Yeshua Hamashiach is God in the flesh, the Son of God, the Word of God, and he died so that you may be presented blameless in the sight of the Father. And so you may inherit his kingdom. There is an alternate ending where Sydney asks Grant to "kiss" her, which leads to her death. Grant then reads off the obituaries of Laurel-Ann, Sydney, and Mendez (despite him not being dead). Grant becomes infected through the word "paper", but at the very end utters "trap"
Some people theorize that the post credit scene was actually Grant and Sydney - it's possible that they survived the firebomb and started living new lives with their new made-up language. The scene might just be them doing some acting or something.
I heard the actor that plays Grant wanted a positive ending which is why we got that after credits scene. After the summery I think the virus was caused by the French which is why they killed Grant and Sydney. Before even the police react to the incident a large truck likely military passes by Grant possibly leaving Pontypool.
Pontypool feels like a visual podcast, if that makes any sense. And it works so well. The fact the virus is spread through certain words and you can't tell which ones until the infected start repeating them is chilling, and also the fact that terms of endearment are figured out first as vectors on Valentine's Day, when those run rampant, is also horrifying. And the part where the kids call and Sydney is frantically trying to calm them down... of course a loving mother would thoughtlessly use terms of endearment to her frightened children. It really highlights how we use language and what words we use without realizing it.
I remember watching Pontypool one time with my older brother when I was kid and this whole time it seemed like a fever dream...It just didn't make sense to me at the time but now being 26 it's really good for what it was! The MC's voice always got to me and still seems so smooth and deep
The opening few minutes of this movie just immediately grabbed my attention. Hearing Stephen McHattie's smooth voice repeating the snippet of words was such an eerie, but enthralling introduction that managed to peak my attention. It's a minimalistic film, but executes everything pretty damn well. So cool to see James cover this 😄
when you mentioned it would’ve been a radio play, I couldn’t help but think of it as a stage play instead. Something like… a blackbox theater, the one room, with sound design being the only thing that makes it clear what is happening outside of the room. Or a normal theater, still pretty dependent on great sound design, but with audience plants, who pick up on words in the play itself. Could even choreograph times for them to rush the stage at relevant points. godddd, now I wanna see that!!!!
This is genuinely one of my favorite modern horror films of all time. It was such a unique approach to zombie horror and I loved how absolutely terrifying the atmosphere was. Only one scene of the horde but you know it's a nightmare outside of the building, with an admittedly odd ending. Still, I watched this movie over and over again in college.
Pontypool has one of my favorite “pandemic” ideas honestly, this idea of hearing a word, getting stuck on it, and then having your brain basically invert on itself as the “idea” of that word consumes you and you struggle to communicate what is both knowable and unknowable until you go rabid… I (personally) didn’t have any trouble following the invented logic of the word virus but some suspension of disbelief is always needed in these sorts of films. It sells itself well and commits to its concept strongly. Because without that conviction it’s very easy for this film to be schlocky B-fare.
And I love schlocky B-fare so that’s not an insult, it’s just a testament to the hard work the cast and crew put into making their world lived in and believable.
Also, in the fictional SCP universe, the logic of this type of virus is so common it actually has a name. It's a memetic hazard, which is something that spreads like a virus through information, like through infected spoken language. H.P. Lovecraft arguably also used this concept, since in his stories, mere knowledge of certain forbidden truths could cause insanity and even physically alter people
Yeah, this movie truly gets you paranoid everytime you for whatever reason repeat a word to yourself a bunch of time until it loses meaning. You ever do that? Repeat a word to yourself so much it loses meaning for a moment?
22:42 that's how it feels to have a stutter, the frustration is also accurate. A stutter isn't limited to repetition of letters or words. Blocks also exist where we're unable to say particular sounds, the one I consistently struggle with is GL. Glass, glue, glacier, English, glucose etc.
