  • The census ordered by Caesar Augustus required families to register in their ancestral towns, leading Joseph and a heavily pregnant Mary to travel 70 miles to Bethlehem. Accommodations were scarce, as guest rooms were full due to the influx of travelers. In those days, "inns" referred to guest rooms in family homes, not commercial lodgings. Jesus was likely born in the lower level of a house or a temporary shelter, surrounded by animals. His humble birth, symbolized by being placed in a manger, emphasizes His message of humility, hope, and universal love.
The birth of Jesus also likely did not occur in year 0 but a few years earlier, around 5, 6, or 7 BCE. The calendar dates we use today were set much later by monks and religious leaders during the Middle Ages. Historical evidence suggests Jesus was probably born in the autumn, possibly during the Feast of Tabernacles, rather than in winter. Winters in Israel can be very cold, making it unlikely that the census or events described in the Bible occurred at that time. Instead, the census was more likely to happen in the spring or autumn, when many pilgrims traveled to Jerusalem (about six miles from Bethlehem).
