My Buffs played the Vols to a tie in the first game of that season and would go on to beat Notre Dame (10 - 9) in the Orange Bowl, but any of these three teams could have been national champions, that year. College football is awesome!

    • @tmarsh0307

Colorado actually had to face Chuck Webb, who was an amazing RB for UT. However, he blew his knee out the very next game vs. Pacific. I think Webb could have been the difference for UT in their tie vs. Auburn, and losses to Alabama and Notre Dame. This was an excellent UT team, but kind of underachieved that year...

@@LiquidSwords-ou7lg They screwed Holtz out of 3. 89, 91, 93. With the schedule he played, he was RIGHT on par with Saban. ND didn't play Div 2 schools....still don't. Actually, until recently, Bama hadn't beaten ND in 20 years. Until 2012. So...things are a cycle. I remember when Bama was a JOKE. Bama is all the rage NOW...their time will pass. Clemson will overtake them. ND may never win another title...who knows. We have different standards, I know...that means nothing to SEC fans, it does to us. That's why SEC players can't read or write at 20. No offense. Great players, but I CRINGE when I hear them talk....and get arrested 11 times.

@@sydIRISH I agree with pretty much everything but gotta give respect where due and I don't ever really hear of Saban's players doing stupid stuff given the atmosphere of the sec...Just cannot recall...? I could be wrong..Miss these ND teams who would go anywhere, anytime, anyplace and win on the road in hostile environments...People make fun of Navy to their peril cuz I guaran damn tee u none of those mighty sec schools want to play them....Went to the 90 and 91(nightmare) TN series and as I've said many times they are arguably the best back to back games I've ever seen in a home and away series...Just 2 incredibly coached teams--Coach Johnny Terrill Majors was a fantastic coach who I've always respected and liked.....I miss and hope TN can again become one of the dominate sec teams, so sick of bama, auburn, FL, and now GA although for some reason never minded them only cuz Vince Dooley always spoke highly of ND I guess...

This Tennessee team was a great one, no doubt! But had a few breaks gone a little differently, then they could have been National Champions. Missed a last second FG vs Auburn in a tie game, lost to Bama on the last play, and then had Notre Dame on the ropes until that INT at 46:24. What if Chuck Webb hadn't gotten hurt?

@@mongoslade277 Could you imagine a team playing Tennessee's schedule that year? 4 Top Ten teams and an Ole Miss team that came out of nowhere to challenge for the SEC Championship, and an Alabama team that had a great finish after and 0-3 start.

      That's a strong statement, given the rich and lengthy history of college football. I would rate Minnesota-Pittsburgh (1934), Notre Dame-Army (1946), Pittsburgh-Fordham (1937), Nebraska-Oklahoma (1971) and Carlisle-Harvard (1911) above this one, easily.
However, this game was a very good game with a dramatic finish, and incredibly enjoyable to re-watch.

Rick Mirer hated throwing to his 6' 7" tight end Derek Brown. Derek ran a 4.4 40 and could catch almost anything. I don't know what Mirer's problem was but it was simple incompetence not to throw to Brown 10 to 15 times a game