This was one of the creepiest Kill Counts I've seen. I usually don't get creeped out while watching this but this movie struck a nerve (nerve...nerve...etc)
Great idea. Not like that very thing could easily be turned around on the channel itself. With that train of thought, what would stop people from calling bullshit on anything he says, ripping him a new one for no reason or just straight-up lying about what he said? "It's my comment" after all. The people who rely on "it's my content, so I can do what I want", are usually asshats, who don't wanna deal with consequences or set down clear rules, that keep people informed and interested; don't make James an asshat.
The obituary scene is my favorite part. I get that visually, it isn’t gory but the monologue that plays over it is so cheeky and fun. I love dark humor and that scene is a great example of it. Plus, it’s a very unique joke.
There is a golden rule in video entertainment: Show, Dont Tell. If you want an scene to hold impact and emotion, you show what happens in that scene, dont verbally tell it. This rule is the reason why scenes like Uncle Ben's death in Spiderman works while the infamous "Somehow Palpatine Returns" doesnt at all. Somehow Pontypool manages to overcome this rule through great acting, and thats quite impressive.
There also a basic rule for life : eat with your mouth and not your arsehole. It just won't have the same effect, plus you will look like an idiot trying to cram a foot long up there
But the "Show, don't tell" is a rule for certain elements. Other elements needs the words to understand. And even then, elements who are known to be shown needs to be told too to be understood.
What I like about this movie is that it sounds like a potential SCP story, especially since this virus acts like a cognitohazard and/or a memetic agent Current headcanon is that it wasn’t the government or the military who firebombed our last characters, it was Mobile Task Force Eta-10 “See No Evil”
someone might've already mentioned this, but the deep, smooth voice fluctuating between calmly reading normal things (a missing cat) and talking about apocalyptic stuff reminds me of Welcome to Night Vale
Honestly, there are so many movies that were covered on the Kill Count that I never knew before. It’s helped expand my knowledge about horror, and also introduced me to some of my new favorite movies!
Words can't interpret how brilliant this film prevails. I'm glad that it's getting a kill count on the channel finally, as I feel this movie is a bit underrated. This movie is as if Noam Chomsky and Wittgenstein made a horror movie together.
This is the second time I’ve found a movie through Dead Meat and regretted not watching it first (the other was Host). This coverage was so good I immediately consumed all the Pontypool content I could. I did give the radio play version a listen and it has a different ending than the movie so I recommend it if you’ve accidentally become obsessed with this movie like I did.
I watched this movie one late night during a cold evening with heavy rain and wind. I was alone since my parents left after visiting for a bit and my friend was away. It really gave the atmosphere of this movie a huge kick and gave me chills all through out. I'm so glad James added this great little gem, it's one of my favorite movies and although not like the same as first viewing, I still come back and watch it now and then.
Same. I really love the listening value of this movie! The baby man scene and the kettle scene scares me a lot even with just the audio, while the final words of mister Mazzy is still that cathartic! This movie is quite great to listen to while making digital pictures!
I feel that the concept is pretty interesting and scp like, plus James gives movies a wider audience so in a way he spreads the popularity of the films he coves creating fans and also I am huge fan Roanoke!
So cool to this movie on the Kill Count having grown up in Southern Ontario my whole life (and I used to live pretty to close to the real Pontypool)! I first saw this movie as a kid and though I absolutely did not understand it, I still thought it was really scary and atmospheric and weird, and probably influenced my ongoing love for nonsensical horror to this day. I still think that the scene where the assistant is mimicking the kettle is still one of the most unnerving horror movie scenes ever. Always awesome to see smaller (and Canadian!) movies on the Kill Count, and looking forward to a Ginger Snaps video if you ever decide to do it!
So I didn't know where to go to say this but dead meat is probably one of the best channels to learn about anything horror. The detail and research they put into everything really pays off for some amazing videos. The reason I post this is that recently I've been enjoying all the dead meat podcast with you and your wife and I think for the next one y'all should talk about mad god. I think it's a great movie and I would love to hear what you have to say and also if you understand what is going on. Keep doing what you do dead meat fam. Can't wait for the next podcast.
