Smart trainer was a game changer for me, it took Zwift from something I did whilst spinning on the bike to something that drives my indoor bike sessions. A training matt for under the bike has been brilliant too, after a big session there are puddles on the floor, just towel and anti-bac the matt down and it's all good, rather than soaking into the flooring.
I started with a "dumb" trainer & speed sensor but my watts never went above 60. It was so frustrating. The people running were passing me! I found a used Kicker Snap trainer and bought a setup for a dedicated trainer wheel. Now I love Zwift. A smart trainer makes a huge difference.
So glad you're loving it Deina. I run a women's social ride first Tuesday of every month at 5pm UK time if you ever want some company. It's chatting pace and it's a great group of women who ride. Would be great to see you there some time :)
Deina I feel your pain, I had the same issue the bloody thing was dripping with sensors and none connected consistently, yep plenty runs went passed me despite peddling like a steam engine. 🙂
It’s less about what you need and more about what you want. My setup is a 4mth old Kick5, rocker plate, 55in 4K Tv, Apple 4K Tv, Colnago EPS with SRAM Red and four Vornado fans ….might seem a bit excessive to some but I did almost 10,000km on it last year (ie 7-10hrs a week on it and racing ZRL etc)
Absolutely non my friend. You have a set up that I can only dream of. Just assuming you earn lots and have no children to absorb your money that you spend on top line bike equipment. No offence intended. Top line bike gear is sometimes referred to as “dentistry” as only dentists can afford it!
@@tomandsamuel ok sure thanks for clarifying. No I am not a dentist and I have two young sports crazy children and I spend alot of time coaching their teams. From a time perspective I do about 11 to 13hrs a week total as I also ride and race IRL. That's 6 days a week minimum and I get up at 4:30am to do it or ride at night ie Zwift ZRL racing is 7:30pm. The setup isn't that bad...the bike is actually a 10yr old bike that I've owned since new and hard to put a value on..., the Kickr5 at $1500 I bought when Wahoo had a sale..the rocker plate was $450 and the TV I bought on sale for $400. Fans weren't cheap...at @120 each. These are all AUD prices. So if you do your homework you can save money on the setup.
The most important thing on Zwift is music that motivates…. I don’t know how many times I thought I was about to give up in a trainer session and a good tune came on and everything just got better!! Another a fan is something you should have especially if indoors and one that has good power. Had a giggle that you are watching another legendary RUclipsr GP Lama.. both your’s and his are on my top lists of channels I watch 😁.
Thanks so much Sharon! Yeahhh music is what it’s ALL about too - esp for races. Got my race playlist all set up and ready to go! Brianstorm, Arctic Monkeys top of it!
I wanted a break from sweating indoors and riding through mud outdoors and rode 2 hours on the cycle circuit in Hillingdon last weekend. Good entertainment, nice feeling of speed on clean, dry tarmac and I was able to ride the summer bike and plush cotton wall tyres. Recommend!
A headband! Otherwise for me it’s a constant stream of sweat in my eyes even with my fan. Maybe with the Wahoo fan going full on like a hair dryer I wouldn’t need it.
I love the big screen. I have been using my phone and feel I'm looking down all the time and my neck dose get sore. You are such an inspiration thank you for sharing 🙂 .
Thanks Katie! I finally picked up a smart trainer after years of dumb training! I purchased a Elite Directo XR as it was $200 off and came with a compatible cassette. Absolutely life changing! My setup is an old TV with the basic Roku model and screen mirroring from iphone. I really like this setup.
Thanks Katie love the set up! I have the Wahoo KickR system and have had this since November. I am really not that fit but I feel I am getting better. This was really useful.
Oh the Wahoo Kickr Headwind is well worth it if you can afford it. I am sure there are just as good options out there but if you were on the fence I recommend it.
I have a tiny handlebar mounted bag I use only indoors since there's no aero penalty. I just keep my bits and pieces like headphones and remotes in it so i don't have to get off the bike and they are always handy.
I think was is important is if you can set the screen to a elevation that sees you looking ahead instead of down. Of course it's personal but for outdoor cyclists it's more normal and biomechanically beneficial. I have a tendency to look too much at my gears when riding, which is an old habit I'm getting away from and a head height screen on the turbo has me focusing ahead.
