Competition is healthy in a squad. Most of our bench last season suffered from not getting much game time due to consistency the first 11 put out. But that’s a healthy environment. With champions league that will open up more opportunities for those players on the bench to get out on the field either during cup or league matches. I do suspect it’ll be Tonali, Bruno, Joelinton, Willock and possibly almiron in midfield. But ultimately depends who else we sign.

I feel like Bruno actually gets dropped from CDM before Longstaf is dropped from CM. We arent going to drastically change our style or playing staff in 1 window to the extent that Longstaff is no longer one of our most important and influential players in the Howe system. 80?!?! It was £55m! I get that this was before it was official but that is a wild exaggeration of the price!
I don't think Howe will change the system, I think Tonali will take Longstaff's position- he is obviously an upgrade technically and we needed someone else who can do his role. When Sean was injured last season we saw how important he was in that team. Tonali has that engine and box to box ability that is needed to play that role but with (hopefully) far fewer silly little mistakes (Longstaff is a good player but very prone to making errors on very simple passes and touches).
We still badly need more in attack. I'm seriously against selling ASM- especially to sign Barnes who I don't consider a significant improvement on what we have.
The Chiesa rumours are incredibly exciting though!
