  • I make my case about why House of the Dragon is better than Game of Thrones in hopes those who aren't watching it because of GOT trauma would consider it.
    Spoilers for Season 1.

Better than S1-S4??? Thats a tall order. Better than S5-S8? Absolutely.

I’ve been rewatching the first few seasons of GoT and without a doubt HotD is better especially with the subtle acting ques the viewer is allowed to engage with the story in. Also the nuanced characters are much more interesting than many from the original show.
Now this show wouldn’t be the success it is without the massive ground work that GoT provided and it definitely benefits from a higher budget right from the start since it’s already a proven IP.

I read somewhere that GRRM wrote ASOIAF so that it could never be made into a movie. feel like GRRM wrote Fire and Blood with the intention for it to be easier to transfer to film. Plus he wrote the book like it’s history that was written by the victor. That way the show could portray the truth of what happened. Usually watching the adaptation of a great book just makes you moan about how much better the book was. But this approach makes it so that having read the books makes watching the show even better. You finally get to see the truth, and realize that every witnesses account was false.

More like he never considered ASOIAF would be made into a movie and when he realized how many dollar signs he was missing out on- rectified this with Fire and Blood.

No way something like rhaenyra visiting kings landing would be real history. Literally zero chance. The writers just wanted to find something for her to do
Aemond killing lucerys by accident now that's well within reason

Honestly, season 1 was great and I will agree that this show has revived the franchise after the terrible ending. However, I don't think this show will be able to top the first 4 seasons of Game of Thrones, that would require something far better than the first season of the show given to us so far. Still an amazing show though but Game of Thrones was special.

I’d say season 1 is just good as any season of GOT. Season 2 tho.. it starts off slow and pacing feels weird. I liked episode 4 but was a little bor with the first 3 episodes. Just my opinion, maybe if I watch it again I’ll like it more

That kinda where I’m at too. GOT S1-5 was some of the best TV I’ve ever seen.. HOD has the potential, just cause the source material is sooo great, but the show runners would just have to make sure to execute it correctly. S1 was great, but yea so far the pacing in this season has been a little weird for me, kinda feel like they’re not doing a good job of building up the characters, like they could’ve done some more scenes of Rhenys before they killed her off. I feel like her death didn’t feel that impactful lol.. but hey, let’s see how they close out this season 🤷🏽‍♂️ I got high hopes still lol

@@clashcitycretin10 I agree that good story is better than action. I’d say the story of HOTD is only just shy of the first four seasons of GOT. The difference is when it’s said and done, assuming the show sticks the landing, it will be much better. Again, a whole show being good is better than half a show being good. GOT is unwatchable now because it’s not worth viewing knowing how bad the ending is.

I think that people feel just nostaligic...it for sure isnt the best media ever :D:D there are soo many series that are soo much better , my boyfriend for example nevr got into this.... it was just a boring medieval soap opera in his eyes :D I personally as a history student think that real history is soo much more interesting , if you study about real wars of the roses...yeah its much better than GoT

  • @Ronfost89

It is not better. It's a great show no doubt but it doesn't match up to the dialog, intrigue or characters of the first 4 seasons of GoT. It certainly has the potential to be better (will most definitely end better) but with such a small sample of the story out so far it isn't really a comparison that can me made yet. I mean in GoT the story was a civil war with characters that each had their own goals and reasons that were valid in their own minds. Making these characters related doesn't really add that much more as they weren't a close loving family torn apart, as much as a bunch of people who hated each other and want the same thing finally fighting over it.

I only watched the two first seasons of Game of thrones. It was very well made, but I didn´t like it much. At one point, I had had enough of all the sadism. But I really start to like House of the Dragon. I am looking forward to every episode. I think it balances things in a better way.

I used to think during HOTD season 1 that they might eventually reach GOT level.
However, after watching half the second season, I'm pretty sure that will never happen.
They're already rushing things and the script got way weaker.

maybe not better than first 4 seasons but deifnetly better than last 4 ...in the original GoT we had very clear heroes and villains...and in HoTD we have heroes and villains aswell but i think that heroes are more complex and villains aswell...Aegon for example is much better character than Joffrey...who was just a straight up sadist psychopath ,and Rhaenyra is much more interesting than Jon who was as pure hero as it gets , I personally like when characters are little more "grey"

HOTD is a good watch but it is severely lacking in the writing department and character development. GOT was on another level altogether and the first 4 seasons were arguably some of the best television even made. The many writers involved in HOTD are squandering opportunities to take advantage of the many plot points that could be expanded upon both in lore and character development. What we are left with is fine but slightly disappointing and getting worse with each episode. The dragons are fantastic but they're simply used as tools to make exciting battle scenes for an audience whose focus is on the spectacle of it all. I used to have watch parties for GOT and I would excitedly anticipate the next episode all week long. With HOTD, I'm like "oh yeah, I forgot this was on. I guess I'll watch for something to do on a Sunday night." Plus no Nettles and the squandered opportunity to build a back story for the Dragon seeds in general is just lazy and lame. Sorry, this is a poor take in my opinion.

HOD is better overall so far because Got seasons 4-8 were meh at best. HOD is only 2 seasons in and already we've already seen the best dragon fight of all. Also HOD doesn't depend much on cheesy shock value and makes us interested in the story through great writing instead. GOT had too many sociopathic characters which is lazy writing. Where as HOD has extremely selfish characters and a couple of them with some sociopathic traits but they are 3 dimensional and show other sides to them.

On the contrary, hotd is suffering from the same weaknesses that made the later seasons of got insufferable.
Characters are teleporting around with no realism how long their travels should take them.
The world feels empty and disconnected, the scenes essentially just tick off boxes, the show presents itself like a Wikipedia article, superficial and no depth.
The vast majority of characters are one dimensional and flat, and don’t even start with the identity politics that they had to shove in…
