I used to be a cable jointer, to fit an earth wire to the cable, the best way is to strip back both steel tape armours, clean off the bituminous impregnated paper off the lead sheath. You then tie the earth wire to the sheath and using a blow torch and D metal you plumb the earth wire to the lead sheath and the other end goes into an earth block. Another method was to change the iron clad cut out for a new plastic modern one and the earth wire then went into the earth block connector on the new cut out. We used to strip these cables live by cutting off the lead sheath and then getting to the cores that were only covered in paper tape.

My last neighbour called me around after they had a kitchen refit. MCB would not turn on for kitchen ring. All sockets in kitchen were dripping wet after tiling. So I pulled them all out to dry out. Next day when they were tidy and dry I put the sockets back in. MCB happy again. Noticed new mini strip lighting under wall units...wondered where they were powered...no plugs. Bell wire from the back of the cooker. Neighbour said leave it...they were professional kitchen fitters...they must know what they are doing. Absolutely flabbergasted.

As a retired sparks of 50 years I have the exact same consumer unit in my house ,its a split board and the 2 rcds and mcbs come with the board ,the problem comes when An mcb develops an earth fault it will trip the rcd therefor disconnecting everything else covered by that rcd .so that sparks swapped the mcbs to rcbs so an earth fault on an individual circuit will only trip that circuit and not multiple circuits but he should have spotted that there was no main earth cable

I agree. Not a risk I'd take. That said, a pal of mine who works for the board did the same thing as a temporary fix for me years ago. Shaved off a bit of the lead sheath & replaced the clamp that was on there for a braided TNS connection. Thing is, he'd worked for the board for many years & was qualified to work on it. I've since paid to have the meter relocated outside & they put in a TN-C-S earth. I do not recommend anyone tries this fix, even as a temporary measure!

Lead is a much softer metal so if you over tighten you can easily crush the live cables within. Same reason why you don't use them to earth the steel sheath on SWA. Or maybe I'm wrong? @@steverobinson8170 The DNO will charge for a PME connection, unless there is an existing TNS or TN-C-S that they installed, in which case they're responsible for maintaining it. I'm also DNO. It's possible different regions have different policies on this though.

Call the DNO to provide a proper earth. Of the lead sheath, not the armour :-)

Tiled floor AND a laminate floor.... my worst nightmare .. however, having bad readings on most of the cables whilst disconnected from each other does seem a bit odd.

Your a brave man messing with that PILSSWA.
Well done for sorting it but me personally I'd have batted that right back to the DNO.

What on earth is going on with that left hand RCD being used as as a connector block? It looked like there was a neutral joined to the phase of the 32a breaker next to it...

That clamp may come loose over time, or high resistance over time especially if lead jacket. Need an earth rod as well.

I'm not an electrician, so have no idea what you said. But, from how it looked in the consumer unit I guess it was really really bad.