I remember watching this with my mom one night because we thought the description sounded really interesting. We were goofing on it at first but it ended up being really eerie and good! Just like when we watched The Mist, we were laughing at it until we weren't and we were pleasantly surprised by these movies.
For years I thought this film was just a strange, transient, fever dream. After watching this I am CERTAIN it is a strange, transient, fever dream. *With 28 beautifully counted kills*
I found this movie like 7 or 8 years ago right as I was discovering my love for horror, and it’s definitely a big reason I’ve fallen down this bloody rabbit hole… Glad to see it get some love!
I saw this when I was 9 and got so scared I didn’t watch it again till I was 20. I absolutely love it now though but that song of the boy on the phone fucking haunts me 😂
Similar concept in Metal Gear Solid V with a virus that turns people into mindless ghouls/superheroes with the main vector of transmission being through language
Movies like this are a reason why the kill count is awesome. We all love the big budget movies but when you get a hidden gem like this that you never would have heard of otherwise, it’s perfect.
When I was very ill years ago, I went through a period where words would just get lost between my brain and mouth. Word association games brought me back. This movie actually makes perfect sense to me.
TBH, I'm reading that Sydney and Grant did NOT die and that last bit shows them surviving - that post credits scene is apparently switching between monochrome and colour to suggest that they are surviving under the aliases Johnny Deadeyes and Lisa the Killer both in their real identities and as part of a radio improv performance (the colour being the reality, monochrome being the play)
I was living in Pontypool when I saw this movie. No joke - the old railyard house they used for some of the exterior shots was right across the road from the only restaurant in town, and you had to drive to Lindsay to hit a grocery store. So cool seeing a film set and filmed in your own town.
I've seen this movie 6 or 7 times and never knew there was a post credits scene, I love this movie it's weird but also love how unique it is there's nothing like it, also love how it's one of those movies where it leaves it to your imagination what's happening because then you can imagine it being way more gruesome than it maybe was. I'm glad it made it to a Kill Count hopefully now more people will watch it.
I absolutely love Pontypool! So happy you did this one! Been one of my favorite horror movies since I first watched it back in 2012. Also, that after credit scene…lot to unpack there :)
This was one of the movies that we covered in a Horror Film class I took at the University of Toronto, had heard of all of the movies except this one and was pleasantly surprised.
James i have been watching you for years, i believe the first video i watched of yours was the second friday the thirteenth, i actually switched from carnage counts to you. It makes me so happy that you cover not only big mainstream movies but also smaller lower budget not well known movies like this. Thank you for allowing me to watch summaries and kills.
I'm sad you weren't able to get into the whole, "the signal is coming from an eldritch being unaware of what its doing" aspect, but thank you for covering this Gem, happy Canada day!
this seems like such an awesome movie. it’s rare that after a kill count i’m super motivated to watch a movie (partially because i’ve seen the movies already or i was just never gonna watch them) but this one seems so cool and unique i can’t wait!
I love how odd this movie is and how much weirder the books are I also find this movie incredibly analogous to my ADHD and how hard it can be to use words at times
Boyd Banks is also in The Dawn of the Dead Remake and Romero’s Land of the Dead, two movies I absolutely can’t wait to see covered on this show, whenever that happens, no rush James
@@PisstachioDisguisey I would also absolutely love to see 28 days/weeks later on DM, i’m a huge fan of zombie movies and how each one differs from previous creations
Oh I just realized he was also in the first Harold and Kumar movie as the gunshot wound patient who gives Harold and Kumar directions to White Castle literally right after Kumar operated on him.
Really psyched to see James cover this, especially since it doesn't neatly fit the Kill Count rules. I remember Stephen McHattie from "A History of Violence" and (I think) "Shoot 'Em Up." Not just his voice but his face really holds your attention.
