I'm trying to figure what size torpedo level I need to buy how far is how many inches if you could could you let me know what size is the one you used in your video
Thank you for such a simple to understand video. And thanks for your service to our country and biggest thanks for not being afraid to openly pray. This country and world needs all we can get! God Bless you.
Thank you for the awesome comment. I appreciate it. I saw your other comment about the knife and making a line. I have never thought of that. Great idea. Have a blessed day my friend and again, thank you for the awesome comment. God bless you brother!
Once you have it level and image is where you want it to be, take the very tip of a knife and make two slight scratch marks directly in line as reference points. One mark at pivot point and one on the transducer. Or, use a white permanent marker if scratch mark would bother you. Then, you’ll always have a means to visually confirm angle has not changed.
Luv that you start with prayer and prayer on your video, Thank you! Encouraging and bold. And thank you for this simple transducer leveling. Just got two Garmin….video right on time.
Thank you so much for the kind words. I appreciate you taking the time to not only watch, but leave a comment. I try and answer every comment, sometimes takes a little longer like this when I am out of town, but Thank You and have a blessed day!
I sorta did this awhile back. If I remember correctly don`t think the boat was moving though. So guess what I`m gonna be doing when I get back out on the water. Thanks very much for the video. Greatly appreciated.
yes to get the right angle, the boat needs to be moving. I tried to demonstrate that, but the bubble was all the way back to the top and did not move much. It makes a huge difference. Basically level it when the bat is at the speed that you are going to use your graphs. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Really enjoyed the video. The only thing that could have been better was at the end when your showing the drop-off, the camera was to far back and could not see what you was pointing out on the screen. But the rest was great. Thank you
Thank you and sorry I had it back to far. I will have to go back and watch the video so I can see where it is that you are talking about and see what I can do about explaining it. Thanks so much and happy Thanksgiving!
Best video explanation I have come across! I'm installing a Stern Saver on my 16' aluminum Lund today (original screw holes are leaking like crazy), so this will be the perfect opportunity to use your leveling method - simply and easy. Thanks so much for the video. PS - Think i will tie a cord to my level - lol!
Thanks for the video, I just install my Helix 10 on console been searching for something on RUclips on how to level my transducer. This was def. the ticket. Again appreciate the video.
Great video, thanks.. I used to listen to John Schlitt when he was in the band Petra back in the day.. Never checked out his stuff since those days - I think I'll do that..
Man he is an amazing singer and a great guy. Has become a personal friend. a quick story how we met. I wrote to Petra when I was in Afghanistan to buy some music, this was before digital downloads. I did not hear a thing for about a month, then one day I get a package with every Petra CD and a personal note from John. Fast forward to about 4 years ago, I found that card and contacted him. We talked on the phone for about an hour. He has become a good friend now. Check out www.johnwschlitt.com and then check out the Jay Sekulow Band. Here is a link to one of the songs. @@AsleepAtTheReel That is a great story and thank you for your service!! I'll check that music out for sure. I grew up listening to Whiteheart, John Elefante, Petra, Rez band, Degarmo and Key, Phil Keaggy, and all the rest of those Christian rock artists.. Thanks again..
Thank you so very much for that instructional video Chris! I never knew it would make such a difference on my Lowrance HDS but it was like Night & Day how the images popped out after doing the leveling trick. Thanks again and continue making GREAT Videos my Bro. HE aka Fishbonz
I am so glad to hear that. Thank you for letting me know. I know it worked for me, but not many people let me know afterwards if the information on the video helped them. So glad it helped and also one thing that I did not say on there is this is something you might want to do every 6 months to a year, especially if you are fishing areas like I am in where you get a lot of standing timber. One jolt can mess it up, so not a bad idea to check it. Thanks again for watching and commenting. We lost my father-in-law yesterday so life is a bit hard right now and knowing that something I put out helped someone makes my day. Have a blessed day my friend.
You`re welcome Chris. I absolutely love your Videos because you not only video your success`s ,but Failures as well. Not everyone does that. Also your sound track "Find A Way" takes me to another place. I salute you my brother You`ve done it right.I`m so sorry for your loss my friend & Prayers Up.
ha ha, it is not hard. The hardest part for me is being old and having the get on the ground and back up after working on the transducer! 😂 It is not hard and really takes not time. Thanks for watching my friend.
Glad I could help!!! It seems like a lot of work to do, but it really is not. My picture is better and I get a consistent depth even running 65 MPH where it used to blink after a certain speed!
Thank you. Yeah honestly I did not read the instructions when before I did it. Technically it should be on the side. The reason for this is so the motor does not create static or fuzz on the screen. In my case it worked. What ever you do, make sure that you measure it and keep the thing straight. That is why I did it there because I could measure from the bottom, instead of from an angle. I hope that helps. I appreciate you taking the time to watch and leave a comment. Sorry it took so long, been on the road and came home to a dead computer. More videos coming soon as i finish building this one. Have a blessed Day!
Very informative video of transducer's angle placement. Only one question about this method. Is that only for transom mounted transducers? What about "in hull" transducers in some "smaller" boat counterparts like a kayak, Jon boats and similar watercrafts.
