What a great director, such a shame he does not make more great movies. Outstanding reviews, I always enjoy those films, and you're work talking about it makes the right tone to watch again all of them. Thanks for post this great reviews. there was this "critic" (russian I think) and he aproachs the movies THE way you do, focusing in the story and what the movie and director was trying to say, don't remember the name, have you ever heard about him?
*With A Vengeance* is a classic. *Last Action Hero* is a cult classic. *Thirteenth Warrior* is a classic (even though some credit goes to Crichton for reshoots and bringing in Jerry Goldsmith). *Thomas Crown Affair* is a classic remake of a classic.
Predator, die hard 1 and 3 (wish he could have done the second one but he was working on another favorite of mine, the hunt for red October. Last action hero was clever and funny. One of the best old school action directors
Well I have one Cronenberg and one Carpenter video on my channel if you want to see what I think of them. You are definitely missing out if you haven't seen their films. Cronenberg's early work was gore body horror films but these days he has toned down the violence. Carpenter has pretty much retired but has made some great movies including my favorite film "The Thing". Like the Twilight Zone they both used Horror and Sci-Fi to tell stories and ideas to the viewer that were important to them.
Thanks Eddie, I have many other videos like this one on my channel if you are interested. And out of curiosity did BREXIT affect Dublin or just the North?
It made the price of the euro towards the pound better for irish people but I believe it will hurt irish exports to England as it will be more expensive to buy our products
Funny thing, I own Predator, Die Hard, and The Hunt For Red October all on VHS. I also own some of his not-so-great films, which were good in their own ways. I remember we watched Medicine Man in school- I own that as well. HAHA
Best action director ever along James Cameron. Die Hard is still the best action flick ever made, in my opinion. No one is able to handle tension or take advantage of confined locations such as John. This is why Die Hard 3 didn´t work that well. Cause it lacked that claustrophobic vibe.
Excellent director. Too bad he didn’t do anything anymore. I miss him and Michael Mann. And I think die hard 3 is an excellent fun sequel, the last great mctiernan movie
-He say after release from prison he have offier jobs for direct film but bad experience from Rollerball and Basic made him very careful and safe about project filming. [Sharpel he walk away because studio decide to make Action film and after he leave from project, they release movie under new name Killing Season (2013).] -He work for job as script doctor under pseudonym and wrote screenplay by himself for comeback to direct film but need budget from Indie Studio not from Major Studio. [three project is Western / Sci-Fi / Horror and one of those had to wait to green light from some studio but he can't reveal after first studio leaves project while COVID-19 attack first time]
What’s your opinion on Medicine Man? I recently revisited it, and while it has some good sequences, it feels kind of unfinished, as if scenes were abruptly cut out of the movie and hokey narration was added to the opening and closing scenes in a weird attempt to give it more of a structure. It just doesn’t have the same Connery/McTiernan magic of Red October and, if anything, seems to prove that McTiernan isn’t necessarily the best director for romantic movies.
Thats a strange one, it's not really an adventure movie, a man vs nature movie, or a romance movie, its all over the place. In the end I think it's a solid movie (its one of my mom's favorites) but the big problem was that there wasn't any natural chemistry between Connery and Bracco. Compare that with Brosnan and Russo in "The Thomas Crown Affair" where there was chemistry.
I agree that Predator, Die Hard and Hunt for Red October are his greatest films... but are you really not a fan of Die Hard with a Vengeance? It may not be on the level of greatness of the first film, but it's certainly the best and most watchable of all the sequels.
I am a huge fan of Die Hard With A Vengeance, I just brushed by it because I was focusing on these three films. Check out my Die Hard review here I talk about Die Hard With A Vengeance briefly in it www.dailymotion.com/video/x2p5hrr_a-look-inside-die-hard-part-1_shortfilms
I love you your uploads, keep up the good work. It's strange how I am not aware of This directors name. I see Predator as a classic ,I love that movie, its burned in my mind as much as Spielbergs Jurrasic Park, very visceral experience, you are in the jungle with those guys and its a great action movie ...and he directed Die Hard..? Another classic movie known in pop culture and yet I didn't know the directors name or "brand?". Maybe he didn't kiss the right asses?
McTiernan made Predator and Die Hard back to back within a year of each other and both films did not have finished scripts when they were filmed. He quarterbacked two of the most important high quality action films ever made and he has pretty much been thrown out of Hollywood. Dear god if Roman Polanski and Woody Allen can keep making movies why the hell can't McTiernan get a job?
+Sean McDougall Yeah, no kidding. Good old insular Hollywood protects degenerates like those two. There is a dearth of good action films nowadays IMO. People want to watch movies with heart and big, brassy balls. They want to watch antagonists which people love to hate (Rickman was perfectly cast for that role). McTiernan brought both to his films. It will never happen, but Fox, Warner or Paramount would be well-served to have McTiernan helm some of their comic universe movies.
+Sean McDougall This is a rare case on RUclips where the content completely trumps tech issues. All of them - ideas and personality - are really, really engaging. Granted, I also noticed and more than once tried to convince myself the tinny sound and pops were just texture, like a favorite old album. Haven't worked my way to the more modern installments, but whatever, thank you for doing these!
I get that movies need to have subplots involving a romance of some sort, and that it's often used as a device for character development... along with providing something for women to enjoy in an action film. But, I'm really sick of the alcoholic, child neglecting, troubled marriage, imperfect man segment that, for me, is an interference in the movie. It brings everything to a stop, the way a commercial does on TV. That's the part where I get up and use the rest room, or just dig my fingernails into the arm rests of the seat until it's over.
Windtalkers and paycheck weren’t successful movies, even if they are decent flicks. Mi 2 was the last successful John woo Hollywood movie. I still prefer hard target, face off, mi 2 and his legendary hard boiled, a better tomorrow 1 & 2.
Prior to watching this video, I greatly disliked the narration. Now I feel the soft, nonchalant voice excellently suits the pacing. The footage is strung together so well, you should highly consider making more videos similar to this, though i'm sure there is a lot of difficulty in putting these narratives together. Perhaps a glimpse at Paul Thomas Anderson's films.
I have to accept that the end result to a lot of my videos I owe to serendipity. And a big reason why I like this video so much is that I get to talk about three great movies and it ends on a bit of a downer note when McTiernan goes to prison. And the ending Die Hard montage might be some of the best editing I've ever done. As for PTA it's been awhile since I've watched his movies; I'll probably have to binge watch them again before I do anything on him.
The Hunt for Red October was great, but not consistent. On one side you had great grounded performances, such as Scott Glenn who had a chance to spend some time on an actual nuclear sub and really delivered on showing what those men and their craft is all about. Like these scene here /watch?v=y7g6dKncO-I Then you got almost cartoonish Star-Trek/Disco-Strip Bar like bridge of a soviet sub full of blinking lights and chrome. It's crew wearing WW2 styled dress uniform with all their decorations... /watch?v=zsC2ETsZL0g It's a shame McTiernan didn't find a more subtle way to highlight the difference. It went full "Red Dawn/James Bond" in it's production design choices there and it really is a shame. That dissonance is especially apparent in scenes where Russian officers are shown as believable human beings (like Neil's Montana scene, /watch?v=KuDvxfqgxXA )
For the first comment, yes the music is from the Broken Arrow soundtrack. For the second comment, I think McTiernan was trying to shown that the Soviets finally had a superior piece of technology over the West "like those heady day's of Sputnik and Yury Gagarin", thats why it looks like the bridge of the Star Ship Enterprise. It certainly wasn't historically plausible because at that point the USSR was declining but for this fictional story I think it worked.
yeah I agree that with Red October being the latest and greatest design it was important to show it. Just wish they went with more grounded approach rather than building it like a goddamn Death Star. It felt like am overly dramatic choice compared to everything around american sub which is praised by actual submariners for it's authenticity (along iconic "Das Boot" and more mainstream "Crimson Tide") I'm even cool with Connery's scottish Russian :)
Last Action Hero was great. Underrated movie.
My all time favorite director. Also, something about a Red Dot/video game trailer?
What a great director, such a shame he does not make more great movies.