I think there is something really amazing about the writing and sound design of this movie. I remember the first time I watched it and feeling just this overwhelming sense of dread. That's not something I've ever felt with another movie. That's a big reason why it's one of my favorites
It's awesome! I put it on to watch through dinner, ended up watching it back-to-back and staying up until dawn. Wish they would have left the hallucination scene in, would have worked better.
@@RealBradMillerYeah the hallucination scene is kinda out of nowhere, but it fits in a weird way. Like Mazzy is questioning reality as things make less and less sense. Plus his face when he comes up from under the desk is just amazing lol!
Yeah! The baby man scene, the kettle scene and the final monologue of mister Mazzy never ceases to give me goosebumps whilst only listening to the audio of the movie!
I saw Pontypool in a Lit class when I was in college. It's a very interesting, unique idea to have language be the element of infection. Definitely a movie like no other.
@らてちゃん I actually know what youre talking about and I agree. Everything overall is a big forward leap quality wise, but its gonna take some getting used to after 4 years.
The end credits sequence alludes to both of them surviving the film and living undercover as new identities. There's also a spin-off film, Bruce McDonald's Dreamland (2019), that's based off of it.
@@UnluckyConqueror Thats awesome dude. I honestly never bothered because I just didn't think it was the "kind of film" they usually do Kill Counts. More of a Podcast video I always thought. Color me surprised!!
So glad to see such an underrated film covered. I saw this movie years ago and it's so good to see more people learn about it. Also been too tired and overworked to watch your last two Kill Counts so this is my first glimpse of the new set! Absolutely love it, think it looks so good. Watching this as I relax before bed, great work as always!
Dude same here, I started a new welding gig a few weeks ago, and even tho it's 4 10s, I have to wake up at 4:30 and then I get back home at like 5, and I've just been completely beat tbh, I really dig the new set too tho lol
These videos have gotten me through so much. I love watching these videos when I feel down, because James always sounds so upbeat regardless of the movie he is covering. These are always so good. Thank you for doing what you do. It impacts more people than you probably realize❤️
Yessssss! This is my absolute favorite obscure horror movie. I eventually subject every person in my life to Pontypool. Super psyched to see it covered!
Never would have found this movie without Dead Meat. But I went out and watched it after the trailer last week and holy crap I loved this movie! Thanks for the recommendation, James!
I listened to the postcast/radio show version of this back in my first year of university! It is great to see it on the screen and covered on the Kill Count!
Would love to see more horror movies where the horror aspect itself takes place off-screen, with the movie focusing on the characters itself, taking a break every once in a while to remind us that yes, this is still a horror movie.
I really liked this film. It was actually one of the tensest, most frightening movies I've ever seen. The only problem is that I was kind of confused as to how the virus was transmitted, and how they managed to cure it, but the ambiguity of how to contract the virus actually made it more frightening. Also, yeah, I have no idea what that post-credits scene is about. Anyway, one day James should have a video in which he explains the Kill Count rules in depth, if he hasn't already.
As a canadian myself, i'd love to thank you very much. Canadians and americans arn't as different as some may think, and i'm glad you made this kill count. Your work is amazing james, live your flannel, sorry, I mean, I channel your love. uh....
I love this movie so much. I would have never thought to have seen y’all cover this and I have been telling so many people to watch this. I thought it was going to be so boring when I first heard about it and I was dead wrong.

The people who rely on "it's my content, so I can do what I want", are usually asshats, who don't wanna deal with consequences or set down clear rules, that keep people informed and interested; don't make James an asshat.
Yeeeeeeeeee

I think the genius here is that it you don't even need to watch, you can listen and let your imagination run wild like old radio shows!
There also a basic rule for life : eat with your mouth and not your arsehole. It just won't have the same effect, plus you will look like an idiot trying to cram a foot long up there
Offscreen, bad.
