I have another reason why and it's for the same reason a right winger named The Distributist tried to warn Sargon of Akkad about fighting against the far-left back in 2016: lack of institutional support from both universities and governments. Because both institutions are mainly run by a coalition between far-leftists and neoliberals who support an ideology called globalism, they will use power to obfuscate and go around the 1st Amendment to crush decent against their moral worldview. This is even worse when many large companies agree and partner with the politicians to skirt around the 1st Amendment using the "private company" argument. The neocon Republicans also support many of those policies. There is a reason more right wingers refer to those politicians as the "uniparty".

Funny enough, when Kindred insulted Toriyama, he automatically became an enemy of a large chunk of Latino America because we loved Toriyama. Seriously, most of the replies came from furious Latinos; if there's anything that Latin Americans hate more than each other, it's the term Latinx and people who insult Toriyama.

Nah nothing to see here. Truly isn’t similar to when they released multiple articles within minutes of each other proclaiming that “gaming is dead” and that “gamers aren’t your audience anymore” way back when the original movement started.
Wouldn’t be the least bit surprised that this (“Hard R” Graffiti) was coordinated in some special chat group or exclusive journo mailing list where they conspired to lob as much slanderous shit about this game as they can.

Well.. so is bad PR. PR is only good or bad if the viewer sees it that way. These recent virtue signaling attempts often get totally ignored or even derided because it's obvious to the viewer that it's not genuine. It's obviously meant to elicit a positive opinion, but it slips the mask and shows people why NOT to believe them.
A smear campaign isn't gonna ruin someone if the viewers don't believe it.

I've said this for a while. If GamerGate 1 was a failure, there would not be a GamerGate 2.
For all the shit anyone can sling at the original, it definitely mainstreamed and cemented the idea that games journalists were corrupt hacks. That was the original goal, Sargon declared victory, GG wins. I saw that real time way back when which is why him lamenting that it lost is so disheartening, he himself has forgotten his past.
Even if GamerGate 2 doesn't fix the industry, it has now been mainstreamed that this is an issue in some capacity. This is a W, we would be dumb to forget this. It is now open to talk about it.
A phrase I remember lately. "If they had already won, their propaganda would be unnecessary." The journos and consultancy firms are in late stage propaganda, the kind designed to demoralize and humiliate people into accepting it. This is not a comment on their capture, but rather the amount of tools they have left. They can have all the institutions in the world... but so long as someone is talking about this, they can't rest. And I relish in that fact, still repping the original in servers and social media I'm in, complete with a backlog of evidence that leaves most people nowadays scrambling to support the harassment narrative and failing.
If GG1 failed, it's largely because no one knew the scope of what was at play. Now people do, what with ESG scores and BRIDGE being a known thing. We can afford to fight more offensively now simply because we have a clue what to actually do.
Exactly, the purpose of both Gamergates is to inform and expose these corrupt hacks for what they are, to damage the fake image they try to present to the public. Any societal changes caused by it is just an added bonus.
And we are obviously succeeding in some way. The reason why all the psychotic activists are panicking now is because more and more people are talking about them and the unprofessional, harmful, and toxic behavior they have been engaging in. Heck, the inciting incident for the current incarnation of gamergate was them getting angry over a Brizillian man simply pointing out the existence of a consultancy group. He didn’t make any accusations at them or try to debate them, all he did is point out that they exist, and they lashed out like mindless wild animals. They don’t want people to talk about them or the things they do, because it hurts the image they want to sell. We don’t need to beat them in an argument, we just need to keep talking about them and shining a spotlight on them for others to see.
Exactly, the purpose of both has always been to inform and expose these hacks for what they are, to talk about them and make it mainstream to discuss their horrible actions. The objective of the movement was never to change the minds of these people, because nothing we say will ever change their minds. These psychos aren’t doing this because they misinformed, they are fully aware of how wrong they are and are doing it anyway out of malicious intent, so there would be no point in trying to get them to change.
Good post. I've never understood people thinking "we" won GG1. Knowing your opponent is wrong is not a win, it's an ego buff.
Both "Gamer Gates" were/are about (a) the _perception_ of the wider (non-gamer) part of society, and (b) about the content, packaging, and profit model(s) of games. After GG1, all three got steadily worse from the gamer perspective.
I wrote this after the "HD-2 victory" over Sony, but it's just a minor tactical success. We _could_ win this time, but we've barely started.
Trying to find a decisive battle often loses the war. Just ask Japan on how their sole focus on fighting the Americans in WWII hinged on this large land-sea-air battle where their side would win out.
We just have to hop island to island until we corner the bastards. Even if it means several more "gamer gate" battles, pushing forward slowly while consolidation is key to victory.