Dad needs some clip in shoes and pedals, makes a heap of difference, and they are pretty cheap from Decathlon to get him started. My son actually bought me a Headwind fan for Christmas / Birthday etc. and it is seriously good - before I was a puddle of sweat - now, sometimes I don't even use my towel. Outrageously expensive, but highly effective. I don't think I would have ever forked out that much on myself - but I was lucky to have a very generous kid!
Hi Katie, I have a Kickr Snap, an Ipad and my iphone (comp app) with an old office fan. I pretty much ride every day on it and love it! Would love to upgrade to a Core and maybe a bigger screen, but I still love it! I'll keep the fan becuase it's pretty quiet and breezy. : )
I’m using an iPad that is perched on a little table next to the front wheel that’s just about at the height of the handle bars. I also have my iPhone with the companion App right next to it. I don’t have to tilt my head up to see the display and I can reach the phone with my right hand to interact with the App. Also … pedestal fan with remote. Riding my Giant Defy Advanced Pro 3 on an Elite Suito … my second winter with this setup … works great!
A smart trainer, water bottle cages,, someplace to access food from & a fan or 2 off course... I like one from ahead n one from below... Thanks Katie for information 👍
Like you I don't have a garage/shed so all my riding is indoors. The worst mistake I made was trying to use a cheap yoga mat to prevent sweating on the floor and reduce noise. It used to slip across the floor, and once when I had a wheel on trainer got caught up in the roller. I eventually decided to fork out on a more expensive dedicated one from Tacx, it's now a couple of years old and is so much better. I would never go back.
Maybe something for your dad: Being from a generation where some pictures I took were on slide film, I still happened to own a "slide projector table". I had not used that in over a decade, but now it is my dedicated macbook stand, so if your dad still has one, will beat the plastic crate in comfort
I have a kickr5 connected to a very OTT gaming PC, this has a RTX3090 which has two monitors permanently connected to it, and Zwift is displayed on a old TV which is on the opposite side of my conservatory. I also have the companion app running on my phone, and iPad is used for music/you tubes etc. I obviously didn’t buy a 2k graphics card for Zwift - I use it mostly for solitaire 🤪
I have bought a Wahoo kikr core, but i was realy disapointed. Now i drive a Tacx Neo 2 T and it so so much better and much more smooth and realistic. For my TV I User an Apple TV with Zwift, no Smartphone nessecary. Sorry for my bad english. ☺️
for the fan, you can get a painting fan, mine was $149 and it three times as powerful as the wahoo headwind unit. Plug it into a bluetooth outlet and its controllable via phone
Nice set up Katie! I bought a used Elite Direto smart trainer back in October & am now up to level 16 on Zwift. Like you, I use my best road bike & have a 'Media display table' by KOM cycling set up in front of the bike & on that I have my tablet that's linked to Zwift plus my phone on the companion app, said table also has two inset bottle holders which is handy! I have a £15 fan from B&Q which does it's job well enough. I'm currently on the last week of a 4 week Zwift training plan, going to do a 30min session shortly! keep up with your great content!
Using Shame as your RUclips with him doing a Zwift Monthly Update announcement. Brilliant. I'm not currently using Zwift but I have an old barstool for my computer, which is a Macbook Pro. I bought from Amazon a Lasko 22" all metal fan. I have yet to put it on max as the lowest setting blows my hair around!
Great setup katie ..I have the full wahoo setup ..kickr core trainer the fan and the climb ..I have my old winter bike on it a merdia ..and a 42 inch screen...we have an old mobile out the back and I converted it into my pain cave love it ...so uts setup all year around ...
I agree completely about needing a fan, but I think the Headwind is too pricey unless you really want the breeze to feel like you're actually riding. I don't, since I generally need max airflow, which is why I have 3 decent fans: 1 from the front right blowing at my torso and legs, one to the front left blowing at my face, and one behind blowing up my back. Having the surrounding air flow really helps a lot vs one fan head on, no matter how powerful. Your dad doesn't need a fan if he can Zwift with long sleeves and pants! He's crazy! :)
I am doing Zwift using a Velocore spin bike because it connects to Zwift through my iPad. I am doing the back to fitness program and it kicked my butt tonight. I do Peloton workouts on my off days and they seem so easy next to Zwift.