I agree but the one exception to that rule is Quint's USS Indianapolis speech in Jaws. Tell, don't show works better in that case.
But the "Show, don't tell" is a rule for certain elements. Other elements needs the words to understand.
And even then, elements who are known to be shown needs to be told too to be understood.
What I like about this movie is that it sounds like a potential SCP story, especially since this virus acts like a cognitohazard and/or a memetic agent
Current headcanon is that it wasn’t the government or the military who firebombed our last characters, it was Mobile Task Force Eta-10 “See No Evil”
🤝 agreed.
Oh boy do I have one for you, look up SCP 3449.
Now I wanna see Dead Meat cover a SCP short film like Overlord
There's an scp with "boom-boom" words
I thought the exact same thing
someone might've already mentioned this, but the deep, smooth voice fluctuating between calmly reading normal things (a missing cat) and talking about apocalyptic stuff reminds me of Welcome to Night Vale
Fr
I honestly never thought I'd get to see a kill count for it.
“Words can’t interpret” I see what you did there
not enough genocide denial for it to be Chomsky
Its boring
The Sponsor skit killed me. The new set looks awesome. Great video as always.
Agreed nice set

Something about these new Kill counts specifically are hitting DIFFERENT James. You, Chelsea, and Zoran are a comfort to watch and enjoy
Strange, I've been getting a ton of requests the last few days to cover this as well, is there a resurgence with this movie for some reason?
I feel that the concept is pretty interesting and scp like, plus James gives movies a wider audience so in a way he spreads the popularity of the films he coves creating fans and also I am huge fan Roanoke!
@@quietoryx3797 true
Probably because James teases movies he is covering in advance
So, pepole rememberd this movie, and asked for your taughts on how the Virus worked
Nobody requested James to watch this movie. This is what we in the business call "a coincidence".
It’s good.
Seeing James so happy and excited after his break and new set makes me so happy for him
I LOVED Pontypool! The sound design was amazing and the characters were great. Thanks for showing me this movie, Dead Meat!
Check out the radio play by the same cast. Don't wanna give too much away, but the plot is a bit different
@@BeeHatGuy I will later! I'm watching Dreamland next.
Yeah! I agree!
The Podcast definitely has made me appreciate the art of the horror genre even more!
If you think the film is a fever dream you really should give the book a go.
@らてちゃん Damn y'all, I'm 100% going to track down a copy, if the book is even a little more batty I gotta check it out
I found this movie like 7 or 8 years ago right as I was discovering my love for horror, and it’s definitely a big reason I’ve fallen down this bloody rabbit hole… Glad to see it get some love!
I saw this when I was 9 and got so scared I didn’t watch it again till I was 20. I absolutely love it now though but that song of the boy on the phone fucking haunts me 😂
Saw pontypool many years ago, instantly one of my favourite horror movies.
Really interesting and creative glad to see it covered
I love how diferent the concept of the virus is
It’s scary and weird and also super creative
ikr when i first seen this, it actually made me wanna learn french 😂 just scared talking in english lol
Similar concept in Metal Gear Solid V with a virus that turns people into mindless ghouls/superheroes with the main vector of transmission being through language
Reminds be a bit of the Happening.
Movies like this are a reason why the kill count is awesome. We all love the big budget movies but when you get a hidden gem like this that you never would have heard of otherwise, it’s perfect.
I love how your pfp is Deadpool. Both movies end in pool and Ryan Reynolds is Canadian (and American I know)
U0
When I was very ill years ago, I went through a period where words would just get lost between my brain and mouth. Word association games brought me back. This movie actually makes perfect sense to me.
Fun fact, the "loudspeaker" on the exterior of the building is actually a mechanical siren, not a speaker.
I loved this when it came out and it doesn't get as much attention as it deserves, or deserved, its nice to see it get some love.
