I know it sounds dumb but I've always wanted to know since I was a child, what about all the animals? Our pets, our friends, our animal spirit totems, where are they in the afterlife? My 5-year-old mind couldn't understand how there was no answer for the deep connection and bond that we form with the creatures on this planet and the things we learned from them so that would be my question.
XTC can make you think in so many ways… from gentle orchestration (“Harvest Festival” to a thundering blast (“Complicated Game”) and everything in between. Simply, the best pop band since The Beatles. …so… MORE XTC!!! YAY!!!! (Thank you, Clay!!!) Finally: Your role in raising your daughter is VITAL… You might never know the complete impact you’ll have on her life, but it certainly will be sizable… and with your outlook… probably sizably positive. I’m raising my daughter with that in mind, too. Cheers!
I love this song. Sarah McLachlan recorded an unexpectedly passionate cover of it, which I highly recommend. The first song I remember hearing from XTC was "Making Plans For Nigel" from 1979, all about what it's like when someone else is deciding what you should do with your life.
I loved the smart original lyrics at the beginning and at the very end of the song. They are good. A very interesting song that I’m glad to have heard. Thank you, Clay and Lee.
Thanks Clay for this thought provoking request and for keeping great XTC music on L33's radar! This song is absolute FIRE! 🔥🤯🔥 Impressive philosophizing today, L33!... loved how the lyric "And all the people that you made in your own image still believing that junk is true" caught your attention. It shows you were truly listening... 🤔 And hooray for college radio DJ's, that's where the coolest music had to move in the 80s 🎉---- ☮❤🎶
But yes this is a great song that I have loved for a great many years since it was released and it is thought-provoking, I scoured record stores for hours back in the day to find the 12-inch of this I still have it and it's Grand. So happy to see it on the channel wish I could make premiere😢
Another courageous artistic statement for XTC to make. A song that makes a first impression but is far from being among the better XTC recordings. The subject matter invites distortion of values pertaining relevance and/or artistic importance. I do like this song, but its not among my favorites. I greatly enjoy Andy Partridge's use of words in his songs. The XTC discography is rich with great recordings.
XTC is one of my favorite bands ever. Very much overlooked in todays world. They weren’t afraid of any social topics/barriers to sing about. Nice reaction Lee!
Great song that's been on my playlist for many years. It makes you think. I've gone back and forth with believing and not believing. I agree with you that there is some sort of pattern going on. I've been realizing that there is no coincidence to things.
I too enjoyed this song as a youth and when active in my addictions it was an Anthem of sort for me as I blamed everyone but myself for my choices and bad situations in my life . I'm not looking for a religious debate with anyone just sharing MY OWN experience, however, later on relearning & relying on faith in recovery this verse spoke to me and explained some of the reasons we are where we are today in this world. #freewill. 2 Corinthians 4:4 Satan, who is the god of this world, has blinded the minds of those who don’t believe.
@Reno_Slim that's the great thing about my personal experience. It's not debatable. It's my experience not yours. Faith and trust are as real to me today as you are.
This song brings to mind all the questions I had growing up, all the whys and what ifs. One day I grew up and realized the questions, while thought provoking, had been answered in my heart long ago. For me that was enough to take the path I continue on through old age. Blessings all.
@@Grizazzle I didn't answer any question. What question? I detailed my experience. My experience is mine not anyone else's, personal and true to me. What you think or believe is yours.
When released there were many radio stations that wouldn't play this song,, But eventually over time they finally would,, Because money always wins in the end.
Shooty’s Groove covered this song around 2000. That’s how I first heard this tune. Then my Anglophile wife introduced me to XTC’s biggest albums around 2004. I was 9 when this song came out in 1986. My late wife was 18, looked like Heather Graham in License to drive, graduated high school from Bloomington IN & moved to the UK for 2 years. That’s how she met drummer Jim Capaldi from Traffic & became his bartender for 7 months.
I've always liked this song, I didn't hear it til the 90's so I was surprised it came out in the 80s. I enjoyed your commentary on this one Lee, thank you.
Man, if ever a reaction to the video was needed, it’s this one! This video is so amazing. One of my faves ever. It makes the lyrics so much more powerful.
My first time hearing this. It asks age old questions all humanity has asked in a beautiful way. Thank you, Clay for this pick. Great commentary, L33. Blessings all. Peace.
I am glad someone else has started giving you XtC tunes you should hear. I've grown quite fond of Andy's music over the years. It's become hard for me to be objective about it.
Skylarking is an amazing album. "The Man Who Sailed Around His Soul" is another great tune from the genius songwriting of Andy Partridge and XTC on this album.
One of my all-time favourite songs ever. This is what started me questioning everything I was told and being told, and led me to understand we don't NEED god, we just need to understand that we make choices and suffer consequences, so it's all up to us and all OUR fault if it goes badly.
I spent 12 years in parochial school. I left the church's teachings at around age 14 (you do the math). I find I hold my own communion best and don't require a middle-man. No one does really.
Regarding this song, I'm not worried about making God a human any more than I'm worried about making the Tooth Fairy a human. God is completely unnecessary as an explanation for anything, or as an answer to any question. There simply are no good reasons to think that any such critter exists. Free yourselves from mental slavery! There's only us.
The wonderful "good christians" in the Midwest and southern states of America threatened to bomb and dispose of presenters of radio stations that played this track, how very christ like of them.
Anthropomorphize may be the word you're looking for. Projecting human consciousness, perspective and values onto other phenomena, creatures, objects, etc. 🖖🏼😉🎶❤️🍁❤️✨️🕊
XTC is one of those bands that I've heard of can't think of any song they've done but maybe this one. What a shame. I need to do better. I thought about this song today and I'm wondering if I should show it to my younger co-worker. I think maybe not. Might be a bit too much for her at this time in her life.
Jesus said, "Ye are all sons of God." So, how do you figure that Bible quote, Lee! If you think God is NOT you, you're on the wrong track. If you think there is anything which is NOT God, you don't get it! You don't ask God questions! God asks YOU questions, with YOUR voice!
How about this the question of God is not a question that can be definitely answered so why try. I left it as something that is to big for me, so I live my life as the best person that I can be. Being a decent human being is hard enough in a cynical world. I personally think it’s egotistical to try and answer that question. I stand before the ocean and I’m grateful that it reminds me how small we are. The world and all of it inhabitants all species are inherently worthy of their place in it, trying to respect them us and all of nature is the closest thing to devotion I’ve found ☮️🌎☮️
A moving and thought provoking piece... If you could ask "God" Something, what would it be? :D
Why did you create us?
Are we alone?
Who created you?
Is this all really worth it???
I would definitely suggest watching the Official Music Video for this one. 🔥
"English Settlement" is a masterpiece!
The great Andy Partridge