Trusting Sony/Playstation of all companies out there to release a game like Stellar Blade unchanged was naive from the start. They're almost entirely responsible for the Senran Kagura Series being essentially dead. The moment Shift Up took the Sony money it was over.
They should have gone with Microsoft to get uncensored releases on Xbox and PC, and deter Microsoft from their recent decision to jump aboard the woke train in solidarity with Soyny. Moral of the story is that if you truly want your games to be uncensored, make your own website for it, because these big name companies won’t support your game if you want full creative freedom.

well, you know how the old gamer saying goes "the only hit point that matters is the last one." you only lose when you can't fight anymore, stand strong folks.
Voting with your dollar is the easiest method but a drop in the ocean at the end of the day. The best method is contacting companies directly. Sending real physical mail (or at least emailing) and yes, even picking up the phone.
You’d be surprised how few people it takes to change something when there is a real human interaction behind that change. It’s how the other side did it, so let’s use their own weapon against them.
The other side has a legal and academic framework that actively cooperates with and subsidizes them. They were swimming with the current and you will not be. It is illegal to be based. I'm not advocating for inaction, but when you've taken all the ground you can with consumer activism and you see how far you still have to go, I just want you to understand why.

This is why I've grown to distance myself from social media and some people in the real world. Facts are seldom the prime focus of a lot of discussions/debates. Feelings matter more than facts and reallty..

IMO, GG1's main fadeaway was a mixture of how many people kept on wanting to appear at the spearhead of things + how many "operations" to do things, like emails and what not, were hyped up and then given so little commitment and followthrough. And people already chomping at the bit for announcing GG2 is happening when we have a general shift happening because the money is drying up. Google's firings should already be a clear picture of that. Kotaku switching to game guides while one employee had to armtwist her way into being allowed to continue to write besmirching tabloids is another notch.

I’m getting rather annoyed by the people who are apathetic to DEI occasionally calling out its worst examples but then shaming people who call it out more consistently, even in its more subtle cases, for being “cultural warriors” and “just as bad as the activists/other side.”
This stuff always starts off small, and is allowed to grow because people tolerate it. The reason people might be a bit too quick to get out the pitchforks now is because of pattern recognition.

When it comes to TAL’s take on “it’s not political” it stems from two beliefs
1) the idea that none of the people who push the message actually believe it; they’re just grifters
2) That gamergate collapsed by people turning it into a political issue, in turn dividing the members on political lines, and people shouldn’t focus on things like “they put type a and type b body types in the game instead of male or female”
With the first point, there are absolutely people who were just milking the situation for money: Anita Sarkeesian was 100% mostly doing it to advance her own career and for the cash (we can tell by how trans members of Feminist Frequency came out and said they weren’t paid.) However to say that EVERYONE who is affiliated with Sweet Baby Inc is a shill with zero earnestness in their beliefs is an impossibility. Alyssa Mercante, for example, does genuinely seem to unironically believe what she says. She outright says sexy video game characters should be “treated like strippers.” Coming out of anyone else’s mouth, it would’ve been called skeevy and perverted - especially since “stripperiffic” was used as a jab for female character designs back during the original GamerGate - but Alyssa IS (or was) a sex worker; she’d unironically believe it was a complement.
The second point is somewhat true, and somewhat false. Yes, GamerGate did fall apart due to people’s politics not aligning but, as you pointed out, it was already a fairly political issue. It was the exacerbation of it and introducing other elements into it that killed it. GG2 already STARTED with all of the other elements in it, so people siding against Sweet Baby already know what they’re getting into. People who would’ve capitulated to Gamergate 1’s journalists don’t do so now because all the cards are shown.
Also as a side point, TAL uses the fact that games like Saints Row 3/4 had the option to mash up male and female with different body types as evidence that “body type 1/2 was always here” when in reality there’s a major difference between how it used to be a source of humour rather than nowadays when it’s used for a weird political issue, as well as a major difference between the mindsets of the people who are implementing it now vs then.
Keep in mind this isn’t me just hating on TAL; I really like the guy and his content. I just disagree with this take of his in particular.

GG never had a chance to win because the ultimate conclusion to be drawn from it was that whoever gets to build the narrative in the end decides who is right and who is wrong, regardless of how much reason and evidence you bring to the table. This is what got so many people disillusioned in the first place. The difference today is that games journalism is undergoing a slow and agonizing death, and, as you mentioned, everyone is more aware of how intellectually dishonest these people are.

