It's a huge topic, but here's 2¢ out of my millions on it - I think you have to look at as broad a variety of indigenous societies as you can and compare them to the evolution of a broad variety of civilized societies if you wanna sketch a picture of how things unfolded. I mean, for example, the hopi are patriarchal but matrilineal to this day... So, for me, that begs an interesting question - "why have all technologically advanced societies been largely or completely patriarchal?" I am reminded of the fact that Medusa was originally one of the three hideous Gorgon sisters, with no human or womanly features to speak of whatsoever. Her myth evolved from being completely about the terrors of nature to being about interpersonal gender dynamics, which makes sense. The earliest versions of Greek myths are often about how scary and terrifying the natural environment is. As Greek myth evolved into heroic storytelling, it became much more focused on creating order in a society growing in complexity at a breath taking pace. (That being said, my knowledge of Greek myth is pretty flimsy. I know a couple stories that interest me and some broad strokes and that's about it.)