Great video, thanks. Say, I noticed that in viewing your side imaging, that you had a series of vertical lines in the starboard side of the water column while side imaging. I have the same situation in the port side of the water column in my side imaging returns. Do you or does anyone else know what is causing this interference? I don't believe it's the jackplate in my setup, but not sure. Any ideas, bad transducer, bad transducer cable? I'm at a loss. Anyway, love the prayer to begin and thank you very much for your service.
Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. that is a great question and one that I do not know the answer to. I would have to go back and look, but the lines that I normally see are lines from going faster than the unit is set for. You can set a speed in the unit itself. If it is set for 2mph and you are going 3 you can get lines. I will rewatch this video and see if I can see what you are talking about and maybe get an idea. Thanks again, great question and have a great Thanksgiving!
Not only important to put the level in the same place on the boat but also to place the change on the exact place on the level. On a short level it could change the whole angle if you put the change 3/4 back on the level on the water and all the way to the end of the level on land.
I'm mostly trolling for Salmon and Walleye in river current, will this technique still work for leveling at say 1.8- 2.6 mph. up stream or down? I'd like to have crisper image's while trolling so I assume I just need to match the speed to duplicate the fishing situation right? Although on windy day's this all goes out the window, so to speak? Thank You for this info it gives me something to think about and try! Just bought the HDS12 Live by Lowrance and want it as accurate as possible. Thanks again and for your Service!! God Bless.
Yes. The slower you go usually the better image you have. My when put into gear goes 3.5 mph. If on a trolling motor instead I go slower. I have the speed set for 3.5 on the graph so as long as I am not going faster the image should be much better. Although this is a totally different type of fishing that I do you should get the same results. Thank You for watching and taking time to leave a comment. Great question.
thanks and good question. It should not affect that, but at the same time I do not use an anchor. It is not really angling up though, it should be flat with the water. Your boat will angle, but the point to this is to figure out the boat angle and make the transducer flat with the water giving a better return. Thanks for watching and great question.

i am not getting a good picture on the left side but the right side is good . do you have to trim your motor a bit so the left side can get a good picture. because i find the motor is blocking the view?
if the motor is blocking the view yes, you will need to trim it. If at all possible, I would move the transducer. Mine is below the motor, so it will not interfere.
@@AsleepAtTheReel I shared your channel, I hope some already came over. I want to do a veterans trip next spring also. I know you have a lot going on, but hit me up when you get a chance.
For the most part. Basically put the boat in gear and use that speed. I like to go a little faster, say 4 mph, so that is the speed that I will use. Where speed is important is two things. First it will change the pitch of the boat causing fewer or more coins to level it. Second is there is a setting to determine your speed in the settings on the map. I have mine set for about 4 mph. What that does is tells the computer to send out more sonar waves or less If I am set on the graph to go 2 mps, but I end up going 6, my picture will be terrible. Hope that helps.
FYI. You can do all of that stuff with that thing almost everyone carries in their pocket called a Smartphone. Just install an angle finder app and do the same thing without fumbling around with a pocket full of change. Just saying! Have a blessed day.
Good point! Personally I have so many apps on my phone that I do not want to download one more that I will use once. Quite honestly I never thought of that either though. Thanks for watching and for the great tip! Have a blessed day!
Thank You. The one I used was about 8 inches long. Although I don’t know if the size makes a difference but I could see having to big of one could be an issue. I would stick to one about 10-12 inches long. If too big there might not be a spot big enough to put it and if to small you might not get enough room to put the coins under it. Hope that helps.
No as that should have been done when installed. Your left and right is going to change depending on if you are alone in the boat or if you have a passenger. The biggest thing is front to back.
what makes you think your side rail is level to the lake water surface? It isn't on my boat. I use the scum line on the boat left after a day on the water. I then proceed like you and level that scum line with a level and my trailer jack. Then level the transducer and lock it down.
Nothing makes me think it is level, it is not especially when moving. That is why I use the coins. This is the flattest surface I have. If you get the coat level using the jack plate, you have failed to add in the factor of the degrees that the motor pushing adds. Yes, you will be close, but it does make a difference. When I do that same thing, putting the coins under to make it level and take the boat out of gear the level shows that I am off. If you want to view downscan and side scan not moving then ignore what I showed. Thanks for watching and the comment. Happy New Year!
When moving, can you adjust trim and get the same effect as coins under the level? Maybe permenantly mount a bubble in the rail area and use trim to set up for level at any (reasonable) speed. Maybe not fuel efficient, but would keep the transducer level to the water surface. @@AsleepAtTheReel
You can but really not needed. If you put the level back on the boat, in the same place and make it level by raising or lowering the tongue, that puts the boat in the position of how it would be while driving. After that you simply need to put a level on the transducer, do not need the coins at that point because the boat is in the position of driving so all you are doing at that point is making sure the transducer is level with the bottom. Great question. I guess you could put the coins on the transducer with out lowering or raising the tongue, but I have not tried that to see if it gives a true level.
