You seem to be a true explorer, not afraid to go into uncharted territory, and motivated by the need to know "what would happened if I tried this..." I can sense the joy you derive from your work. Thank you for inviting us along.
I love how much fun you have. You also show the real process of art isn't flawless. People seem to think we get stuff right the first time. That doesn't happen with any craft or profession. I like that you keep the oops parts in the video. I also like how you reiterate why we should organize the table also, clean the edge of the iron. Good stuff!
Absolutely gorgeous work and yet so simple!! I have to try this. I'm not sure where to get the blocks of colored way or the stylus but I will be on the hunt for them tomorrow!! Thanks so much for sharing this!!!
This looks like such fun..I could get lost in this for days! LOL! The patterns made with these doilies and wax are so detailed, I am so surprised. I loved the close up shots because you can see how MUCH detail there is on the page! Thanks so much for sharing :-)
You are absolutely brilliant and a wonderful teacher. I have been an artist for many years but this is an entirely different way of seeing. Thank you for this and I look forward to more wonderful videos. I am now entering an entirely new arena - let the joy begin. :-)
What a great idea, I can't wait to buy doilies and find a cheap old iron someplace. I will be working on a very large collage soon, and this is going to be perfect along with my other ideas. Your papers are just beautiful, I am so impressed with the colors, and designs.
You have a very calming and soft voice which was lovely to listen too, aswell as seeing your beautiful encaustic work. Thanks for sharing, it was a great video. Tibby x
Thanks Tibby. I once had a lady who owned a video (back in the day) that she used to put on to go to sleep to - eventually the tape broke and she called me up distraught - new video was sent immediately - softly back to sleep she went :)
Hoping to jump into encaustic wax art. Thank you for your lesson your video was well done in so many ways! Please keep showing us your adventures in creative efforts. Your truly talented in more than your art but also in teaching and making videos! "Wax on …Wax off"….:)
Bravo I made all kind of wax paintings, but I havent this Idea. Maybe becsuse my designs Are so close as doylies. But you have some amazing detauls. Thank you 💗
My jaw literally dropped when i saw this. Doyleys. Who knew. I love how this art is so versatile as are you. Your waste paper artwork at 3:50 reminds me of Dragonbones and it's my favourite one.
excellent and so beautiful.. always a fan of abstract... loved all of them :) would u plz let me know how to work with encaustic wax colors and what r the other material u used ? would definitely like to try... so much inspired.. thanks :)
I used the encaustic art wax block colours - there are 48 of them and they do not contain any resins. I like these wax colours because they are very versatile and can be used of card (some flexibility in the thin wax techniques -pretty much anyone can use them safely - for mild ventilation an open window or reasonable air space is OK
This is a wonderful technique that I will try. It is full of surprises interesting and not so interesting ones. But it is full of life and creativity. Have you tried the same technique on larger surfaces and can you do it on canvas? Thank you for sharing.
Any base substrate should be fine Erin. The lighter in colour is is then the better the reflective qualities. The doilie itself could be embedded in the clear medium approach or you can equally use coloured waxes on the doilie - however, when they are melted off there may be blurring occur due to the existing wax medium also melting. That may give some very nice effects though - well worth exploring - have fun with it : )
The last one looks like a vintage map of a city. Very interesting effects although too many colours mixed on one page for my taste, but love the techniques & experimentation. I was expecting you to use fabric doilies to create stamp impressions (which I immediately thought I’ll try) & fill them with oil paint. 😃
Thank you for sharing your art, love the way you present in a very relax way to do things and resolve on the way. Beautiful results. May I ask you to share the name of the materials you used and the tool. I would like to try :) Thanks
Ana, the products used are all from the encausticart line. www.encaustic.com shows them all and has a link at the top of the shop page to about 30 national importers for countries worldwide. The doyleys are used for cake display often, but you can use any filigree paper so if you have access to a die cutting machine and any nice filigree dies then you can create your own individual doilie type of papers to use - it adds another level to the creative opportunities :)
FIrst off the word DOYLEY is often spelt as DOILIE so that is better if you are searching for these paper items. The Stylus I'm using is the encaustic art brand item no #99530500 - differing types for europe and the USA.
Hi...your work is fantastic...Please tell me how do you call that apparatus that you uses as brush to paint the lines. Where can you buy? Thanks for the answer
When you said you normally throw away your under paper....I cried a little. I bet you threw away your doilies too. *sob* ;) I was totally mesmerized through this whole video and I fully intend to steal your idea, just so you know! I will of course give you full credit for the inspiration and link back to your channel which I have now subscribed to. Awesome, impressive work...thank you for sharing your talents!
Hello Andrea, If you search using this phrase on Google [ encaustic art painting card ] then it will bring up the page at encausticdotcom about the card.
Beautiful fun work, I love experimental art, it appeals to me greatly. How can anyone not like this ? Does the wax Stay (ie not run ) if it is in a heated environment AND if not, would it stay if one covered it in a varnish of some kind ? Your thoughts on this would be appreciated. Thank you. MJ
MaryJane Leyne - thanks for the warm reflection :) ... the wax melts around 65 Celsius so it would have to be VERY hot to be a problem. That said, if behind glass the dark areas of an artwork become like a solar panel - absorbing heat. So it is wise to hang encaustic artworks out of direct sunlight (especially if glazed). Applying a sealer or varnish will hold the wax in place a little more in the unusual event of melt-down, but the wax will still melt at it's appropriate temperature. To conclude then, it is not a problem - the wax is fine in ambient temperatures but beware if glazed or on the dashboard of your car on a hot day! Hang out of direct sunlight if unsure.
Thank you so very much , I had a feeling you would say something like that but it was worth asking one who knows better. I ask because I learn. I am going to try this out and you might even see the results .hmmmmm well maybe lol. Once again Thank you for sharing your work. MJ
awesome pictures... where did you get that little iron? I have no idea exactly what encaustic is...but plan to do some googling and try to find out...I would like to give it a try. You are very creative..
Thank you for such a quick answer,..it looks like one I bought ( a little red one) at a neighborhood discount store many many years ago, in 1986. It was labeled a travel iron. But it didn't heat very well. I hope these do better. I was also wondering, do you have to use encaustic wax? What if I used color crayons? thanks again.
The waxes used in the video are designed to be melted, so provide a strong colour and behavior. However, regular crayons (paraffin wax) will certainly provide an experience of working with molten wax - they will be less viscous (more watery/thinner as a liquid) and the colours may include dyes rather than better quality pigments. But have a go :)
Wondering about using this technique on a solid base primed with uncoloured medium...would that work, or perhaps get obscured because it is going onto wax instead of paper? Thank you!
It's the 'encaustic Art' brand with 48 colours - encaustic art wax blocks. These do not contain any resins they are an encaustic wax rather than a resin wax mixture.
Each wax product will behave in it'sown unique way. Crayons are often paraffin wax which is lower melt point and lower viscosity (more runny liquid). Give it a go with whatever you have to hand. I used the stuff in the link below = encaustic art wax block colours.....
Been doing this for 30 years Valerie. This wax I'm using does not contain any resins. The process is less dangerous than burning a candle in your room- we are not burning wax nor burning pigments or dyes and thus not creating such toxic fumes as that process. The wax is just brought to melting point - no smoke or fuming occurs. The USA toxicity tests at Duke University (ACMI testing) told me that opening a household fire door was far more toxic than using this wax product could be - so there really is no problem provided you use low temperature tools. Having said that, it is always sensible to have a window open for some ventilation.
Thanks for your response, the only reason that I pointed this out is that I feel that instructors have a responsibility to be clear about safety issues in the arts. I am a fiber /mixed media artist, and I teach batik and all kinds of methods of dyeing fabric. Please see this link about the dangers of encaustic wax and good safety precautions. This is nothing personal, perhaps you do teach it. Thank you. www.rfpaints.com/resources/encaustic/33-encaustic-safety
I totally accept your good intention Valerie. Encaustic Paint containing resins (like the ones your link directs toward) do need far better ventilation than the wax only paints I am using in the video.
i realize this is, most likely, a silly and somewhat petty question, but why are you spelling doily as doyley? i'm a spelling cop and it was just bugging me. lmao! i'm seriously not trying to be a bitch or annoying-just really wanting to know! thanks! oh and this is a very cool idea and i can't wait to try it. thanks for sharing it!