I started with a Kinetic Road Machine (wheel on trainer) and when I got using .Zwift regularly, invested in a Saris H3 (direct drive). The quad lock looks nice. I am using a sweat guard with built in pocket for my phone. Keeps it accessible, but can’t rotate to landscape.
I love my quadlock also. I just upgraded from dumb trainer to the wahoo kickr roller and I'm waiting on my garmin rally pedals. I like the easy bike on/off feature. Still using a cheap fan and may look into that fan in the future.
I got the Quad Lock also and love it. Got their Poncho option to keep the sweat off the phone. I think the Poncho cover is $10. And I just started back riding after 20 years off. So I am OLDER lol. But really like the Wahoo SYSTM program and also have a Wahoo Kickr. Great combination. 👍
A bit of a misnomer, but the VacMaster Cardio fan does a great job and has a three speed remote control. Not quite as sexy as the Wahoo fan but only half the price and has similar "blowing a gale" characteristics. They also do a slightly cheaper one without the remote control.
Great videos Katie!! My wife is getting into cycling and has set a target of doing the C2C in a day this summer..she’s started the Back To Fitness plan on Zwift and is nervous of joining groups and being dropped..I’ll see if she’ll join your women only group..just upgraded from the kickr to the kickr bike..awesome bit of kit if you haven’t tested one yet..gonna get the quad lock as I’m sick of reaching across for my phone on the window ledge
David tell your wife I said hello :) and that she would be most welcome on the group ride. First Tuesday of the month 5pm UK time!! And yeah I was the same, I balanced it on the sofa and then I never used power ups haha!
Screwfix 3 speed industrial fan, TPLink Tapo Smart Plug & your away! No need for mega expensive fans! Turn it on & off from your phone. You can also get a Garmin or Wahoo mount for your phone & use that instead of a QuadLock, it’s not as versatile (granted, the QuadLock is very good), but the Garmin/Wahoo option works just as-well.
Great vids Katie - I can defo vouch for the quadlock. I have mounts on my road and gravel bikes. Had a big crash on the road almost two weeks ago and the mount kept my iPhone solid in position. Even off road it is brilliant. Shame it didn't save my poor rotator cuff tho! 😫
I have a computer running Zwift (and the companion app with a quad lock). I also have a monitor so I can watch RUclips videos like yours. Worth noting I almost always ride a training session, and maybe would pay more attention to the Zwift screen if I was doing a group ride or race.
I really need a fan, but apart from that... a tablet or laptop (might try an apple TV). Something to put it on (barstool). Something to put my phone on (I use my aero bars)
I'm thinking of getting a smart trainer (likely the Kickr Snap as it would just be for winter and the occasional inclement weather indoor right during warmer months) and using Zwift. Since I'd likely mostly use it in winter, is it possible to suspend your subscription for those 8-9 months when you don't use it much, doing "dumb" rides for those occasional warmer season indoor rides, without losing your data or account for when you resume it the following winter?
That fan looks epic! Used to use a turbo trainer but then replaced with a spin bike - much easier for the both of us to use, less mess..when that broke I changed to a tacx smart bike- amazing bit of kit, comes with tablet holder phone tray, in built (small) fans. Utterly addicted to Rouvy at the moment.
Are you sponsored by Wahoo? I have the Kickr - I didn’t have the phone on the bars as I would sweat all over it. I have a table in front of my bike with fans, iPad, drink, phone, speaker, etc. I also have my iPad connected to my TV via an HDMI cable. I have a towel over the handlebars to soak up the sweat!
That sounds a cracking set up! You can get a cover for the phone to stop water / sweat on it. Also someone mentioned a sweat band… which I might give a go. 80s look incoming!!! And nope not sponsored by Wahoo.
I have an over specced pain cave. I have no need for the high def capable PC, large 4K screen and wahoo Kickr headwind and dedicated smart trainer (Stages SB20) but hey why not 🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@KatieKookaburra Agreed,a luxury item. However it enables multi tasking…the extra laptop allows me to combine language classes and professional education whilst Zwifting.
