either substitute the dup with the next unionist party or suffer under direct rule from Westminster specifically jacob rees mogg.

    • @LeMerch
      @LeMerch 2 года назад +12

      No it hasn't. Trade is not a devolved issue, its a Westminster one. Therefore the Protocol is between GB and NI. It's an international treaty between EU & UK that solves a very tricky issue but keep in mind that most Unionist parties pushed HARD for Brexit. They took a risk and it backfired and now they are trying to blame Ireland and the EU.

    • @naughtiusmaximus7103
      @naughtiusmaximus7103 2 года назад +5

      Well, would you prefer the US and EU drag the UK into the Single Market and Customs Union via economic sanctions then? When they inflict it, UK is sure to capitulate. US has the muscle and set the precedent during Suez, while UK imports a concerning amount of its daily needs from the EU. Quite vulnerable to any disruptions from either. God forbid both. Neither will tolerate even the hint of damage to the GFA, and the EU additionally will not tolerate a giant hole in its Single Market, a core principle to the bloc.
      To respect the spirit of the GFA, Northern Ireland must match Republic of Ireland (EU) regulatory scheme to eliminate checks on goods. Because checks on goods would mean border infrastructure necessary to check it. So if this regulatory border can't exist at the sea, the GFA compliant answer *as it has been for 20+ years* is to have Great Britain *also* follow EU regulatory scheme.
      Only this time since it's outside the EU by its own free will, not have a say on what that policy is or will be. That after all requires EU Parliament, which requires EU membership. Following EU rules however (and hence eliminating checks) does not require membership, respecting the Brexit referendum.
      This means forfeiting all independent trade deals (tariffs must be aligned to eliminate customs checks,) legislation must be *at minimum* compliant with present and future EU Single Market rules (to eliminate standards checks,) and be subject to European Court of Justice which oversees the Single Market. Not a big deal as it sounds given Britain was already subject to this up until a few years ago, and the trade deals it has negotiated have been amusingly flabby.
      This way we can respect both Brexit referendum (leaving EU in some form) **and** GFA at the same time. Republicans don't see a border on Ireland and Unionists don't see a border at the Irish Sea. It's a win-win for everyone......well maybe not the "sovereignty!" nutters in Great Britain (England, Wales, Scotland,) but they're not relevant to the Good Friday Agreement. I imagine many in Great Britain would even welcome Single Market and Customs Union life compared to the hard Brexit they're experiencing now.

      The DUP have. We have to see if what is forthcoming from the two parties to the withdrawal agreement constitutes enough of a “fix” to enable the DUP to reverse themselves out of the corner they have got into. If not it will be very bad for NI, looking remotely and inadequately governed and with a failed peace process. This will hurt investment and increasingly NI will look as if it’s not working / unviable. The alternative is get the protocol working as best it can, provide the best government possible, exploit membership of both market’s to maximise investment and campaign in future that the Union as well as access to the single market is what puts NI in a better place than elsewhere for investment and jobs and it makes no sense to rock that boat.