A very interesting song that I’m glad to have heard.
Thank you, Clay and Lee.
Great song. And still pertinent today. And Andy P's vocals add so much to it as usual.
I never heard this before ... great song, great lyrics ... I'll be listening again
XTC "The Mayor Of Simpleton",, "King For A Day",, "Earn Enough For Us",, "Generals And Majors" & Scarecrow People"
An absolute gem...from one of the best writers ever in pop land
Senses Working Overtime, Generals & Majors, Mayor of Simpleton - all great!
The song was banned on some radio stations in the Bible Belt of the U.S.
shocking, they arent allowed to think

Cool story Lotus! ☮❤🎶

It is absolutely one of the best XTC songs.
Thank you for continuing with XTC!!!! My Holy Trinity: Yes, Genesis and XTC. ❤❤❤
A great song by one of my favorite bands of all time. Looking forward to hearing more great XTC song reactions!
Skylarking is a fantastic album. Rundgren's production is amazing. This album and Skylarking are two of their best. Keep going. Lots of material here.
I've been an XTC fan since 1981, my senior year of high school. It is a DEEP DEEP rabbit hole. Have fun, my man....!!!!!! 😃
XTC is one of my favorite bands ever. Very much overlooked in todays world. They weren’t afraid of any social topics/barriers to sing about. Nice reaction Lee!
I love when you just let the music take you where it's meant to. 😮
Rens new song premiere today 11/21 @11am PST " Slaughter House " off his new album...come show Ren some love and support ❤❤
Great song that's been on my playlist for many years. It makes you think. I've gone back and forth with believing and not believing. I agree with you that there is some sort of pattern going on. I've been realizing that there is no coincidence to things.
Amazing song and great review, Lee. Thank you for sharing.
The word you're looking for is disposable.
It's anthropomorphize. There is an XTC podcast out there that has a nice interview with the lady who did the singing.
I too enjoyed this song as a youth and when active in my addictions it was an Anthem of sort for me as I blamed everyone but myself for my choices and bad situations in my life .