Have you seen the new ammendments to the Highway Code, especially as regards our tribe. Riders can ride 2 abreast in the middle of the road etc 👀🙈 Can only see a few "problems" down the road, if common sense doesn't prevail. Stay safe Katie ☀️🦔
Top tip...pain cave ESSENTIAL..get head band and wrist bands. Stops sweat getting in your eyes and all over your bike. Only a small cost but can save you a fortune on sweat damaged bike components.
I'm supported by them now, yes. But go back and watch my videos from 3,4,5 years ago when I did as much Zwift stuff even when I wasn't supported. I love Zwift whether supported or not. And I would NEVER work with brands I don't believe in and genuinely love. If you only knew of the cash from brands I turn down regularly because I don't believe in them like I do Zwift, Ribble, etc. I totally get where you're coming from, some folk pushing every product under the sun but I won't ever do that and respect you lot, my audience, than to ever promote something I don't absolutely 100% love!
@@KatieKookaburra am riding with Dave noakes tonight at 7pm.. can’t wait to do the alps.. 👍🏻thanks again Katie.. ur videos will be shared.. i got 4k plus friends on fb :)
@@KatieKookaburra I use a city bike with internal gear hub on a Tacx Satori Wheel-on trainer with a Vittoria Trainer tire. It's a very rare setup but Tacx still supports it. I got the bike and the trainer pretty cheaply (100+30€) and so far Zwift makes really a lot of fun. I'll try rubber mats designed for washing machines and see if that solves the problem.
@@KatieKookaburra 👋👍 I just discovered your channel. I’ll be sure to watch some more videos and give you some more likes. thanks for sharing your knowledge! 🙏
I don't know. Bikes to me are about freedom and riding outside, exploring. Zwift defeats that whole purpose to me. If you're a racer, or the weather is especially bad, maybe it's useful, but it's not for me.
I thought the exact same - then I came off on ice in winter and vowed I would never risk it again. Then it was just winter riding and now I love the races and being able to train so consistently has got me fitter than ever!! I absolutely love it but understand it’s not for everyone. For me it means I can enjoy the outdoor rides more as I’m fitter to be able to go further for longer :)
Bit of a let down. Says ULTIMATE Zwift Pain Cave and I'm expecting something over the top but it's just a pretty normal setup. Honest tile would have said My Zwift setup. Anyways, have fun riding, best of luck.

Nice to see the minimalist option to get you started,. how noisy is the fan?
It’s not too bad at all - once it’s on I don’t really notice it :) esp with music on! 😎
@@KatieKookaburra okay thanks
Are you sponsored by Wahoo? I have the Kickr - I didn’t have the phone on the bars as I would sweat all over it. I have a table in front of my bike with fans, iPad, drink, phone, speaker, etc. I also have my iPad connected to my TV via an HDMI cable. I have a towel over the handlebars to soak up the sweat!
That sounds a cracking set up! You can get a cover for the phone to stop water / sweat on it. Also someone mentioned a sweat band… which I might give a go. 80s look incoming!!! And nope not sponsored by Wahoo.
I use a sweatband but it gets waterlogged!
my setup is more like your dad's but hoping to build this year more like yours (minus the fan hahaha)
I use an iPad mounted above the bars, and mirror the video to a 4k monitor for recording.
I have an over specced pain cave. I have no need for the high def capable PC, large 4K screen and wahoo Kickr headwind and dedicated smart trainer (Stages SB20) but hey why not 🤣🤣🤣🤣
What is the difference between a turbo and a smart trainer?
oh your dads got some real bikes in there too, nice
Helllo ,
Nice video ! Which pc Modell ist this ???
Just wondering what you use to stop the sweat dripping onto your headset and locking it up?
I have that fan, and a towel :)
How are you managing sweat since you’re using your primary bike?
I have a fab straight at my face so it tends to dry the sweat pretty quickly and use a towel all the time :)
Great video. How do you rate Ribble? I currently have a cheap budget bike. 2 years down the line and I am looking for something a bit better.
LOVE them!!!!!
Why did you switch from the wahoo kicker to the Tacx neo T2?
Kickr desk or similar with 2 laptops. Fans+++…can never have enough airflow.
The prices for the Kickr desks just seemed too pricey for just being a stand.
@@KatieKookaburra
Agreed,a luxury item.
