- On this week's episode of @BlackQueerTownHall, @MissPeppermint247 and Bob the Drag Queen explore the topic of race. We then hear from Dr. David Green (@DiversityDocta), a Black Queer male feminist, social justice educator at Cal State LA, who discusses the importance of recovering and telling the rich and complex stories of Black Queer people in the United States. And lastly, Ebony Jewel (@ebanojoya), a former musician and designer originally from Los Angeles but now living in Mexico City, speaks about the difference in safety he feels as a Black man in Mexico vs. “The Divided States of America”.

😂
The way I *screamed* with excitement when I saw DR. David Green come across my screen! So poignant and insightful, and able to perfectly articulate so much of the, often internal and isolating, black+queer experience of living in the United States. Happy to see your immense success, David, and proud/honored to be able to even say I knew/know you!!! So excited to see and hear more from you! xoxo (go gators!)
The speed at which I clicked this in my notifications hoping it was a "RACE?!" short, only to be met with profound feelings of inadequacy for feeling disappointed that it wasn't...
Ugh!!!! Dr. Green is so good. I could listen to him speak all day. Thank you for introducing me 🙏🏼
peppermint is just so stunningly beautiful 😍
Dr. Green was my professor in grad school! Such an amazing light and person! Love him so much
Professor Green is FAB, if you have a chance to take one of his classes DO IT 🙌🏻
Speaking about oysters and the land, I would love to hear an episode on environmental justice.
Pain & Suffering are relative, so when those with privilege learn, or acknowledge, that their pain & suffering is minimal compared to marginalized groups, it causes an aversion. I hear this from cis, straight men all the time, until they are properly educated. "Oh, I have it harder because of the ridiculous standards we men created for ourselves."
It does get worse, and many of us who are extremely marginalized have endured much more than most average, cis heterosexuals, especially ones that are white. Furthermore, I think it's also troubling for them to know that those who were characterized as "weak" or "soft" are actually better equipped to handle hardship, because for most of us, it's all we've known. Cis, straight men can't handle being uncomfortable for even a day, let alone their entire lives, and they know that. The illusion of "manliness" is a lie they keep telling themselves, but it's lifting each & everyday. It isn't their standards that really matter anymore, and if "the bomb" ever drops, it'll be an insecure, cis, straight man (men) at the helm.
Woke? Psssh, I was never allowed to go to sleep.
Yesssss!
Woke has been a thing since humanity began. A person is either AWAKE to the truth, and feels the need to change attitudes and find solutions.
Or completely ignores what is going on because of their entitlement and does nothing.
Florida Rep. Angie Nixon said it best.
“America! You in danger, girl!!!”
What ebony had to say about prejudice was very interesting, and I mean that genuinely, I’d never thought of prejudice as a survival technique, but then realized I do it with straight men, it’s genuinely interesting
Thank you for this Bob! So necessary 💯💯
This is my first time watching Town Hall and wow. Peppermint was right. This episode got me thinking about new perspectives.
I took AP and accelerated classes in Mississippi and my Black classmates faced a lot of racism and division. I didn’t realize how bad it was until I went to an HBCU and learned our true worth in this world.
I took several “race/ethnicity” classes in college (2008-2012). Definitely helpful for younger me to get some additional perspective, especially in higher education. One was a humanities and two were psychology. I also took a psychology course as a senior in high school. I received a lot of internal validation, but also learned more about race/ethnicity as it affects other POCs and queer people.
I would love to hear from Bob’s aunt if she’s willing
RACE?!!!?
Wow! Both guests!!! Very good! Both provided some food for thought ♥️💯♥️💯
Thank you for providing such great resources for all! ❤
Love the podcast, aren't oysters something romans used to eat? I'm not sure if they were the first but I know they were big in oysters
Loved this but found it really annoying that Bob kept interrupting Pep at the start to keep making “jokes”
RACE???
It’s 9 am for me, I clicked so hard
8 AM right now for me looool
9:58 The aliens listened to “Earth Is Ghetto” by Aliah Sheffield as part of their research.
❌🤐🫢
ok so the soap box format from the last guy was annoying af
Thank you for mentioning "HIGH ON THE THE HOG" MISS PEPERMINT😊
1 Hour and 9 mins. Sir. Please stop. You're probably living in an apartment right now. Giving the "yt" man your money. He needs to be debated. He got on his soapbox and wasn't challenged. I agree with him that "yt" Jesus doesn't exist
Wait why can’t white people say “race?” Lol
They're talking about people coming up to peppermint in the street and referencing a meme of hers where the punchline is shouting race; and yt people doing something like that in public out of context is pretty jarring
Bloop. FINALLY I WAS FIRST MUAHAHAHAHAHAH
Outstanding guests and great discussion. Thank you all so much❤️
7:44 I believe that a majority of folks learned to value signal on a majority of these -isms but that don’t possess a deeper understanding, or a critical understanding of the -isms they learned to value signal for during the “PC” era and the cultural pendulum is swinging back in the other direction to conservatism from the liberalism of the late 90s to the early to mid 2000 we’re seeing a lot of wolves, remove their sheep‘s clothing, and to the other Black people like myself specifically black men like myself I ask you why do some of want over the oppressor just so you could be the oppressor
RACEEEE?!!!?😳
Bad guest picks tbh. Why can we never have regular Black people on these talks?
It’s too early right now for this 😂
That Doctor was so great to listen to. I could listen and learn from him all day
I miss you guys playing games 😢
So so good. Loved this. 👏
Has BOB ever apologised for allowing his part ex lovers to use racial slur words? According to multiple sources and Black drag queens, BOB has a long history of being a colourist. 👀