2 Corinthians 4:4
Satan, who is the god of this world, has blinded the minds of those who don’t believe.
Faith is a kind of self-deception as it cannot distinguish between reality and delusion.
@Reno_Slim that's the great thing about my personal experience. It's not debatable. It's my experience not yours. Faith and trust are as real to me today as you are.

@@scottyhotty1003 That's a subjective answer to an objective question.

I really enjoyed that. ❤
XRP is much like the Beatles in that every song is important. Certainly from skylarking on to the end of their careers.
I've always liked this song, I didn't hear it til the 90's so I was surprised it came out in the 80s. I enjoyed your commentary on this one Lee, thank you.
Colin molding is the other songwriter and singer in XTC.
My favorite tunes by them are from Oranges and Lemons which is a massively wonderful album.
Skylarking is excellent. Try Summer's Cauldron segueing into Grass.
I love this band.
Peace.
Brave lyrics in the tradition of Neil Young, Lennon and Dylan.
GREAT BAND!!
Love Todd!
Only one? Why did I grow up in the environment I did. Basically Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? God as a human, scary.
Me too
Excellent album from an excellent band!
I am glad someone else has started giving you XtC tunes you should hear.

they're geniuses
Thank you.
Skylarking is an amazing album. "The Man Who Sailed Around His Soul" is another great tune from the genius songwriting of Andy Partridge and XTC on this album.
Skylarking, their finest moment, not a clunker in the lot.
TRUST ME on this one my music lovin' brother,, Timbuk 3 "Life Is Hard" (Official Music Video A MUST!!) 🔥
A genius band
This video was an MTV staple. You should check it out. What a great song, what a great band.
Prairie Prince played drums with The Tubes & Jefferson Airplane. 😁
And Journey in the very early days prior to Ansley Dunbar.
XTC, all time favorite band, first 5-6 records are killer, drums and wires is my go to.
XTC: The Beatles and Beach Boys rolled into one. Try Mayor of Simpleton (Great bass line), We're All Light, Wheel and Maypole etc etc etc
One of my all-time favourite songs ever. This is what started me questioning everything I was told and being told, and led me to understand we don't NEED god, we just need to understand that we make choices and suffer consequences, so it's all up to us and all OUR fault if it goes badly.
Love this. Try the Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead, The Smartest Monkeys, The Disappointed from the excellent Nonsuch album. Cheers
That really was thought provoking ❤
now you should check out Peter Pumkinhead from XTC. another excellent song
A favorite from the mid 80s
I spent 12 years in parochial school. I left the church's teachings at around age 14 (you do the math). I find I hold my own communion best and don't require a middle-man. No one does really.
Sarah McLachlan did an amazing cover of of this song.
Prince was the drummer for the tubes and other great bands.
bump into Todd Rundgren . . . walk away with a gigantic hit record. Happens all the time.
Where do we go when we die?
Do you remember how it was before you were born? No? It'll be just like that.

Branson
It's funny that the 'bible thumpers' grabbed onto this song at the time, until they actually listened to the lyrics...
anthropomorphize is the word.
The first time I heard this song was Circe Link;s cover. (Which i like a bit better.)

Do Dear God by Midge Ure next
Did we make GOD? And are we making the Devil (Artificial Intelligence) today?
Anthropomorphize may be the word you're looking for. Projecting human consciousness, perspective and values onto other phenomena, creatures, objects, etc.
🖖🏼😉🎶❤️🍁❤️✨️🕊
Not their “finest work,” but a solid single. Check out the albums “Drums and Wires” and “English Settlement,” and probably “Oranges and Lemons.”
Dave Gregory’s string arrangement alone propels this song well above “solid single” status.
If I was going to pose a question to God, it would be this: why the fuck are there no good reasons to think you exist?
XTC is one of those bands that I've heard of can't think of any song they've done but maybe this one. What a shame. I need to do better. Try generals and majors
You should've seen the video. Some further clues there.
Physics.