However it enables multi tasking…the extra laptop allows me to combine language classes and professional education whilst Zwifting.
I bought trainer & signed up for a free 30 day Zwift trial yesterday !
Woohoooooooo!!!! You will love it! Enjoy Richard.
Hi Katie can you please give the name of your ear phones, you named them in a previous video. Thanks 🙏
Yeah Aeropex Aftershokz :)
@@KatieKookaburra very many thanks 🙏
Thanks for an informative video! What's the tripod you use for the screen?
I'm not sure of the exact model but it's one like this...www.amazon.co.uk/Studio-Monitor-Speaker-Stand-Mount-Black/dp/B076X9C7H1
Have you seen the new ammendments to the Highway Code, especially as regards our tribe. Riders can ride 2 abreast in the middle of the road etc 👀🙈
Can only see a few "problems" down the road, if common sense doesn't prevail.
Stay safe Katie ☀️🦔
Yeah seen that.. and think if we were all more tolerant of each other we wouldn't need 'rules' about this kind of thing.
Maybe a music stand, to put on the laptop, would be a great gift for your father... 🎼
Great idea!!
❤️💪👍 nice pain cave. Mine is way more low tec that that.
Top tip...pain cave ESSENTIAL..get head band and wrist bands. Stops sweat getting in your eyes and all over your bike. Only a small cost but can save you a fortune on sweat damaged bike components.
Cheers Neil, grand tip that! :)
Get a SAD lamp for even more realism
That fan likely has a peltier cooling unit built into it, which will give you the colder air. But what happen to "this laptop is all I need?"...lol!!!
Laptop will do it but this video is ULTIMATE pain cave
@@KatieKookaburra I saw you and that was something you said. I was like yeah just wait she is going to get a 70 inch monitor...lol
Is it worth getting zwift if you've only got a dumb trainer ?
Yeah for sure!
There’s a free trial on Zwift for 7 days and you get around 20km free per month :)
I’ve done the 7 day free and really enjoyed it but didn’t really know if it would be worth paying £13 a month with only in dumb trainer
Hi Katie you must like swift it must be good take care
Sponsored!
Hi Katie l understand that's your job
Surprised you use Zotac pc and not Apple TV reasons ?
I needed the capability to live stream.
Hi Katie whitch pc was it your using plz
It's the Zotac
What’s is the length your arm crank 165 .?
Yuppp
Subtle reference to gp lama 😉
He's a beast.
Katie can i join ur meetup ride.. thanks.. am new to zwift..
Yeah course!! It’s on Zwift. First Tuesday of the month, 5pm and 7pm UK time 😎😎
@@KatieKookaburra am riding with Dave noakes tonight at 7pm.. can’t wait to do the alps.. 👍🏻thanks again Katie.. ur videos will be shared.. i got 4k plus friends on fb :)
Thanks bud :)
Also… choosing Dave over me and the Alp… I’m offended 🤣
Just got a call from our janitor that my zwift setup is too noisy. 🙂
NOOOOO!! What set up do you have? Wheel on turbos are a lot noisier. Try a direct drive?
@@KatieKookaburra I use a city bike with internal gear hub on a Tacx Satori Wheel-on trainer with a Vittoria Trainer tire. It's a very rare setup but Tacx still supports it. I got the bike and the trainer pretty cheaply (100+30€) and so far Zwift makes really a lot of fun. I'll try rubber mats designed for washing machines and see if that solves the problem.
I Love you❤
Cheers, bud.
I tried watching this, but I can’t really see the setups well because your constantly cutting the screen or zooming in too tight.
Sorry!! You’re right I will do it better if I make a similar vid. Thanks for the feedback :)
@@KatieKookaburra 👋👍 I just discovered your channel. I’ll be sure to watch some more videos and give you some more likes. thanks for sharing your knowledge! 🙏
Is your dad a biker ? That looks like an SV650 behind him.
Yes I saw that, was an sv650 s with the clip ons , great colour!
He is, but I have no idea what the bikes are 🙃
I don't know.
This is MY ultimate Zwift set up though :)
L1 good job
Shout out to gplama shane miller 🙊
Lama patrol.
why is literally EVERY comment a full paragraph
You have bucked the trend 😛
😂
Zwift is tragically trying to be relevant
