Did Alex Murdaugh Admit to Killing His Son Paul During Police Interview?

- A second police interview played during Alex Murdaugh’s family murder trial has many wondering whether the disgraced lawyer confessed to killing his son while talking to investigators in June 2021. The question of whether the disbarred South Carolina attorney said “I did him so bad,” or, “they did him so bad,” in reference to his son Paul’s murder was a major focus of the trial Tuesday morning.

Sounds like he's trying to say "they", but in the strained emotion of his voice, it comes out as "dey" which is similar in sound (with his type of accent) as when someone says "aye" (sounding like "eye" or "I") ...
Like someone with an extreme accent would say Daylight Saving as "Dye Leyeht" Saving.
So, it's understandable that "they did him real bad" can be misheard as "I did him real bad".
ANd, it is a true statement to say:
"I *h e a r d* him say 'i' "
... and to mean that
*at the initial hearing of it,* that is how you 'heard' it.
They should then ask the next question of how you hear it now? Especially if the recording is slowed down.
In other words, both are accurate to say:
"I heard him say (i)"
and
"I hear him say (they)".
The real question to ask is what do you *BeLieve* he was actually saying?
(That HE ..did them "real bad"?, Or that some "They" ..did them"real bad"?)
It sounds to me that he says “they did him so bad .”
Agree
Yep that’s what I heard too
.. Me too ..Murdaugh will be found "Not-Guilty" by reason of "Prosecutorial-Incompetence" ..
@@donaldpedigo296 right the prosecution in this case has been pretty bad there’s no proof
@@shawnmierczynski9830 Yes I think he may have done it. But I don't see the case. I've been a Juror before. I would so far have to find not guilty on this one. However I've only seen up to day 5. The day of this they vs I. I heard "they" not that it really matters to much. I'm watching minute per minute of the whole trial. This is a tough one so far. You hate to let someone go cold blood killings. But you also hate to put an innocent man in jail. So the prosecution better build a case soon.
I think the fact that as soon as you saw his dead son the first thing he did it was went for his cell phone because as he said " I wanted to see if I could do anything with it".
I think he deleted things on the son's phone and wanted to make sure the son was not recording their conversation.
He might have looked through the cell phone to make sure the video or voice memo wasn’t on.
His son was videoing when they both were killed
He was making a video for his friend who had a dog In one of their kennels that had a hurt foot.
@@amandablevins6809 wouldn’t they be able to recover deleted video tho?
Alex just really likes Pokemon Go
Always enjoy hearing GiGi’s reporting!
Why would you write down the statement if he was recording the conversation?
Exactly!
They didn't search his mom's house because he wasn't proven to be a suspect yet! The defense says they targetted him from the beginning, but you said it yourself, they didn't even search his mother's home til months later. You can't have it both ways.
He was a suspect from the beginning. Remember them getting his cloths that night?
The wheels are already falling off the prosecution....
"I did it so bad"is what I heard.
I very clearly heard I. Either way there’s no way to know if what he was thinking about and doesn’t prove anything. Not saying he didn’t do it, it’s just not proven yet.
He said I did him wrong. I double down as well. Yup he said it.
For someone like Alex, saving face, keeping up appearances and living up to the family name is no joke. It may not be the most compelling motive and difficult to relate to, but it’s a real one. And Maggie and Paul had become liabilities to Alex, that probably made it easier. Allegedly.
Agreed. In his mind a king among his plebs.
Yep!!
I went on vacation in that area last year to Hilton Head and there were so many people talking about this and now he was the Man how he had big billboards loaded with $$$ A lady who live there said he was one of these who thought he was above the law. And the name was a very Big name there
Evil. P!ain and simple.
Maggie and paul were on their way up.Alex was on his way down.
Very sad story may the victims rest in peace 🕊️🕊️
The wife and son enabled his behavior. 🤷🏻♀️
The only victim is Mallory Beach. The young woman Paul killed while driving his family's boat drunk.
@@Kirsten_is_cursed10
& how'd you come to that conclusion?
Why do we have a hard time believing Alex admitted he harmed Paul .
If Alex is/was a drug user , maybe he was high on pills doing the 2nd interview .
Look at these news anchors with big smiles on their faces you wouldn't think there talking about people have been brutally murdered ..I don't know what is wrong with people today!!!!
