    Description Source:
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Primal_Rage
    Primal Rage is a versus fighting game developed and released by Atari Games to arcades in 1994. The game takes place in a post-apocalyptic version of Earth called "Urth." Players control one of seven large beasts that battle each other to determine the fate of the planet. Matches feature many of the conventions of fighting games from the era, including special moves and gory finishing maneuvers.
    Various ports were released for home consoles and personal computers. Efforts to perfectly emulate the arcade original have as yet been unsuccessful, due to an unusual copy protection method developers used.
    Toys, comics, a novel (Primal Rage: The Avatars by John Vornholt) and other merchandise tie-ins were also produced. A sequel to the game, Primal Rage II, was close to completion, but never released.
    Gameplay:
    Primal Rage is a traditional two-dimensional fighting game in which two players select characters to battle each other in one-on-one combat, or a single player finishes a campaign of fights against the CPU, over increasing difficulty. The final battle of the single-player game consisted of fighting all the other CPU monsters with an increased power bar, made available in a mini-game prior to the fight. A total of seven characters are available for players to select from (as listed below). Each character has his or her own specialized set of three attack moves and abilities. In the game, the object is to deplete the opposing character's health meter as fast as possible. If "Game Gore" (an option on some consoles) is switched on, then a defeated character's heart will explode into a bloody mess, and their brain will dissolve to ashes.
    While fighting, human tribesmen will wander nearby and worship their gods during battle. This allows for the creatures to toss them around or devour some to regain strength (eating opponents' worshipers will add a bonus to one's score, while eating one's own will penalize the player). Prior to the final battle, a mini game commences in which one is required to eat as many worshipers as possible to increase health for the endurance round. Two human-controlled characters can trigger an easter egg of human volleyball, by keeping worshipers off the ground and batting them back and forth.
    Unlike most fighting games, where the special moves are performed by moving the joystick followed by pressing one or more buttons, Primal Rage features a system where the player holds down certain buttons, then performs the joystick movements. Later revisions of the arcade game added the ability to perform "special moves" in the more traditional way, with motion followed by button presses, but kept the original method as well. After the opponent is defeated, a brief moment is allowed for the player to perform a fatality that finishes the adversary in a more dramatic fashion; these were performed in a similar manner to the special moves. Although all characters feature three finishing moves, some of them were more easter eggs than fatalities, such as Vertigo's "La Vache Qui Rit" (French for "the laughing cow"), a fatality in which Vertigo transforms her opponent into a cow, which moos and runs away.

    This game was FANTASTIC in the arcade! If you hated it, it's because you couldn't comprehend a fighter that wasn't in a 6 button layout! Spent lots of hours on this one!

    • @TheGemini5
      @TheGemini5 6 лет назад +2

      All fighting games got hate. The button layout and different button combinations like 2 or 3 at a time was unprecedented! Mortal Kombat was in another class of it's own and had no big combos like this or SF. It's quite evident you didn't like it...or maybe just sucked at it.

    Ahh the 90's when Arcades still existed and fighting games where king. The more blood the better. In 20 years people will be looking back at the mobas and fps game people play today in much the same way, probably scratching their heads at how people could stand to play games without Virtual Reality, then loading a ps4 emulator to get a good taste of retro

    • @curtiswilson4737
      @curtiswilson4737 2 года назад +1

      The only thing the PlayStation had over it was the vs screen, but the Saturn version was way better. It was faster, all of the sound effects were there, and it loaded faster, where the PlayStation, not saying it was bad, but let's face it, the Saturn was a 2D powerhouse, and the PlayStation was built for 3D polygons and it was proven.

    • @curtiswilson4737
      @curtiswilson4737 2 года назад

      @@msmander87 The Saturn version did the smart thing, and got rid of the vs screen, making it load faster, plus it was built for 2D games like this. Play every 2D fighting game made by Capcom and SNK that both consoles have, and you'll see the substantial difference, where 3D polygons looked better on the PS1 the majority of the time with less slowdown, much easier programming, special effects were easier to program with the push of a button (Saturn had to be programmed in, in which was time consuming and a pain in the rear), gourd shading, and better transparencies, however, with the right developers, certain polygon games, Saturn had a clearer advantage with way more stuff on screen at the cost of a little slowdown, heavier use of parallax scrolling, independent foreground and background scrolling (Dead or Alive, Last Bronx), high resolution mode, and Sega's exclusive ST-V chips.

    Not exactly absurd, they wanted to make it different from every other fighter so for the special moves you had to hold down the action buttons and move the joystick/d-pad, so it's really just the opposite from every other fighter in which you use the movement THEN action buttons.

      @davezanko9051 2 месяца назад

      Which was a big problem for them. The chicken and egg problem of not putting a lot into platforms that haven't sold well. But without the support consumers don't want to buy a platform. The Sega CD wasn't a particular success as it was pricey and games that were on both CD and cart were not seen as much of an upgrade over the base Genesis version, which resulted in meh support. The 32X was a complete waste of time, money, and goodwill from the consumer, which hurt the public's confidence in the company as a whole. That was a big component of the Saturn being a dud in what had been Sega's most important home console markets in the previous generation, North America and Europe. The premature surprise launch didn't help either. They should have cancelled the 32X when they realized the Saturn wasn't as far off as they feared, made the 32X games that were in development into Saturn games, and stuck to the original Saturn launch date so it would have enough games at launch instead of shooting themselves in the foot.