In my opinion I think the question of whether the movement is likely to "succeed" or "fail" is entirely based on what the win-con is defined as.
If the goal is just to get woke stuff out of our hobbies then it's probably doing all right, the pendulum is swinging in that direction. But if the goal is to get quality products it's already showing that really isn't the case. We're seeing a ton of fairly mediocre products see massive monetary success for the primary reason being "they piss off woke people." I mean Hogwarts Legacy is explicitly woke but it was raised as a "victory" for "our side" just because some people don't like JK Rowling. If the mainstream news outlets screeched about Forspoken or Suicide Squad we'd be seeing people defending them as "our" games and saying that they were actually amazing.
The reason I think gamergate 2 will fail is because most people don’t care about who makes the games. If people like how a games looks, they will play it anyways. For example, a lot of people highlight how Spider-Man 2 is woke, but it still has a lot of sales and a lot of popular RUclipsrs were playing it. Sadly, I don't think culture can change back to the way it was before unless something happens to the money movers. I'm talking companies like Patreon, Paypal, banks etc who constantly update their policies in order to make it very hard for anyone to create their own stuff outside of approved circles.

I disagree and agree with a few things. I don't think GG 2 will fail and optics do matter. There are grifters you want to keep out, people who genuinely change their minds, but there also new normies looking in you want to convince. Speaking of Gravity Rush, it's funny how instead of saving up for PlayStation's current-gen console, I'm exploring Japan Studios' past games on older hardware. Since modern PlayStation has nothing to offer me anymore, I'm forced to look to the past, getting a Vita and the handful of exclusives it still has, and even a PlayStation Move of all things. I'm not lying when I say I'm having more fun playing Ape Escape Move than I ever had with Horizon 1 or the recent God of War games. That's how low the bar is.
Even the few games they put out that interest me even slightly, I can already buy on my more powerful PC, even via a second-hand key if I don't want any money to go to the publisher. All the PS5 currently has going for it is Astro's Playroom, Rise of the Ronin, and Stellar Blade, and those last two are likely timed-exclusives. All three could easily be ported to Steam, by the way. Astro would require dualsense, but it's a small price to pay when I can use that controller on other PC games.
Yeah, I'm much the same. Heck, the reason I even have a PS4 is Gravity Rush 2 and a PS5 - Returnal. I barely use the systems now. I guess that's its own topic: If modern consoles are worth a damn.
I did also spend a lot of time with Japan Studio titles on past systems as well, which is why a part of me died when, iirc, Sony closed down Japan Studio.

While I agree with most of it otherwise, the layoffs are largely not a strategic failure. Most studios make their money off the investment boom-and-bust cycle, not sales of games themselves. Layoffs are standard strategy for the bust phase.

I think you're overlooking 2 things.
1.) Gamergate one calmed down cause they won. The journalists were both fined by the FTC and forced to update their older reviews and articles to admit to what they were accused of, and had their reputations destroyed in the gaming public eye. People outside of the gaming public would remain unaware of this but they didn't read or respect what gaming journalists had to say in the first place.
2.) Even normal non-gaming people are becoming increasingly negatively affected by woke DEI ESG stuff and pushing back against it too. We might not be united as a front with them cause they still don't care about games, but they still hate the ESG DEI too and are pushing back against them elsewhere.
Etics is important at this scale even if people want to focused on politics, ignoring them or only taking of them are a potential hassard thats why I like your content
You should check out the NeverKnowsBest video on Gamergate 2. The worst video on this subject I've ever had to watch that I finally unsubscribed from him. Conflating independent youtubers talking about gamergate 2 and woke shit in games is apparently tantamount to (or even worse) than industry devs, game journalism webstes, and game community managers blasting their customers and hating them in public.

@genyatus Shift Up is a lost cause. Ever since Destiny Child, they take pride in choosing the worst publisher for their product. That game died. Their current game Nikke is published by Level Infinite who is owned by Tencent who insisted on their AGGRESSIVELY horny game maintaining a Teen ESRB rating all while attempting to push $60 skins as the norm.
Signing a deal with Sony when they're known to punch down on smaller studios and indies as a pastime, especially when you have even the smallest curve on a woman in your game, was asking for hate to be shot their way.
Now they're going publicly traded and will probably be bought out or at least have their majority shares bought out by Sony or Tencent, it's only a matter or time for them to squander the platform they were given by their (not for long) target audience.
