Hi James, I'm currently using a Gitzo ballhead which is coming along with the tripod whilst I'm looking for a geared head for heavier photography gears e.g. 5DsR, GFX 50R ... , your illustration is hitting on what exactly I need, thankyou.
I’ve a ball head on my travel tripod. I don’t like it much. As you’ve said it doesn’t facilitate fine adjustments and it also can be floppy. On my main tripod I use a 3-axis pan & tilt head. Like the geared head it’s heavier, slower to use but - because each axis is individually adjusted - much more precise. Cost wise it’s nowhere near as expensive as a geared head. A little more difficult to make very fine adjustments but essentially it shares all the advantages over a ball head that you describe for the geared head.
Yeah its the geared part that really helps with architectural photos for me. Finely adjusting the compositions on the back of the LCD. Thanks for watching 😊
Choices, choices...Verdict, get both along with an extra tripod that way your bases are covered. No switching out heads on one tripod. I primarily use my gear head for architecture, interiors, things of that nature and than the ball head for travel. Easier to travel with and pack away on a back pack. Great video. Well done.
A quick comparison on ball vs geared heads as promised! Anything I missed?
Hello James.Thank you very much - as always very useful information. 4:25 Rogeti is fantastic - Professional level!
Yeah for sure. I would love to get my hands on one and their brackets as well!