+Alejandro “jano” Rodriguez Martinez I don't know any Russian film critics off the top of my head.
*With A Vengeance* is a classic.

ahm, no 13th warrior? even in it's current cut it's easily one the best examples of genre.
One of my all time favorite movies, as well as _The Thirteenth Floor._

Good job enjoyed this thanks greetings from dublin ireland

Last Action Hero is a classic. I don't give a fuck what anyone says.
Can you make a video on Tony Scott?
Best action director ever along James Cameron. Die Hard is still the best action flick ever made, in my opinion. No one is able to handle tension or take advantage of confined locations such as John. This is why Die Hard 3 didn´t work that well. Cause it lacked that claustrophobic vibe.

hey that music piece in the beginning - is that from Broken Arrow with Travolta?
+killbop yes

What is the movie is the jet fighter scene from?
It is from The Rock (1996) directed by Michael Bay; his only good movie in my opinion.
he didnt make alien WTF
He was showing clips from other action movies to use examples for the video.
I love you your uploads, keep up the good work.

did you literally phone in the voice-over? ;)
+Reiner Reitsamer Hey I didn't know I was going to make more than a couple of these and all I had on hand was my Skype mic.

what do you think of john woo as an action director
+dornravlin Great in Hong Kong; but unfortunately he became a parody of himself when he moved to Hollywood (I still like Broken Arrow though).
+Sean McDougall what about Face/Off?
+Сергей Мешков When its on I'll watch it, it's so bad its good.
Windtalkers and paycheck weren’t successful movies, even if they are decent flicks. Mi 2 was the last successful John woo Hollywood movie. I still prefer hard target, face off, mi 2 and his legendary hard boiled, a better tomorrow 1 & 2.
Crimson Tide vs The Hunt For Red october
Thats a tough one there both good; but I will go with The Hunt For Red October just because it is more of an adventure story than a thriller.
Das Boot

none theless I think he still got a couple of good ones in him!!