what kind of wax product are you using, they are beautiful, but I haven't ever seen color waxes in that form before?

Sorry to bother you, I simply would like to know what the wax paints are that you use. Are they in a pan of some sort?
Qué arte tan maravilloso!
Sou do Brasil e amei este trabalho! Poderia resumir para mim em português? Por favor! Grata! Aguardo. Abraços. 🌹
Love this, can´t wait to try it. What kind of paper do you use. Thanks from Iceland
Those papers are called doilies. Most party and craft stores have them. Also bakery supplies should carry them.
Looks like fun !
Thanks - you obviously are staying very positive : )
Does this technique work on canvas? Thinking about making some of this to offer in Christmas! :) Thank you!
.. no reason why not. Just make sure there is a good key (adhesion) between the wax you use and the canvas surface - especially if already primed.
What kind of paper is the best for encautics work?? thanks
Love it all!!
Thanks :)

what kind of paper you are using
very useful study material for learners
Beautiful!
What is the wax? I have never seen this........I could enjoy doing this.

is it wax candles or wax crayons but i truly love your idea now my Christmas im going to earn some cash thanks for your video
+joshua gorey ... see the comment below this one for the wax details :)
Hi! Do we HAVE TO use that Encaustic iron or can I just use another ironer?
... no Rob, you can use anything that melts the wax to your liking.
Rob, you can use any old iron --even a cheap welding tool
I must admit when I read the title I thought it was going to be lame.Boy was I wrong.Very impressive results.
Thanks. It's amazing that often, complexity and simplicity can coexist with mutual reward.
Did u use regular wax crayons to create this affect?
