When my kids were little we did strawberries, the best crops for us were in pots up on the deck, plus, we could easily check them everytime we went in and out and grab them up before critters came. It was nice to see the kids playing outside seeing a strawberry and munching it up 😁 I miss having littles around.
As much as it was a lovely tour I've had to pause it and lie down from the motion sickness 😂 Beginner gardening is all about mistakes, more mistakes than successes. We can read all the books and watch all the videos but just trying is how we learn :) You've done a great job so far!
In the new cleared space I would suggest looking into a "permaculture" watering style where it has a natural drainage slop that can flow water down.. seeing if that is possible with that area could be beneficial.

My first year with strawberries, we had the same issue. Getting them off the dirt should help! Straw, landscape fabric, something! I used straw and it worked! 😊
Heya lovely, when I first started gardening I grew everything on my windowsill as it was the only space I had with no greenhouse and most of mine were leggy, so I just planted them deep in the soil and they came out perfectly fine I couldn't even tell! Corn is a heavy feeder, you can top dress(on top of the soil) with fertilizer to help it grow. Mulch and a little perlite in the baskets will help them retain some moisture in the heat.
So inspiring! I love watching your garden as I’m trying to figure out my garden this past Spring as well. It’s definitely challenging. I just keep saying that this is my practice garden.
We didn't have any success with strawberries until we put mesh over the top of them to keep the birds away. Our crops were bountiful after that. I did feel sorry for the birds after that, so I fed them bird seed on the other side of the garden. My consciousness was cured..
Absolutely agreed - have to net strawberries if they’re going to ripen enough for the best flavour. The birds will always take them a day or two before they’re perfect to our palette.
You're doing great!! Make sure you check the expiration date on seed packets when you buy them. I'm not sure what your climate and soil those is... but grow mulch works great. Don't give up on those seedlings! We all live and learn. Look at it this way... you aren't failing as a gardener... you are having fun!!!💞💞

I was quite proud of it! And then, I swear, it has been one thing after another! Constantly researching what was attacking it! Lack of nutrients, too many nutrients, the amount of sun and water its getting, pests(lots of them), and disease. I had almost given up hope again and then I saw your post about Roots & Refuge! I'm glad it's not just me...I live in the same town and was distraught about why the easiest flowers were just doing terrible 😭...so it's obviously the soil and I'm starting to understand why I don't see many flowers in the ground in our area!
You have a long enough growing season that you should be able to directly sow your seeds into the soil for a second harvest! Way less work and the seedlings come up so nicely😊
This year in Quebec the weather was HORRIBLE, too much wind, only a month of hot weather and too much rain. I had no tomatoes, no cucumbers, no beans, well I have son few harvest, in past years it has been almost 4b moths of great weather but this year sadly my harvest has been low.

My mom and I run a cut flower farm here in SC and I definitely think your idea about the soil being the culprit is spot on!! Are you planning on doing a soil test? I know that helps us a lot, but the heat here is just killer for sure when it comes to growing anything! You are doing a fantastic job and you're such an inspiration ❤❤ love your channels so so much 🥰 -jennalee
Your strawberries may have been June bearing and not ever bearing variety. That’s probably a normal amount of pumpkins for that variety per plant but you should have enough growing days before first frost to grow more pumpkins. Consistency in watering is the key to success with melons, tomatoes etc. Your garden still looks great for the end of July. Don’t give up you’ve learned a lot.
I know this was probably filmed a little while ago but if you haven’t already pulled your zucchini plants, you might not have to unless you want to. I have found that sometimes mine will take extremely long breaks from producing. And just clipping that all of the dead and yellow leaves and continuing to take care of them or sometimes spark them to have new growth from the center of the plant and produce more!
You probably already know but with the strawberries if you leave them for more than about 5 days from when they are ripe then they will go rotten and if they rot then the plant may think it has finished and ripen up the strawberries and not produce anymore
Second year gardener here and I'm feeling like last year was beginners luck! I wish I could take what I've learned and start fresh half way through the season...Being patient is the hardest part for me!
I tried growing Melos and pumpkins. I discovered they needed more space than I had to give them. For your cut flower garden could you maybe get a load of topsoil? I’d use a cultivar on your existing soil first as it appears to be very tightly packed before putting the topsoil down.
Cherry tomato plants give me the most horrific allergies. Have you checked if they don't do the same to you? Beautiful and inspiring garden! As well as your attitude towards it! Thanks.
I live in a different climate but for us we always consider squash and zucchini and pumpkins a later harvest which for us is like end of August since we start getting frost by September if not earlier. Maybe that would have helped your pumpkins if they were just heat sensitive 🤔 I'm definitely not an expert I'm just learning myself.

