I keep seeing this video.….. So, here I am… anyway, I own one of these 12s... Very nice reel indeed...! It casts a long long way… but it can be very unruly at times.. because, in free spool mode, it spins forever.….. I've learned quite a bit about mags on reels that are worth casting long distances in the surf…… they all need mags either static mag or a knobby mag to get any impressive distance… although this reel is not typical for the surf it cast like a dream when you have a mag to mitigate your casts down to a 1click off from optimum settings…. and don't forget to get Abec 7 bearings.… now you have a rocket launcher with a 12’ fast action surf stick… It was designed as a small tuna reel... 👍😎👌
I have used over 25 pounds regularly. To mske your srgument usless tell me why spinning reels have 40+ pounds of drag then, and the high dolllar spinning reels with high drag rattings sell fairly well.
Your suppose to set your drag at 1/3 of your line size. Idk about people in Florida and stuff but on the west coast we use star drags for casting surface irons and we use 40lb test for that. With 40lb you should be setting your drag at around 13lbs of drag so 25lb isn't at all necessary.. Plus rods are made to fish at a certain line class and they expect you to set the drag at 1/3rd of the line rating.
@@jandhtackle not exactly. Let's break these reels down. Trinidad, Gear material: Brass Body Material: Cold Forged Aluminum Anodizing: EI surface coating Tesoro, Gear material: 17-4 Heat treated Stainless Steel gears (highest possible quality still maintaining corrosion Resistance) Body: 6061 T6 aluminum (Aircraft Grade) Anodizing: Type 2 and 3 The Tesoro is your best choice, it's not as smooth but will last 5x as long as a Trinidad.
The gear material in the Tesoro is 17-4 heat treated Stainless steel, that's the highest quality there is also being corrosion resistant. The Trinidad has Brass gears. They will wear very quick. The body material is also better in the Tesoro along with Anodized Tesoro: 6061 T6 aluminum (Aircraft Grade) Trinidad: Cold forged standard aluminum. The Tesoro is better in every way.
Once people figure out that okuma makes better reelsthan Shimano , with higher quality components They’re gonna feel real stupid for buying Trinidad and Tranx’ just because they’re trendy
This is false. The Trinidads anodizing is absolutely garbage along with every other reel with ei surface coating. This one has more drag, stronger materials (6061 T6 aluminum and 17-4 heat treated gears). a lot more quality was put into this reel. The Trinidad is only smoother, other than that it's all crap.
Far from it, okuma killed their chances of competing with the trinidad by choosing to have a single backup dog and revert from a keyed drag washer stack that would push the drag capability over the trini. The gear material is better in the tesoro but what does it matter if the antireverse fails on you.
@@shit2fly that's bs. The Tesoro has a single dog with a ratchet made of 17-4 SS and I'm pretty sure the dog too. That is extremely strong and will last forever. And they added a backup Roller bearing in case it does fail. Now that's out of the way compare quality and your ganna understand the Tesoro is a beast.
@@fadelover123 You can go ahead and trust it, a budget reel like a fathom star drag has an Arb + 2 ar friction dogs. The tesoro is their flagship, they reverted from the cedros' design. And besides, I bottom fish with my cedros with no issues. I'm not going to chance locking down, i wouldn't be able to turn the handle either way given that gear ratio. They tailored the tesoro as a wahoo bomb/kingfish reel.
@@shit2fly I fish so cal, we use these for Surface Irons, poppers and plugs. I have pulled on a lot of fish with mine, I've fished fathoms, Talicas, toriums, and many other reels. Almost every high end reel out there. The Tesoro is a beast, among the best. The Anti reverse does not need 2 dogs in this reel because there is no need for it. There is a super strong roller bearing and if that fails you got your dog, the dog looks bulky as hell, I doubt it will fail. Okuma Makairas vs Talicas is easy, I had Tac 12 and 16s, the Makaira casts better, has more torque, has better quality, and basically everything else. No problems with any of my Okumas. Love them all, haven't had one fail on me yet
@@shit2fly Doesn't matter when Okuma uses quality stuff. Trinidad internals are pot metal. They bend and chip like old plastic. You probably think Accurates aren't good either because they don't have a backup dog. If you have hook a fish and it slips the IAR and breaks the backup dog, you are not catching it. You are obviously an internet fisherman with no actual experience. Wouldn't trust someone who can't even capitalize proper nouns.

👍😎👌
True.
I want I higher end star drag reel with a high drag output. I cannot find anything over 25. What’s the reasoning behind that?
B Mahone because 25 lb is pretty much all you need. Any more than a 2 speed reel suits better.

take a look at the new accurate tern star drag, the're putting out something like 30lbs of drag...

Do you know how to purchase the 120mm that’s sold separately?
I wonder how well it stacks up next to the Trinidad.

Will this reel be available in left hand
Not sure.
Can I use it for tuna fishing in the 150 range?
Yes. Just fill it with Maxcuatro.

SAME as What MAKAIRA Did to TALICA!!!
My pops has this, the Trinidad is way better for this type of reel IMO
Trini is 2x as expensive. A more accurate, fairer, similarly-priced comparison would be the Shimano Torium series vs this reel.