I think he said, “I did, it’s so bad.” He was responding after saying “It’s just so bad…I did, it’s so bad.”
Yes!
Yes. I don't know anything about this topic. You said it exactly.
Doesn’t matter what we think, only matters what the jury thinks. I heard “they” all along.
Me too. The media is just as freaking bad as the prosecutor
Oh yeah,.... who's they? The assassins he hired?
Alec murdough did not kill them :) somebody else did :) but he will never ever ever be caught
I really don’t think Alec Murdaugh had anything to do with his wife and son being murdered, but it’s not going to really make much difference for him regardless of what the verdict is in this case.
He clearly is guilty of enough of the other stuff he’s charged with that he will spend the rest of his life in prison, even if the jury finds him not guilty in this case
@@karenfyhr2363 I've always thought he hired someone
Alex said I. But this is up to the Jury to figure out.
This is so difficult to decipher.
Question:
Wouldn’t the dogs have alerted Paul and Maggie that someone suspicious was there?
Not necessarily. We don’t know the behavior of these particular dogs. We don’t know if they are deaf or just not very reactive., ect.
Absolutely!
@@punky19761 They are hunting dogs! Anything that moves and they are not familiar with they would bark…you don’t have deaf hunting dogs.
What if..the person that did this was familiar with the dogs?
They would be geared up for awhile but if well trained quiet if trained to be. So he did it or someone was hired that was familiar. His son’s brains by his feet. Wow- wow not human.
.. OF COURSE THEY WOULD .. & .. YOU DON'T KEEP EXPENSIVE HUNTING DOGS AT A HOME/KENNEL THAT DOESN'T HAVE A "VIDEO-SECURITY-SYSTEM" & YOU SURE DON'T HAVE YOUR "THREATENED FAMILY & BELOVED-SON" STAY IN A HOME THAT DOESN'T HAVE A "VIDEO-SECURITY-SYSTEM" ..

I worked for a legal malpractice defense lawyer for 15 years. Every lawyer will tell you - NEVER TALK TO THE POLICE without a lawyer present.
So, why did this lawyer talk to the police without his lawyer present?
Once it was slowed down, I heard they. Doesn't prove anything either way.
Could it be the Accused's influence in his town is so great, even the local sheriff did not want to upset him, by searching his house? - before he became more of the main suspect.
Oh, and forgot to say, when did Gigi become a reporter on Law & Crime?! Did i miss something?!! Love her channel. Shes a real gem.
for this trial!
Ellen bom dia, qual o canal dela, por favor.
I hear "I feel so bad."
I heard “I did him so bad” too. I can see why that guy thought he said it, because I did as well. But like he just said, it could mean anything, not that he killed him 🤷♀️
Yes, but directly opposite of Alex's image that they were such a happy family. Why would he say that? Out of guilt. Alex slipped.
It's just defense trying to slow it down and manipulate what was said. Why even slow it down?
I love GiGi!! So glad to see her on law and crime network!! ❤
I feel like he says “they” as a setup for his alibi. Most killers will try to give alternate possible suspects in their calls to 911
Croft sat on that stand all morning. Very interesting testimony.
This guy is going to walk.
In the 911 call he uses the word bad twice... "My wife and child have been shot badly", and then "I've been up to it now, it's bad" Don't know if it means anything but it seems to be a common way of him describing things
@Isles Right.... & I think when I hear that 'As opposed to being shot good (well)??!'🤔
911 panic my speech wouldn't be great either, but "Elleck's" language and vocabulary is so lazy...especially for an attorney. I'm from the south...I get the southern dialect....but Alex and some of these witnesses I have to rewind and decipher what the heck they are saying. Enunciate a little more please lol.
@@davidjack7418 Yes.... I'm from Oklahoma originally. You?
I haven't been following this trial....I heard "I feel so bad" but also hearing what they have also been talking about personally in my opinion. I think the "I" was referring to his ability to protect his son/family. Because he was in "deep" in debt so people came after him to make him "pay" in the form of something he could never get back.....his family 😥😥.
It sounds to me and others that he said "They did him bad," and that is especially true when the defense slowed the tape down to 1/3 speed. There is no "I" there. It sounds very much like "They did him bad." I think the prosecution made a mistake trying to make a big deal of this. The defense will hammer on this point in closing arguments.