Your daliha's may have been to dried out or too wet when you planted them - hence the not growing in the cutting garden. I had notice when you got ready to plant them that you soaked them in water...is there a reason you did this? I think this may have made them too wet when you planted them and then watered them. Which would have rotted them out before they could grow. Sunflowers like to be dry and love the heat. Beets, lettuce all like cooler weather. The proven winners basil is ok if it bolts. The taste shouldn't change with that variety. I am rather new at veg gardening myself and the few things I did share with you... I learned from Laura at Garden Answer or other research. I do know things like strawberries amd squash don't do well after it gets hot. Could be this maybe the case for yours since you had said how hot it was there. We have huge strawberry crops here and festivals. I know they start baring here about April and as we get into June they begin to die out depending on the weather. Hope this helps for next years crop.
You appear to enjoy learning from your mistakes and your garden cannot help but continue to improve. You've done really well for your first year. No gardener has 100% success in any year. Sometimes, things just don't "do riiight." You can amend the soil in the entire new garden area and/or you can do "no dig" gardening for everything but the trees. And did you know that you can buy ladybugs, from Amazon even, to help control certain pests? (Plus, kids seem to enjoy playing with them!)
Would you ever consider building a greenhouse to reduce the risk of damage from bugs, over watering etc. Also there are really cool spliced apple trees where each branch grows a different type of apple might be something to look into they are more expensive but you get more variety for the least amount of trees.
Just reading this made me remember a tree my parents had, it grew three different fruits. They bought it kinda as a silly thing, but that darn thing thrived like crazy and made different fruits in layers around the tree! And not all at the same time. It was cool. They got such a kick out of it!
I think your gardening is amazing. You have done a tremendous job. Can’t believe you are a beginner. Could you let the chickens run free through your gardens for a bit each day to eat the bugs? Is that a thing? ❤️ 🇨🇦
I don't know what kind of soil fruit trees need, but I would look into that before you start planting, so you can do any amendments necessary. It would be such a shame to spend all the time and money on planting fruit trees, only to have them die for lack of appropriate soil. You've probably already thought of all that, but I just wanted to mention it in case 🙂
Still super impressive 👌🏽❤️I’m curious to know… if the plan is to put the orchid in that area, is there still open land available for if we eventually manage to convince Ashleigh to move onto the property ?😂😂
i GIVE YOU ALOT OF CREDIT!! the goat thing would get to me. But that bush blooming is so funny. Next year will be different like they always are. later Joyce
You are doing great for a beginner! Don't give up. Strawberries don't like to be on the soil. That could be why they are rotting. Usually, you mulch them with straw to keep them off the soil. Check out Garden Answers here on RUclips. Laura is a wealth of knowledge and has a video for just about everything you can think of.
Showing the good ,bad and the ugly! The heat has messed up a lot of our crops, this is how you learn, We can help you as you go along, now that the comments are on.
Thank you for your videos, always enjoy them and also the gardening tours. I have a mommy RUclips channel and would love to interview you on their sometime 🌻
Can you eat the leggy sprouts as SPROUTS on sandwiches or in salads? At least then they wouldn’t be a waste. And I know you’re a little disappointed in how things turned out, but I think that you had so much success. It’s your first garden, and you produced food your family ate! That’s amazing. Try those strawberries that hang next year. Then they’d be off the ground and away from some of the bugs. Maybe you’ll get more edible fruit from them. I love the little pumpkins, so cute. And honestly, I think that most watermelon growers cut off fruit that isn’t doing great, so that the plant’s energy is spent on the big beautiful fruits that are thriving. They go for quality over quantity. But I really think your garden turned out great. You’re way to hard on yourself my perfectionist friend. Before you know it you will be an expert, at least in your own garden. You’ll figure out what grows great and what doesn’t. Like you said, live and learn!
Hey Angela, do you watch roots and refuge farm? Maybe it’s called Roots and refuge Homestead? It’s a great RUclips channel to watch for gardening. The woman who does it is extremely knowledgeable and helped me out big time! Also, that’s totally awesome that you got for pumpkins half of one player! The most I have ever gotten off of only one plant is two. 💚

With your strawberries put straw on top of the soil to keep the berries off the soil. Your garden is looking awesome, well done :-)
Next year will be different like they always are. later Joyce
What fruit trees are you going to plant ? The fresh fruit is nice ! Apples, oranges, peaches , nuts -
Don't forget! You can make green fried tomatoes! Yum!
With the green ones of course, if have any issues or something. Can catch em while there green. I'm sure there's other green tomato recipes too
What about letting the chickens in to take care of the bugs? Will they eat all your plants too?

Did the corn end up doing well?
Khu vườn của c đẹp quá ạ.💓💓💓
You are doing great for a beginner! Don't give up. Strawberries don't like to be on the soil. That could be why they are rotting. Usually, you mulch them with straw to keep them off the soil. Check out Garden Answers here on RUclips. Laura is a wealth of knowledge and has a video for just about everything you can think of.
Your garden is very impressive for a first timer, be proud Angie! 💚🌽👩🌾
Have you considered investing in a greenhouse at some point?
Your soil in your seedlings look a little dry. Also try using a fan on them..it will imitate wind which will strengthen the stems
the seedlings is because you need to lower your lights!
Strawberries are sometimes pestered by pigeons early in the morning.. :)
Garden Answer on RUclips is an awesome channel for all things gardening 👩🏻🌾🪴🥒🍓🍉🌶🥕🧅🫑🫐🍎🍋🍊🥔🌻🌼🌸🌺🌷🌱🌳🌿
Are your parents still going to build or put a house on your land?
Don’t tell me they watered in the rain?
What kind of pepper plant is that pepper tree? I would love one for my kitchen…. Because Canada and I can’t grow peppers outside for the life of me.
I would guess it’s an ornamental Thai chili!
I have that looks like it called nu mex twilight.
Yes I second that! Jess is so very knowledgeable and kind to beginner gardeners
Yes! She’s actually moving very close to me so I’m hoping I can take in person classes when they offer them!
Yes she is brilliant!