    I personally thought the Atari Jaguar CD and 3DO looked really close, with maybe the PS1 edging them out just slightly. Of course the Arcade and Midway Treasures 2 (arcade version) look the best, but the arcade was built to run the game more or less, and Midway Arcade Treasures was running on consoles two generations removed from when this game was released so they are no big surprise.
    If nothing else, this is a reason to own the 3DO and Atari Jaguar CD. Great video and comparison!!!

    The best platform is dedicated arcade hardware. The dedicated arcade hardware was encrypted. When home ports came out the programmers moved on to better projects or left the industry all together so it was never decrypted. If you play PR in MAME or any home system the characters, when hit would land above the ground or the blood is tan instead of red in some hits (1:11) . That was their way of back in the day finding out who made hacked games of PR. Best way to play is original arcade hardware.

    I'm curious about this 'Tug of War' mode that appears on some versions of the game. Though I doubt it has two of the characters pulling on a rope? I'm assuming it's a bit like the Death Match Mode in World Heroes 2 for the Neo Geo, where both players share the same life bar and whoever manages to fill up the bar with their own colour and decreases their opponents' one to nothing wins. However the bar regenerates whenever a character isn't being attacked, meaning you have to continue attacking until you win and because of the way the bar moves, it's like a game of Tug of War. I just checked an article on IGN and they confirm it. :)

    From what I understand the arcade board itself was designed so that the original source code was protected, making it very hard to port. That and all the Mortal konbat ultra violence crazy and in this game, a victory which includes urinating on the defeated, caused changes as well.
    it has anti air moves and sweeps just like every other game. You just
    see them differently. I think the problem was slow processors and low
    memory meant to make it look 'fast' they skipped frames and ala' stop
    motion animation like Jason and the Argonauts... we have that jumpy
    stuff. if they re scanned the models with all the frames and used the
    processors we have now to speed it up and made real sets... it would
    probably be beautiful.

    well, i understand some people can't grasp the game, it was tough for me back then but only now that i got into fighting games i got so used to the game it's like second nature, i never got into SF MK etc.. cause they didn't have dinosaurs. my guess is, this was the only game to feature a completely different input system for the special moves, people were so into SF MK etc which used similar inputs that they could never get into this.

    I spent many a quarter on this in the arcades... was never good at it, but hey, it was still fun to me. Was certainly different than other fighters at the time which consisted of mostly human or human-like characters. I had the Midway Arcade Treasures on GC, too. Sadly, I no longer own either of them. :(

    I find the MS-DOS version is the best that one which is close to the original Arcade, it's even better with a very good sound card that has awesome MIDI playback like the Gravis Ultrasound or a Roland MT-32.

    Ok the Midway Arcade Treasures version is pretty much a later Arcade version of the game. But that Saturn version looked dope. I think it was exclusively developed for the Saturn. It bigger sprites and character models. Plus the gameplay ran smoother.

    Loved the arcade version of this game. I just couldn't get the controls when it got ported to home systems... it really needed the joystick and big buttons! Plus it was hands-down the best version of this game! The Saturn comes second, but that port (plus the Midway Arcade Treasures version) has that stupid glitch where the blood becomes yellow in some attacks.

    I've been doing some shopping online and I need some opinions. Which port of this game would be better to get? The PS1 port or PS2 port from the midway arcade treasures 2? I want a port that isnt censored in anyway cause I read that some ports got rid of the ability to eat the native people or got rid of blood all together. Also the censoring of the "Golden Shower" fatality

      +Jacob W The only thing about the Midway Arcade Treasures 2 version, is that all though the music and sound effects are retain from the arcade, something is still absent. I know the Music cues are off. When you do they fatalities, the musical cue for the fatalities comes on but the background music stays on causing it to overlap the audio. In The Arcade version, once the musical cues come on the background music stops. That is the only minor issue I have with that but as far as the game play, it's pretty good. The one thing I like and prefer over the one for my Saturn, is the Final Battle. While my Saturn version has all the musical cues in place, it's missing the Combo Names and on the Finale battle, the game stops to load the next opponent, ruining the whole experience and plus the bodies don't decay and shift to the side, they just disappear.

    arcade emulated versions (MAME, basically any arcade rom including the midway treasures release) has buggy/absent special moves, bugged blood (some of it appears photonegative yellow sickly color) and bugged positioning upon character wakeup (sometimes they float in the air)...this still has never been fixed or addressed to this day. There is a romhack that does and they were planning on releasing it but the project was shut down and now the romhack is owned by only a select group of people and you have to basically know the guy who developed it to get a copy. lame

    I love this game when I was a kid. I mean, aside from Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter 2 this was the fighting game I loved. Looking at it now it feels like a rip-off of clay fighter/killer instinct. As strange as that sounds. Nothing like having dinosaurs and apes fight it out.

  • @Soullobscenity

    “Arcade” is really from Midway Arcade Treasures. True arcade has all red blood. MAT could not find any of the original development team to help with the game security regarding the amount of gore. Due to that, any port thereafter can never be true and since, they cannot replicate full red blood which is why some hit emit no blood or tan blood.

    • @TheDeath138
      @TheDeath138 2 года назад

      I know this is an old comment, but I think you're mistaken. The 2.3 version on arcade had the same issue. I do think it was related to the copy protection on the game, but there is a lot of footage of the actual arcade version that shows that issue. Also the MAT version doesn't have characters fall down and float in the air like you see there. I know because I've been playing it recently and haven't seen that happen once, so I'm pretty sure that was fixed in MAT. Then again it is entirely possible that most of the footage is filmed using MAME which could potentially cause the issue too. But I know for sure that the MAT version only has the blood color issue.