Exactly my thoughts
Of course the defense is going to slow the speed and manipulate the audio to change what Alex really said.
I don't think they should have played it at 1/3 the speed. He didn't say it at 1/3. BTW I heard "I".
I'm from South Carolina and those who aren't used the accent may think he's saying, "I", but he's really saying, "they".
"This is so bad. They did it so bad."
Sounds like he is saying "this is so bad.. this is so bad"
I wonder when his coworker showed up that day asking him about the missing money for the first time if he was expecting it or not I wonder if it caught him by surprise
He was surprised, because he thinks he's the smartest guy in the room...
@@karenfyhr2363 I wonder when he squandered all the original old money from his family before he had to start stealing and what he did with all the original money?
I mean what was he purchasing that was requiring so much money?
With the influence the Murdaugh Family has/has had/have in the area, town, county and state, I believe the LE were still bowing the the family. I believe the LE were being told to not be as thorough as they should have been and that LE was afraid of repercussions from the Murdaugh family. Hence the work was sloppy to a point. I also think Maggie was the intended victim, the son was an after thought as he was there. It will be interesting to see if any lawyer comes forward to say Maggie was going to file for divorce. Motive…money and AM would be found out he embezzled. JMOO
Well he got kicked out of the family firm after they found out he embezzled ... To cover his massive losses after making very poor choices on stock market.... Financially he was a mess with hardly enough for gas money... After the firm cut him off , his only way out of his financial problems was the life insurance..
Clearly they 👈 that the cop didn’t even make a note of it at the times, Says ALOT
GiGi doing a wonderful job! Absolutely love her ❤
I can’t really understand it well enough to convict him or not convict him just on that, so I hope they have more compelling evidence than that. I thought I heard “they,” but for me this is evidence I would throw out because who even knows what he meant in that highly emotional moment?
The clean clothes are enough for me.
There's lots of evidence that proves he did it... They don't need a confession..
You don’t throw out evidence of a potential murder suspect. Lord. Please never serve on a jury.
@@audreydaleski1067 The clothes weren't clean. Not sure why people keep repeating that. You should watch the trial instead of reading articles.
If no one checked moms house , that gun could be anywhere by now. If he gets off on this charge …..😖
The mothers house wasn't searched for 3 months because he wasn't a suspect at the time
The spouse is always the first suspect.
He was a suspect from day 1.
His family has always had a lot of pull in that town, including the law enforcement..
But this turned out to be such a mess that even the law enforcement couldn't cover for him...
I hear They!
I listened over and over. The first time I heard “I”. I’ve seen videos before where if you’re thinking the word, you’ll hear it. But every time after, even when thinking “I”, I still heard they
"Fool for a Client."
I heard “they” more clearly now on the slow motion! Honestly, they should have something better than this to get a conviction. Sorry.
One thing that stuck out to me is when he said “Paul’s phone fell out of his pocket, I was gonna do something with……then he just stopped. Makes me wonder if he didn’t plan on getting rid of that phone too. Because I believe he tossed Maggie’s phone out the window on his way to his moms. This is IF he did it. I believe that he did, but who know at this point.
Or he figured to check other body before calling 911
@@InanaNinsianna After hearing the timeline with his OnStar, who knows what he was doing those 6 minutes he was down at the kennels, before he called 911.
@@paulaosborne9534 well, hopefully they can find some thing with a less reasonable doubt. I haven’t really been watching it that much, but it seems like that will be the case. Unless it was some kind of drug dealer, revenge killing.
When determining if he said I or they, remember to consider how his emotional state affects his pronunciation. When I replicate his strained speech, the word I becomes slurred with the previous word, distorting it somewhat. When I listen to the tape and take these things into account, I feel he said I.
Is the accused referring to the people he hired by saying ' They did him so bad '?
Or referring to the boat teens who couldn't have done this unless they are ninjas.
How couldn't anyone bust out laughing during the SLOW MOTION TAPE ? 😂 I would have.