This movie is so unique and, frankly, cool. It doesn't work well with the Kill Count format but I'm glad you covered it regardless.
I also used to watch carnage counts and didn't like the kill count at first as all I wanted was the kills themselves
I'm sad you weren't able to get into the whole, "the signal is coming from an eldritch being unaware of what its doing" aspect, but thank you for covering this Gem, happy Canada day!
I'm sorry, what?

this seems like such an awesome movie. it’s rare that after a kill count i’m super motivated to watch a movie (partially because i’ve seen the movies already or i was just never gonna watch them) but this one seems so cool and unique i can’t wait!
I watched this film for the first time many years ago and it still unnerves me. Thank you for bringing it to a wider audience!
Pontypool is a fantastic film and I am elated to see you trying to spread awareness of it. I'm also wicked jealous of that t-shirt.
Finally! I have been telling so many people to watch this movie for YEARS! So glad to see it getting some recognition
I love how odd this movie is and how much weirder the books are
I also find this movie incredibly analogous to my ADHD and how hard it can be to use words at times

Boyd Banks is also in The Dawn of the Dead Remake and Romero’s Land of the Dead, two movies I absolutely can’t wait to see covered on this show, whenever that happens, no rush James
Dude has such good lines, “She died without a name? Well that sucks”
Speaking of dawn of the dead, does anyone know why DM hasnt done a kill count for it yet?? I actually prefer it over the original.
Also id love to see the 28 days/ weeks movies covered as well!
James I just want to say ur vids make my day a lot better, and I wish u good luck
Really psyched to see James cover this, especially since it doesn't neatly fit the Kill Count rules. I remember Stephen McHattie from "A History of Violence" and (I think) "Shoot 'Em Up." Not just his voice but his face really holds your attention.
This caught my attention when fearnet was on demand. I loved the idea of words triggering an infection. So cool.
8:34 Lucy looks SOOOO happy that you’re filming again. Just so pleased to be here, couldn’t wait to be back.
I saw Pontypool in a Lit class when I was in college. It's a very interesting, unique idea to have language be the element of infection. Definitely a movie like no other.
Zoran is great but i am so happy to have you back. The set is fucking dope!!!
I just have to say how WONDERFUL the new numbers bits are. I love the new editing to it and the extra little fun facts in them! Great work James!
Never thought you would do this one! Good film. Fairly original.
I remember requesting it to the email and just knowing it would never have enough requests to be done. Words can not describe my excitement

I know what you mean, although it's hard to put into words (which, given how the memetic infection transmits, is probably for the best).
The baby scene made me pause and take a quick lap around my house, gave me chills
So glad to see such an underrated film covered. I saw this movie years ago and it's so good to see more people learn about it.

Yessssss! This is my absolute favorite obscure horror movie. I eventually subject every person in my life to Pontypool. Super psyched to see it covered!
So good to have James back with his passion and enthusiasm for horror!!
I absolutely adore this film!
I'm so glad you're bringing more attention to it.
Never would have found this movie without Dead Meat. But I went out and watched it after the trailer last week and holy crap I loved this movie! Thanks for the recommendation, James!
I met the main actor when I did some bit acting for Haven TV show. He was a super chill dude who likes pineapple.
This is somehow my comfort channel, I love James so much
I'm so happy to see you again James! P.S. congrats on your wedding I hope it was great!

This was an interesting one. Its rare to have a “zombie” movie where I’m just begging to see everything that’s happening or how it began
Speaking of, James's delivery makes these counts so enjoyable!
This is such a good movie, and I discovered it from this Kill Count. The radio play was also awesome and the book was batshit insane. I NEED a sequel.
been watching for years and i’m seriously in awe at how much the production quality has improved. hats off to you james!
I love this movie! Such an original concept. Really glad James is giving it more publicity.

Great vid, its good to have ya back... i cant wait for your next Hacketts Quarry stream i absolutely loved it, keep up the great content
