Hate barrow jacks too many different varieties and sizes. The old one was probably 2.1mm pin and the new one 2.4, aliexpres will just sell the same plugs for both sizes. Bit loose on one and a bit tight on the other. Merry Christmas and a happy new year to you all from the wet and cold uk
Ha ha, I hope Rich was in time to notice before giving it back, so he can say "WTF". The new socket will probably the right size now, for the customers power plug. so no tinfoil is needed. haha.
Richard,... When you tried the power adapter and you wiggled it.... And the light became intermittent, it was easy to see that it's either the power jack or possibly a mismatch on the pin size of your power adapter. Those are the 2 things that came to mind, after you removed the circuit board and I saw the back of that Jack and the rivet, I immediately thought more than likely there's a good possibility of the source of the problem and after you gave it a wiggle that confirmed a high probability of an intermittent connection. Now as for the repair... As far as applying solder and getting it to stick as we know that can be problematic, I might have taken a slightly different approach. I would have possibly roughened the surface around the rivet and the tab, applied some flux... But when applying solder, I would've concentrated on the metal tab and the outside of the ring... Getting solder down that center hole could be problematic as we discovered. And that's why simple repairs like this can be an interesting learning lesson, and something to take note of because of what could potentially happen on such a simple repair, and then I think in the end , you kind of laughed at what had happened.... I kind of thought it was funny. Also, because you just think the simplest of repairs. Why do.... Silly things like this happen 🙂 that DC power jack, you installed looks like it is for a 12 V device... We both know there is no standard for the voltage for each Jack and it's dimensions for the adapter... But there is a generality and that looks like a 12V Jack, you may have to dig around a little bit to find a 5 V power adapter with that size of Jack, I hope in the future... A typical customer loses or uses a power adapter that is 12 V. Just because it fits in the connector... Sometimes this happens because of all the power adapters entangled around a device with similar connections, and you know if it fits it must be correct??? Ha ha ha as many people think. Anyways I think you know what I'm getting at. I really enjoyed this video because you demonstrated some of the unexpected things that might occur on such a simple repair. Great lesson to be learned here, could have us all reconsider the ramifications that might occur on a simple repair.... And I think that's the point of this video
Those stupid barrel connectors… I have fixed so many of them over the years, and somehow that centre-pin is never the diameter of the ones you have in stock. i hate them with a passion.
It's an aluminum foil try to remove it with tweezers and even if solder flows in it won't make that shape since the surrounding area is all plastic
Great repair

Ha... that''s not solder inside the connector. It's tinfoil! User attempt at a fix
yes you can see it's been in there from the start
Remember the user is a common fault

I came here go say the same thing.
@ 8:22 Yes, I can see that it's lighting up.... although it's a bit hard to tell through all of that finger hair!!