Yea, that is just hilarious
So glad I don't have to keep my composure. I couldn't 😂
I listened many times, and at different speeds. I keep hearing :’ IT IS JUST SO BAD. IT’s GETTING SO BAD’
If he said ”they”?? Could he have got someone to do it?? 🤔
If he said they, how did he know it was they
Two guns not normally carried together. A shotgun and pistol fine, an AR-15 and pistol fine, an AR-15 and shotgun kind of awkward, just does not make sense.
They is also used when you don’t know a person’s gender.
I hear “I” every time
The detective probably did not write that statement because he did not want Murdaugh to twig he had just said that, and it was noted.
He didn't need to write it down because it's on the recording..
Just nailed his coffin with that move
Although i think Alex is totally guilty, i heard "they did him so bad."
.. Me Too .. Murdaugh will be found "Not-Guilty" by Reason of "Prosecutorial Incompetence" ..Their evidence is so-weak they've resorted to "fabrication" ..
No… anyone saying otherwise needs to come back to reality.

I do think he was upset. I don't think he expected the kind of carnage that played out when he 'allegedly' shot Paul. He watch too much old TV shows where there was a red dot when the fatal wound was (IE:Murder She Wrote)
He was a outdoorsman he knows the damage 12gauge buckshot does I promise you that. He didn't kill his son and wife.

(Esp when you up close see what happened with his brain!)Innocent until proven guilty. absolutely. He doesn't have to prove it either. THEY have to prove his guilt, you're right there. I think the effects of the drugs and the massive mistakes and paths he chose drove him to not realizing what a permanent solution this was to a temporary problem. I believe the evidence will meet the goal.
The slower version definitely said they
I heard "i", but what did he mean?
I heard “they” but it doesn’t mean he is innocent cause we don’t know if he knows who “they” are!! It wouldn’t be the first or last unfortunately that hire people to do these horrific things😢
Probably wasn’t expecting “them” to “do his son so bad”, just a thought of course. Jury is there to decide.
Never ever they!! I heard I!!
Did she say cousin Eddie? 😂
All I thought of was National Lampoon’s CV
why are they all calling him "alec"

Same situation as in the Corn rake murder. "Did he actually say that"?
Another scenario in the Ramsey case, - What did you do?
The son was making a video for his friend at the time of the killing.
His friend was keeping a dog in their kennels.
He was making a video of his friends dog which had a hurt paw.
It was a rash on the tail.
End is so bad raining
I CLEARLY heard him.
ZERO doubt in my mind what he said.
He said: "I did, I did saw a puddy tat"
I DID HIM so bad!!!
I hear they.
“It’s just so bad, they did him so bad”
"I did, its bad, it is so bad"
Man that man killed his family and if he didn’t he hired someone to do it.
I heard "I"
I don't like seeing the correspondents smiling while talking about this case as if they are commenting on a football game or something. They need to keep in mind that people were murdered.
Why did defense attorney put his hand on his forehead in doom when Blaca testified there were 3 weapons, of which one had be "lost" but was replaced?
I hear ITS So bad twice
I heard “I”.
“So bad - they did him so bad”
That doesn’t mean he wasn’t standing there.
Allegedly
Heard “ I “
I dont think the hit man was ever supposed to kill him. I think he hired the hit man so that the cops would think there is someone out to get his family and that would explain why his family was killed
I heard “I” once it was slowed down, at normal speed it sounded like “they”.
He says I.
Placing him at scene....
It's annoying that the correspondent doesn't seem to understand that they're asking people questions that don't relate to their job. It doesn't mean it wasn't done at all
I listened 2 or 3 times because 1st time I wasn't sure, so I closed my eyes to listen...it sounded like I did him...while they were asking what he saw...his son's brain blown out, so that was the context. But it sounds like I.
Wow they didnt't even fingerprint the clips or properly search the house. Old boys club?
Whether Alec pulled the trigger is debatable. Did Alec have involvement in the murders...definitely
The snapchat video is gonna put him with PM and AM at the murder scene before 9pm...huge. Its enough for me to prove he was involved...but not to convict. Can the jury come back with guilty of a lesser charge?
Answer: NO
The question is, will cousin Eddy be arriving in a RV?
"I did him so bad"
I have to be honest I hear they
BTW, being a qualified sound engineer, time-stretching is not the best approach to figuring out what was said. It would sound different with different timestretch algorithms.
I heard I as well
